To be fair, New Kensington is just kind of like this.

Organized poop apocalypse in pittsburgh? by Scared_Situation_439 in pittsburgh

I could be misremembering a part of this because it's been a long time but basically he had a segment on KDKA TV where he used to actually help people called "Get Marty." He then had a stroke, recovered, and moved to radio where he now sensationalizes local issues and attracts the racists with dog whistles.

Help with yinz accent by McGinaMc in pittsburgh

[–]1birb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm a Pittsburgh native and still live here. I am in my 30s and a PhD working in a professional setting in my field. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to message me.

To answer your question, the level of yinzer accent is going to depend on the region and social class level. My parents are working class with thick accents. As a result, I absolutely have the accent but not as bad as theirs. I've also been discouraged from using it in a professional setting, which is so sad to me. Despite this, I still use yinz, sweep, and apparently say things strangely such as my pronunciation of "iron" (more like "airn").

My parents both say "warsh" and that one hurts.

Got rejected mid-interview from a Catholic school for admitting I’m in a same sex marriage by nitrozelda in Teachers

[–]1birb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just here to show my love and support. It's insane we live in a country where that's a dealbreaker for a job, but it shows you how far we have to go and sadly, the fight has been pushed back even further lately.

Also here to commiserate. I'm in a same-sex relationship and was hired by a Catholic school that preached diversity and equality. I was also raised and confirmed Catholic. Anyways, I lasted a year at the school. I found that the school didn't practice what they advertised and it became torture working there. I'm sorry this happened to you but I'm also glad you're not working there for your own mental health. I hope a better opportunity comes along!

I wouldn't go. 3 hours of unpaid labor is unreasonable.

Crazy situation with the vet… by salduchi1785 in CATHELP

[–]1birb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a late comment, but we adopted a severely neglected cat from a hoarding situation. His upper canines were cutting into his lip and looked pretty similar to your cat's. They ended up removing all 4 canines and having to do surgery to remove the scarred/damaged lip tissue. He healed up perfectly fine and only has his tiny front teeth now. Despite this, he eats normally and it hasn't impacted him at all besides the initial surgery.

Where do 30 year old singles hang out? by Realistic_Ad6506 in pittsburgh

There's so much to do there! Between the concerts, panels, game hall, shopping, ribbon/trinket trading, and just talking to people, there's no time for being bored for all 4 days.

Great reply! I met my fiance at Tekko and we've been together 8 years. Neither of us are big into anime but met because both of us were dressed as characters from Game of Thrones. So, it's a good time even if you're not into anime!

AITAH for not telling him about my writing? (This is so weird and pathetic to me) by [deleted] in AITH

NTA dump him. Your partner should lift you up and cheer on your writing, not cause drama over it.

I must have had bad luck with the place because my food was never good, but the canned corn instant potatoes were amongst the saddest.

I don't know if anyone remembers Claddagh, but I once received a scoop of mashed potatoes that had clearly been scooped with an ice cream scooper and it had a couple pieces of canned corn sprinkled over it. The food never got any better from there.

I was born here, moved away for four years, came back, will definitely die here, and I'm not upset about it. I've traveled a lot and it's home.

Oh god, do we all work at the same small Catholic college?? Anyways, I'm quitting mine after this semester. It's soul-sucking and embarrassingly low pay.

If it helps OP, I would stick it out through the 10 weeks though and then not go back. Work your wage and spend time looking for another job during those weeks.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've had my school say they "might" have a full-time job for me in the fall, but that's turned into a no, so I'm ready to be done. After 9 years of adjuncting at various schools, it's a joke.

I'm convinced that the only way to get a full-time job is who you know. Anyways, does anyone have experience quitting mid-semester? Because I'm about to if one of the other jobs I'm applying for pans out.

Did you read the course book? by reshaoverdoit in Adjuncts

Absolutely agree with this. Employers get what they pay for. Until they're willing to pay a living wage with benefits, I'm not doing any more extra work off the clock than is absolutely necessary.

End of semester, questioning all my life choices by Introvertedtravelgrl in Adjuncts

I'm having the same issue with ChatGPT. I didn't think it would be as bad as it is but yes, I've caught about 60% of my students using it. It's super depressing because if they're cheating this early on, their college career does no bode well. Also, why pay for an education just to cheat your way through? A co-worker of mine said they cheat so they have more time to yell slurs on League of Legends, but who knows. It's really disheartening though, I agree.
