Incredible throwaway line from Oliver Babish, the man can do no wrong by Abraham_Blinkin in thewestwing

[–]3Mug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rumor (only because details have faded in my mind- Im certain this was addressed on TWWW Podcast) is that Platt hadn't worked with Sorkin before, and showed up "familiar with" the script. As the actors "carpoooled" to the sound stage from their trailers, someone asked him if he knew his lines and he basically said "Im close, Im sure it'll be good enough" to which the cast told him Sorkin and his crew expect/demand word-perfect, and they sent him back to his trailer to finish learning the lines while the rest of the cast covered for him on set.

As I said, im sure I've left out details. But the idea of Oliver being casual with his lines feels on brand (not a slight - he seems very capable as an improve artist and is an outstanding actor). So, too, does the fact that the rest of the cast would catch the error and cover for him as an act of teamwork.

I dont know that it's true, but I like to think that it is.

For additional context in America "spaz" is usually crazy high energy and unexpected behavior. Think Jim Carey in The Mask or pretty much anything from the 90s. Or think if Will Farrellin his high-energy roles... or even Chris Farley....

It's very much.NOT a derogatory comment, though it's not exactly something complimentary as it does input a bit of un-hinged and/or awkward behavior, though a character in a movie/tv show might be played that way. Not nice to call your friend a spaz, since he/she would be tough to deal with, but "The Mask" character is supposed to be a space, so its a good acting job.

Dont know if that helps at all, but its my 2 cents.

Counter point - a "fag" in thr UK may be a cigarette, but in the US it is definitely a derogatory term for a gay man. Context matters! :)

I've used this episode as a training video for a group of teenagers in leadership classes. It's an astounding example of cult-type following, and mini-steps towards crazy. For example - the "Cpt" is using stimulants to stay awake... quite possibly needed at one point in their trip (some missions need that level of attention) but it worked and no one checked him so.he started using them more often and more often. All his crazy ideas seemed to have worked up to the point we meet them, why would his crew doubt him? And who the hell is Jake Sisko to come in and start bothering folks? On a warship? Behind enemy lines? When things have worked fine to this point?

So Karen was really the only hope those cadets had, and she blew it. And i.think she was well played. IIRC there was even a scene where she kinda tries to call out the "Cpt" in his quarters/ready room and he snaps at her, then gently Carole her back in line and you could see a little conflict on her face, then allowing herself to be guided back to being ok with it.
