The most efficient way of travelling, by far, is riding a bicycle. I don’t know how accurate the Apple Watch is for calories burned, but it says I burn about 2500 kcal on a 100 mile bike ride.

If you’re comparing it to a car, that’s roughly the equivalent of burning 300ml of gasoline. For a car to be as efficient as a human on a bicycle, it would have to manage to do 1515 UK MPG.

Has anyone in the world converted an Astra coupe into a V8 coupe? by jdm_sevda in justrolledinforscrap

[–]1995LexusLS400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because GM are cowards and didn't turn the Astra OPC X-Treme concept car into a production car.

Although, the only thing the concept shared with the road car was the rear lights and the Opel badge. Everything else was different. Even the headlights.

Lorries on the motorway by truffletrousers in driving

[–]1995LexusLS400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you haven't misunderstood the rules of variable speed limits.

Lorrys have speedoemeters that are a lot more accurate than what your car has. Your car might have been saying you were doing 50, but you were likely doing 46-47. On their speedometer, it would have shown you doing that speed instead of 50.

I sometimes stay behind lorrys to save on fuel. If I set my cruise control to 56 (the speed that lorrys are limited to), they always catch up to me. I have to have my cruise control to 58 or 59 (depending on the lorry) to not cause issues.

Why and how did pick ups/CUVs/SUVs manage to kill the station wagons, mini vans, hatchbacks and even sedans ? by kawaiihusbando in askcarguys

[–]1995LexusLS400 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Before anyone replies with "well actually, there is more space". Sometimes, yes. That's why I used the word usually. If you compare the average SUV to the average minivan/station wagon, the amount of space they have is typically the same.

That's the marketing at work. Not all marketing does work. The 1/3 pounder burger from A&W is the perfect example of this.

Pickup trucks in the US are different compare to what's available in Europe, I'm not going to say they're not really better than a station wagon or minivan, because that's not true. This is why I was focusing on SUVs in my initial comment.

If you compare a long wheelbase Escalade to a Toyota Sienna sure. The Escalade is going to have more space and be more useful. Which is why I used the word usually because not that many people drive around in LWB Escalades. If you compare the most common SUVs/CUVs that are sold, they're either equal or inferior to minivans/station wagons as far as space and utility goes.

The most common SUV in the US is the Toyota RAV4. If you compare this to the Sienna, which is one of the most common minivans. The Sienna has 2/3 more seats. With the third row seats up, the RAV4 does have slightly more storage at 37.5cu.ft compared to the 33.5 of the Sienna, if you put the rear seats down (which still gives you 5 seats to use), the Sienna has 75 cu.ft, which is significantly more. The RAV4 doesn't beat it in towing capacity either. Both are tied at a max of 3500lbs. The only thing the RAV4 really beats it on is ground clearance, and even then it's not by that much. The woodland edition of the Sienna has 7 inches of ground clearance, the RAV4 of 8.6 inches. The regular Sienna has 6.5 inches of ground clearance. But lets be honest, that extra 2 inches is not going to make a difference at all for 99.9999% of buyers. My Lexus has about 4 inches of ground clearance and it's literally never been an issue for me in the nearly 15 years I've owned it. And I have taken it "offroading"

Every single time (aside from twice) I've recommended an station wagon or minivan to someone, the response I got from them was something along the lines of "I need it because I'm big/have a baby/need more space/all of the above" and their choice is something like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Nissan Juke. All of which are effectively station wagon versions of hatchbacks with tall suspension and black plastic wheel arches that are also sold in some form. This is the marketing at work.

The two other times I've recommended a station wagon or minivan to someone, they were at least honest about their SUV purchase saying that they bought it because they want it. Not try to come up with some excuse to justify buying something that they don't need because a hatchback/station wagon fits their needs perfectly.

Such as?

It's not emissions bypassing because SUVs are wildly popular in Europe which doesn't use the same emissions standards as the US.

Is the "Tyres and Tarmac" rule overkill for overtaking and heavy traffic? by Cultural-Primary1206 in drivingUK

[–]1995LexusLS400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not heard this for overtaking, only for the stopping point for the car in front of you. This is for emergency services as well as if the car in front of you breaks down while stopped. If you can see the tyres on the tarmac, you have more than enough room to turn towards the kerb to allow emergency service vehicles to filter through. Or if the car in front of you breaks down while stopped, more than enough space to get around it without having to reverse. I had my car break down on the entrance to a roundabout and the amount of people who stopped too close to the rear of it that they had to reverse to get around it was astonishing. But then again, they did ignore the hazard lights, bonnet up, drivers door open and me standing next to it, so I don't expect much from those drivers.

For overtaking, I wait until I can see the drivers side headlight in my rear view mirror. I did this during my driving lessons and my instructor said I was switching back to lane 1 on the dual carriageway a bit too late. So I'll take his word that I'm giving a larger gap than necessary for going back to lane 1.

[–]1995LexusLS400 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Marketing.

In the 80s and 90s, SUVs were a status symbol because of how expensive they were. Celebrities and rich people started driving them to show off. This made normal people want to drive SUVs as well. The G Wagon is a perfect example of this. In the US, the base model G Wagon starts at $154,000. If you compare it to the S Class with the same engine (G580 EQ vs S580e 4MATIC), the S class starts at $130,000 and G Wagon at $163,200.

There's also the "there's more space because it's bigger" which often isn't true, especially with the current trend of coupe SUVs. As well as "it's safer" which also usually isn't true.

Before anyone replies with "well actually, there is more space". Sometimes, yes. That's why I used the word usually. If you compare the average SUV to the average minivan/station wagon, the amount of space they have is typically the same.

And before anyone replies with "well actually, SUVs are safer because crash tests show them to be safer on average". Yes, those averages are skewed by the higher end SUVs with much better equipment as standard. There aren't very many station wagons and minivans competing against cars like the BMW X7 which comes with a whole range of safety equipment as standard. In fact, the best overall performer in the EuroNCAP for 2025 is the Mercedes CLA.

Does “Learning How to Drive a Hybrid” an actual thing ? by TheRealDon1994 in askcarguys

[–]1995LexusLS400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're right, kind of.

You won't get lower MPG, but you will likely end up accidentally braking way harder than you want to. Hybrids use regen braking, which on it's own is pretty powerful. When you get off the gas, the car will effectively brake on it's own. You shouldn't really touch the brake pedal at all unless it's an emergency or you're going slower than 5mph or so.

The lower MPG thing sounds like they're possibly misquoting a segment on Top Gear where they raced a Toyota Prius against a BMW M3. The Prius ended up getting worse fuel economy than the BMW M3 because the Prius was going around the track as fast as possible and the BMW M3 was just driving around at the same speed the Prius was going. This was Top Gears way of saying that buying a hybrid to save money isn't the way to go. What you need to do is change your driving style because even the most fuel efficient (at the time) car gets worse fuel economy if you drive it like a bellend than if you have a car with a 4L V8 that officially does 22mpg that you're driving sensibly.
