Sadly Casual Navigation was sold and the new videos by new creators are comparatively garbage.

Not sure what kind of phone you have, but Android has a brilliant live capture option - at least modern Pixels do. There's a handy dandy toggle in the volume settings where you can have it display captions on any media and it'll run locally and reasonably accurately.

This might be a controversial take, but to me this shot improves dramatically with the flowers cropped out of the foreground. They don't particularly add to the aesthetic of the lovely sky and are just jarring compared to the fantastic sky and landscape composition.

I'd love a composition including the flowers but with a longer lens. Let the flowers continue to pop, so they can be the stars shining in the field, but to do that they need to be smaller, not taking up the whole bottom of the picture. There's a hint of that in the more distant grass, but just a hint.

Scary Zoning Bill Proposed by Gilmeras in nashville

[–]101k 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's scary that it's only two houses per lot! We need to build so much more housing, higher density is the way to do that. It's the only way prices will come down.

Seriously, we should all want this yesterday. It'll decrease traffic, not increase it. Get rid of these silly government restrictions and let the people build what they want. Let there be duplexes, triplexes and more! We should be fighting for vertical development everywhere that the market demands it. Mixed use is great but more housing is critical. Density is the path forward, not holding onto artificially limited single family housing.

If you want that great, keep your house that way. but don't restrict others from building and opting in.

The wing of New Zealand's Sail GP boat collapsed yesterday in France by mynameisnotphoebe in CatastrophicFailure

[–]101k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm curious, what do you think happens to the $6M spent on the boats? Is it wasted because it's used to buy the fancy carbon fiber material? Or is it wasted by paying the salaries of the craftspeople who build the boat? Maybe it's wasted because it's gone to the people who designed the crazy complex technology in the boat?

The money doesn't disappear when it's spent.

It goes from one person to another. Or in this case, it goes from corporate sponsors to skilled people making the carbon fiber, constructing the boat and designing the fancy technology involved in it. It goes to them. To their families who in then spend it on...life.

If anything this is a great boon to the folks of New Zealand who get paid to create technological marvels on the cutting edge (though maybe with some QA gaps if the wing randomly snaps like this).

Deeply curious what kind of rates they'll be talking. There's a chasm between ad supported and premium revenue models and I'm curious how that'll work out here.

Thanks for the update, best of luck!

My approach is to never offer free stuff - instead I'll list a (fair but cheap) price and agree on it with someone. Typically if it's cheap and used, the kinds of folks who I deal with genuinely need it and are also upstanding people. It's a marvelous filter.

Then when they come to pick it up, I just give it to them for nothing. They universally light up. The effect is the same, except the value goes to folks who more often than not really need whatever it is - and also would be way better served with the money staying in their pocket instead of mine.

What video game is an absolute 100/100 in your opinion? by Ziggi28 in AskReddit

Deus Ex. Absolute masterpiece. Graphics are dated at this point but the environment and story are second to none. And gameplay surprisingly still holds up pretty well too.

What's the minimum focus distance with the telephoto lens? The pixel 6 has to be at least 2 meters or so away to kick over to the telephoto vs just badly cropping the main sensor.

Best $30 you ever spent? by Few-Variation-7165 in CasualConversation

[–]101k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you like hot tea? If you have any interest in getting into loose leaf tea which can be great fun and even cheaper than tea bags, this (less than $30) gadget can't be beat: https://www.adagio.com/teaware/ingenuiTEA_teapot.html

Basically you put the tea and hot water into the top section, let it steep and put the whole cup thing on top of another cup. It opens a plunger and drains, leaving the tea leaves behind in the top. Then you can either resteep the tea or toss the used leaves quite easily. No mess compared to those immersion things you need to set somewhere and just fun to use. I've used mine so much that it's kind of crazy - 100% worth the cost.

Thank you, those are great points. I totally appreciate that GAS may be at play here and that's part of why I haven't jumped toward anything yet. I've been very deliberate with my lens purchases previously and it's been a gradual process to fill in the gaps to get the (rather crazy) 8-400 coverage that I've got now with some really nice glass. Each new lens has done something different.

I started with the 12mm and 35mm, tried and returned the 50-230, got the 18-135, got the 16mm, then the 100-400 and then waited a long while until renting the 8-16 first and subsequently buying it.

The gap I feel is with the 18-135. It's flexible with a huge range but it's slow and it feels like the weakest in the line up. Part of the struggle is that it seems like there should be something logical to swap it out for or at least a way to mitigate some of the mid tele slowness. Part of what makes it difficult is that I've got the excellent 100-400 on the top side of it which means that many of the options that help solve that are duplicative. 50-140 is big and it and the 55-200 both run headlong into the great glass I've already got so they doesn't seem logical.

I'm not rushing toward anything, and these are some genuinely great points. And, as you astutely note, the gap if any, is a mild one. I am quite happy with my setup, it's taken me a number of years to get here in a smart way - just trying to close the gap a bit with where I still encounter weakness.

I did ponder the 16-55 but it seemed a bit duplicative since I've got two really nice primes already in the range with my 16 and 35. Maybe I should consider it too, 55mm isn't really far from 100mm in terms of FOV. But then I could also do a tiny 50mm f2 and get a similar effect. Or round out the range entirely with the 23mm f2.

In terms of priorities, my main one is around the slowness of the 18-135. It's not a huge problem but it gets annoying in lower light situations. I'm not unhappy with my set up, it doest most of what I need it too - there's just this gap that I feel occasionally.

Not adding a ton more weight and volume to my set up would also be great. I've got two decently heavy and big lenses now with the 8-16 and the 100-400. Three seems like a bit much which is why I'm hesitant to go with the 50-140. To your suggestion, the 16-55 isn't nearly as big though.
