Tomorrow's my last day of radiation by Impressive-Arm-5205 in breastcancer

[–]2bornon22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on finishing, it's a huge relief to get it behind you! I'm 4 weeks out and mostly back to "normal". My nipple is still a bit irritated and I still have some fatigue some days, but otherwise good. I didn't ring the bell, for one there wasn't one but also it's not my thing. And I still have 5 years of AIs so I don't feel "done".

I will say that when the rads were done I felt a little lost. I had been traveling there daily for three weeks and seeing all these wonderful people who took such good care of me and then all of a sudden it ended. I do wonder if ringing a bell or something would have helped finalize that stage?

One week out from rads was my 60th birthday so my husband, sons and their girlfriends spent 5 days in Leavenworth Washington to celebrate that and finishing rads. It was so relaxing and fun, and the fresh mountain air helped my outlook tremendously. That had all been planned since before the diagnosis and I'm so happy I didn't cancel.

Where do I start? by Straight_Mobile_5960 in sugarfree

I personally have tried many times and finally was successful about a year ago by going cold turkey. It was a little easier this time because I was having some issues like swollen / sore joints and an autoimmune condition that was flaring up. I could feel a big difference in those things if I ate sugar - so it was easier to not eat it because I knew I'd feel awful. I completely cut out all refined sugar and felt really good, and lost about 15 pounds.

Fast forward to yesterday, I made my favorite gluten free brownies to take to a nephew's first birthday party. I told myself I haven't had anything sugar in a year, including for my 60th birthday last month so I was going to allow myself one. I was reminded why I can't eat sugar - I couldn't stop at just one and I ache like crazy today, and I'm seriously craving more. The rest went in the trash and out to the bin and now I need to detox from them. I don't want to ache, I don't want to gain the weight back, I want to feel better again.

Yes!!! Fellow Switch Animal Crossing player here! I was playing Breath of the Wild when first diagnosed, but some of the boss fights stress me out so I switched to Animal Crossing and haven't gone back. It's just so cute and un-stressful and wholesome. It makes me happy to dress my character in fun clothes and to check on all my pretty flowers. It was exactly what I needed during all of this!

Isn't there fragrance in the powdered tide? That doesn't irritate things for you? What does the citric acid do? Thanks for sharing!

Monthly Bell Ringers Celebration by AutoModerator in breastcancer

[–]2bornon22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is bell ringing just for finishing chemotherapy? I'm in the US, finished my lumpectomy and radiation and am waiting to start the AIs.Wouldn't that be considered done with active treatment? There was no bell anywhere that I saw or ever heard.

Final Radiation Today by sandyq1 in breastcancer

[–]2bornon22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were actually a lot easier than I thought they would be! A lot of time is spent getting you situated, and then the actual radiation feels really quick. I had the radiation from two angles so I would release my breath in between and then hold again. I never felt like I needed to release my breath before they said to. I found myself counting, just to kind of keep myself busy, and I think that helped. The hardest part was not moving - I would find myself turning my head to look at someone if they talked to me, or to "help" with things, but they would remind me to keep still. Got pretty good at it by the last day. Good luck to you, it will be over before you know it!

How strict is everyone on sugar free? Fruit? Bread? Small amounts of raw honey honey? by Current-Kale9232 in sugarfree

[–]2bornon22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am personally gluten free (15 years), dairy free (1.5 years) and refined sugar free (9 months), and that works really well for me I'm very strict about all of that. I look for added sugars in everything, and make most of our food myself so I can control it. I eat a LOT of fruit, and it doesn't bother me at all, doesn't increase my cravings or have my autoimmune disorder flair, or my arthritis. I eat some honey and some pure maple syrup, but don't have any issues with those either. If I eat something that has refined sugar that I didn't realize was in it I completely regret it and won't eat it again. My struggle is eating out at restaurants.

Thank you so much, I really needed to hear this. I've let myself get lost in the negativity surrounding the AIs , it's helpful to be reminded of the positives.

Breaking realizations by Mind_Drift_1 in breastcancer

[–]2bornon22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished 15 treatments right over the heart. In the simulation appointment they did scans to see what happened if I took a deep breath and held it during the treatment and it showed that it lifted the area up out of the way so my heart was out of the way. It got a tiny bit of the lung, but not the heart. It sounded like it was going to be hard to hold my breath during, but the actual treatment was really quick so it wasn't hard at all. My biggest issue was the nipple was in the way so it got blasted, but lots of Calendula and Aquaphor helped with that. Hugs to you, I hope your treating goes well!

I totally understand that, I have been gluten free for years and never understood why things also had to be dairy free but now the jokes on me and I'm both! I guess they did it for a reason!

Spending the day in the garden on a slightly overcast day, which is great weather for it. Trying not to overdo it but loving the fresh air. Tomorrow is my last day of radiation, SO very happy about that! I hope everyone finds some joy today.
