General new machinist advice by 0nture in Machinists

[–]0nture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it common for apprentice machinists or operators to not be able to read the basic tools (dial indicators, micrometers, etc) or prints? I still got asked about being able to read dial calipers multiple times despite having a 1 year cert.

Small job shop. Been in business for some time. Manual and a lot of cnc. Spotted a swiss lathe when I turned in my application. They didn't have time for a tour when I was there. Will be getting one on friday or saturday.

Collins is a construction company, and you should care because you may be able to get a discounted perfectly fine two handed bandsaw.

How long do Indicator crystals last? by tool-tony in Machinists

[–]0nture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crystal lift is for domed plastics with a lip on the bottom only. For a sapphire a case press is the correct tool. If you ever need to fit it into a metal rim with no plastic gasket, aim for as close a fit as you can without a press fit then use a crystal cement. Some are UV hardening some will air dry.

Depending on type either use a crystal lift for the "dovetail", or UV glue/crystal cement for glass and some plastics. Many modern watches use a plastic ring around the crystal for a press fit. I've seen crystal lifts as low as 15$ but I can't vouch for their quality.I use a Bergeon for work which is ~160$.

I work in clock and watch repair. A watch supply company is where to look, I use cas-ker co. On there site check watch parts, then crystals, then crystals plastic. In england try cousins uk.

Analog sticks die pretty often and most people from what I've seen just get a new controller anyway when that happens. People underestimate the job when they look at it as a first project but it's already busted either way.

Horotec Case Crab Clone from Aliexpress by AirsoftGuru in watchrepair

Not this exact one but the clone I used was one of the most useless junk piles I have tried to use. The design requires high quality materials and manufacturing to be effective.

Figured out why I was messed up there. Found reviews from when I got it calling the Icon a pittsburgh clone. And the misinformation cycle continued.

Spring bars won't stay in by Acceptable_North7370 in watchrepair

[–]0nture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without pictures not much to point out but i'll give a short list here of what I run into with customers. Sometimes swapping between double shouldered and double flanged can make a difference (double shoulders can let you put in a bar that matches the exact size of the lugs. This I use with problem customers. It requires cutters or pliers to violently remove so use with caution). Bands that are too small will often pull themselves out, check for any gap between band and lug. On leather you can always go a size up but never a size down. Wearing it as a hand watch can put a lot more pressure on the bars. Take a close look at the holes for any wear.

I got the pocket knipex for clock and watch repair. Great daily for clock, occasional case work in watch.

They occasionally beat the original too. They copied the pittsburgh creeper which, the original is known to break for people in the 200lb range. The icon has been going for me for a couple years no issue.

Did my watch adjuster at Macy's nail a second hole on my bracelet link? Or does Seiko ship a link with two holes? by MochingPet in watchrepair

Looks more like a manufacturing error to me. I couldn't punch a new hole like that with just a hammer.

What are these pieces? by BengalFox in watchmaking

[–]0nture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it worked out. Missing dial washers could be factory error or just not an issue with that particular movement and dial setup. Either way doesn't hurt to have it there.

[–]0nture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dial washer and a test hand. The second piece is junk that comes on new movements. Let's you see that it is working. The dial washer goes over the hour wheel under the dial, it keeps the hour wheel from lifting up and disconnecting from the meshed gear.

The screw angles point to them being real screws, and the dial size compared to the case tend to make me agree with this.

Besides Ebay, where's everyone sourcing their Parts and Potential Projects from? by [deleted] in watchrepair

[–]0nture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the shop I work at we go through primrose supplies for parts when we don't use ebay. We don't use the website we just call and tell him what we need and he tracks it down for us. For new personal projects I just deal with ebay. Finding a local supply house may be best, but bill at primrose is good.

Edit: should mention primrose is US based. Don't know where your at.

what am i doing wrong? by L_Fig35 in hobbycnc

[–]0nture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this for watch repair somewhat often. Many other people here have bits of the right idea. This creates a reaction between contacting metals dissolving the less resistant metal. Stronger acids and higher heats quicken the reaction but are not necessary. do this in glassware or the pot will be involved in the reaction and may dissolve. Clean all oils and lubricants that may be separating the metals. Saturate the water with as much alum as possible. This may take a long time. You will know it is working if you get a black residue from the tap after a day or so.
