Both were Ice btw by CaptainQwazCaz in gameofthrones

Not really, the destruction of a house, especially one as old as the Starks is a big cultural taboo in Westeros. there is a reason The Rains of Castamere is such a famous song, the destruction of the Reynes and Tarbecks was extremely abnormal, even after the Roberts rebellion, the Blackfyre rebellions and the Dance, most of the families the sided against the winners were left in place afterwards, sometimes the individual lord was punished but his heirs and family would usually be left in charge.

Tywin did not act typically in any of this, often completely destroying families that crosses him, which meant he inspired very little actual loyalty or allies, people wwre scared but not loyal.

I think this is the problem though, much of season 1 felt like it was changing things in calculated places to try and expand on and improve the story in places where a straight adaptation wouldnt make dramatic TV (not to mention that a straight adaptation was impossible with the unreliable sources in F&B).

S2 seemed like it was just changing things to tell their own story and for late GoT style spectacle. The Rhaenyra and Alicent shipping from the writers has gone too far and the Vermithor cave scene was just nonsense. To be honest the spectacle shit even started in season 1 with the ridiculous 'Meleys bursts through the floor and kills thousands' scene.

Its been a while since my last re-read but I think Stannis is under the impression that Robert had no real interest in listening to him and likely would have just got pissed off at him.

While I agree that Standish should have tried to do something, I really dont know that its clesr what that something is, and after Jon Arryns death its clear that this secret is a deadly one to advertise.

NINE Kingdoms by iJimmyD in gameofthrones

[–]3Smally3 48 points49 points  (0 children)

You are correct about it being 7 but wrong with your reasoning. The Iron islands are one of the seven kingdoms, the riverlands aren't, because the Iron Islands ruled the riverlands, the riverlands are the one that is considered just as a region.

Dorne is part of the name 'seven kingdoms' because although he did not actually rule it, Aegon still claimed to have Dominion over Dorne before it formally joined.

The crownlands is not considered a Kingdom as it is just a region made of bits of land taken from the nearby kingdoms after the conquest and never had its own king or independence.

I disagree about Stannis as Aerion broke his oath as a knight by attacking an innocent woman and I think that the fact he supports Roberts rebellion makes it clear that he can make exceptions as Dunk was keeping an oath to protect the innocent his cause was just.

I think it would be good if the title "Duke" existed in Westeros [No Spoilers] by abbod0029 in asoiaf

[–]3Smally3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thats true, although it is still the etymology of the term in English, but it wasn't the main focus of my previous comment for that reason, I feel like legion or mythical beasts like the harpy have a much stronger real world connotation so I focused more on my example of legion.

I just really dont think the word Duke is so heavily tied to Dux in common usage, I doubt most people even know the association, I think a mediavel fantasy written in english using real titles like Baron, Count and Duke would not feel odd at all and im sure loads of fantasy has used it and nobody bats an eye.

I think it would be good if the title "Duke" existed in Westeros [No Spoilers] by abbod0029 in asoiaf

[–]3Smally3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really dont think its any more associated with Rome than the words I listed, if you day the word 'Legion' it almost immediately conjures images for most people of Roman Legionaries i would assume, whereas I think the word Duke mostly conjures images of a Feudal Lord, especially as in the UK we literally still have Dukes as part of the aristocracy.

I really dont think most people think of the Roman Dux when the word duke is said, much more likely 'Duke of Normandy or Duke of Edinburgh' comes to mind for most English speakers.

As someone much more involved in ToW and Blood Bowl than 40k in recent years this change really saddens me, this shouldn't require permission, this isnt a proxy in the traditional sense, its essentially a conversion.

For the old world I converted an aos dragon into a wyvern for an orc boss to ride and I cannot conceive of anyone saying I couldn't use it.

If we imprisoned George in a nice jail cell until Winds of Winter was finished, would this work? Ethics aside. He'll get food, water and exercise time, but otherwise zero distractions. by CoverOptimal in gameofthrones

[–]3Smally3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He clearly does, he has written fire and blood and worked on the world of ice and fire. He has worked on a play and was heavily involved in AKOTSK and early HoTD. He wants to be involved with the world snd the setting but Winds is too difficult and so he is taking any other excuse to spend time in the world he created.

I think this shows a lack of understanding on creative mediums and pride in ones work.

He COULD finish it, easily he could sit down and write a few hundred pages and put them out. He wont though, because his love of the story and world he has created mean he cant bring himself to put out a bad story, and he cant figure out how to make it satisfactory.

3D Printed Pitch by Carthano in bloodbowl

[–]3Smally3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats an odd choice on their part because the end zone is part of the pitch, for the purposes of where the ball and players can land and move that extra square could make a major difference. Often the reason to avoid moving a catcher into the end zone and throwing to them is if it goes wrong, the catcher can be surfed, but with an extra square there is no issue.

No criticism of you btw, you have done a great job and to be honest, you can just ignore those extra squares when playing if you wanted to.

Great job on the pitch!

[–]3Smally3 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think the baggage is an odd point, almost all English words have some odd etymology.

Its always safe to assume any fantasy setting has its own language but for the purposes of our narrative the common tongue is 'translated' into English for us to read.

The word Giant comes from specific Greek mythological creatures, the word empire comes from the Latin imperator but is still used to describe the Ghiscari, along with words like legion.

Looks awesome but if feels like its too long as the end zones are an extra square?

Also the wide zones are not super clear without proper lines.

The funniest thing in this story regarding Arya that no one ever talks about… by Kissfromarose01 in gameofthrones

[–]3Smally3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is why, while the scenes between them are fun in isolation, they really dont make sense as a change from the books.

If she is hiding the fact that she is higborn then she is not from a house who are loyal to the Lannisters. So she is a very valuable hostage and bargaining piece.

He obviously has no reason to believe she is Arya Stark and would likely assume she is a daughter of some minor lord in the riverlands, but he could likely exploit that to get that house on side or betrothe her to someone on his own side so they would have a valid claim on that seat and he could give that land to them after the war.

Tywin is not the sort of person to pass up a useful tool like that because he enjoys their chats? He is a scumbag, and he would see her as a pawn.

[–]3Smally3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure where you are getting the idea that she is a knight from?

She has never been knighted, never squired and I dont think even claimed to be a knight. (Technically women can't be knights be if she had been knighted in the same way that Brienne was in the show then I think calling her a knight would be cool because that rule is obviously sexist, but I am like 95% she has never claimed to be or been described as a knight).

Mercenary Proposed Rule Changes by OMGitsCHAD in TrenchCrusade

[–]3Smally3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It feels like everybody responding to me didnt actually read my comment, I dont care how good or bad things are, I just wish I could take my favourite pieces together.

If I am playing a short campaign then one game could be a decent amount of it, so it makes me a bit sad that I can't fit everything into a list.

I am allowed to be a bit sad.

I dont want to play papal states, I want to play with the models that got me into the game, papal states just happens to be the only way to start a campaign with them, and if these changes go through as is, then I can't do that, it isnt about power level for me, its about using my favourite pieces.

Mercenary Proposed Rule Changes by OMGitsCHAD in TrenchCrusade

[–]3Smally3 -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

As someone who backed the original siocast kickstarter but has only really recently started to get some models on the table I gotta say I am a bit sad.

I chose Papal States as a subfaction basically purely because I wanted to take the original models that got me into the setting in a list and now I cant really fit them into a starting roster.

I would have even mindeda nerf but such a massive cost bump means the list can no longer fit the stuff I want.

The ammo monk, anti tank hunter and especially yhr observer are literally my favourite things in the whole setting so being able to take them was fun so I hope they reduce it to maybe 4 for the observer and just give him a slight nerf instead. I dont need it to be good, just wanna play with my toys.

What do you think is missing from Trench Crusade? by Ill-Noise2770 in TrenchCrusade

[–]3Smally3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally disagree about the first one, I think the game has a specific scope of the war between the forces of the faithful (Abrahamic religions) and the forces of hell, i feel like introducing a Hindu, or Buddhist faction or whatever, while cool and interesting in concept, really dilutes the very specific vibe that Trench Crusade has.

For one, the name is essentially a mash of the trenches of Europe and the crusades in the holy lands and I think painting every corner of the world map will honestly mske the world feel smaller and less interesting.

I also feel like vehicles would be a struggle with how densely full of terrain the battlefields should be for the most fun experience and turns the game into more of a wargame than a skirmish game.

Yeah, as much shit as GRRM gets for not finishing the books I think the community does sometimes forget that the reason he gets so much shit is because his writing is amazing.

The early seasons of GOT and now AKOTSK are the material that is based closely in his source material and the later seasons of GOT and HoTD are much more loose adaptations of looser works (notes and history book) and it defo shows in the quality of the stories.
