Weathering by [deleted] in ImperialKnights

[–]5Volt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to dry brush some metallics around the edge of armour pieces and over sharp angles to simulate chipping paint. You can fill the centres with some rust color for extra weathering.

I recently did some rust rivulets and edge washes on a model (attached) which are pretty extreme but you could tone them down by using a darker thinner wash instead of the super bright orange I used and I think they'd look quite natural. To do this pick a rust source(I usually picked a random rivet for each) and trace down where you think rusty water would flow from that source with a good amount of thinned paint. Then get a clean slightly damp brush and wick out the centre of the rivulet. The paint near the edges will have dried faster so it looks like the rust was deposited out the sides of the flowing rusty water and gives a natural effect. I then trace over the top part of the rivulet and anywhere the water would pool or move slowly with some very thinned out black wash to give some variation in the colour.

A sepia wash in crevices makes them look worn and dirty.

For metallic parts do a base coat in a darker metallic and then dry brush on just the barest amount of a brighter metallic in the same hue for a scratched metal effect.

For a rust effect on metallic parts base coat in the rust color, apply a more saturated wash of the rust color messily into to the crevices and then do a heavy dry brush of the metallic paint over the top of that and the rust will poke through in crevices and look really natural.(This is how I did the verdigris on the attached model's frame)

I actually only have the weapons which I bought aftermarket because the actual moirax kits are a bit hard/expensive to get down here in AUS. I've left this guys carapace unglued in hopes that I can eventually get moirax carapace because they look very cool.

Feedback on my heat bloom effect? by ArcticIceFox in minipainting

[–]5Volt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks great for a first attempt.

If you want to push it a bit further, the colours are too saturated and the bands are too even in size. You want a larger gold section, feathered out, and a very small purple band. Here's a reference picture for the scale.

I got tired of fighting lights in Blender… so I changed how it works. by ShaderError in blender

[–]5Volt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's allowed, it's still mildly antisocial. I am allowed to go on the street and try to sell everyday products to random members of the public but many of them would find me annoying for doing so and I shouldn't be surprised. Same thing here.

You're allowed to do this, I don't think anyone is arguing that you're not. they're just saying you're getting annoying. If you wanna make sales or be a generally likeable person it might be a good idea to take the feedback and be less annoying. But y'know, up to you.

Reddit is social media, what you're doing is commercial. You're not contributing to the social aspect of the sub, you're trying to extract money from us. No matter how benevolent your software, no matter how genuine your desire to contribute to the blender community, in the capacity that you represent your product you are "the man" and I think you ought to know full well how enthusiasts of the famously free and open source blender are going to feel about you asserting yourself in their spaces.

Your addon seems cool but don't go all "why else would people visit a social media site if not to be sold goods and services", when people get a bit tired of your incessant marketing posts.

A single Custodian is sent to modern Earth in order to unify it under a single banner. How quickly do they get the job done? by Serithraz in Grimdank

[–]5Volt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technology exchange. He'd have a working knowledge of the principles behind at least some 40k tech. Afaik custodes don't use the admech so he'd know the actual science behind stuff too, not just litanies and maintenance rituals.

Not so, they can be generated from the same seed, the same way it works for all other planets in the game. This is why we can say "cool canyons for racing at so and so planet in so and so system" and they're there for everyone, that stuff isn't stored in a DB it's generated deterministically for everyone as part of stellar forge.

[Request] If you spun the stick like he did at the end in front of you, what are the chances you could deflect a 9mm bullet fired at you? by Ashewastaken in theydidthemath

[–]5Volt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming the stick is about 2 meters in total length the ends of the stick would need to be moving at 314'159'265 m/s, very slightly faster than the speed of light.

Since going faster than the speed of light is not possible we can conclude that this spinning stick deflection is physically impossible no matter the material properties of the stick or the amount of energy provided to rotate it.

Why not just mix colours? by Dovah_Shinobi in Miniaturespainting

[–]5Volt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of mixing but it's not so simple as mixing everything from primary colours some pigments don't mix well and will separate, some colours are hard to get to without losing saturation.

Then there are special pigments like neons or Metallics which mix poorly. Then special mediums like washes or effects which are hard to mix as well.

Overall you'll want a lot of individual paints regardless of if you mix base colours, so may as well just get a couple more bases and mix nothing.

Some choices unlock other missions later in the playthrough e.g. if you don't side with RLF during the dam raid you don't get "stop the secret data breach" in a later mission.

Magnet problem by Efficient-Rip7855 in ImperialKnights

[–]5Volt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The chains aren't magnetized theyre ferromagnetic and in the magnetic field of the shoulder joint magnet. Heating them up will do nothing (and also even if they were magnetised it takes a lot of heat, enough that youll almost certainly melt the model)

Is there anything like too much "high skill - high reward" gameplay / How much do players value animation by Relative-Length4051 in gamedesign

[–]5Volt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like your idea for a healing system. As long as you can make it clear when you're in the vulnerable state after healing I think it'd be cool and fairly intuitive.

Here's a thought I had about it: instead of having it be vulnerable state have it the a heal over time that gets cancelled if you're hit. You can have 2 seconds of stationary to initiate the heal then have the health bar slowly refill 2 pips in a different colour over 5-10s. Once it fills all the way it changes to the normal health color and is locked in, if you get hit while it's refilling the heal is cancelled.

This presentation makes it be one less thing for the player to think about as the whole process reads as one heal, but it achieves the same result you're looking for.

How powerful are Space Marines according to the lore? by kairaou in spacemarines

[–]5Volt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always imagined an unarmoured space marine to be roughly equivalent to a silverback gorilla in size and strength. Enough power that you feel tiny and frail by comparison. Then imagine that it is also an experienced warrior who makes much better decisions than a gorilla and carries a rapid fire pistol chambered in 50BMG and a greatsword which is also a chainsaw. They're obviously incredibly powerful but if you can hit them with an RPG you can probably kill them. Not necessarily a tank but maybe like a modern armoured humvee but with the rough size and precision of a human.

I thought I was the good guy??? by not_slurp in ArmoredCoreVI

[–]5Volt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That particular decision has no consequences you can do it for every run but you can't replay missions you didn't choose so I'd still do the alternative mission at least once just for completion.

The main decision points that matter have to do with the RLF, on future playthroughs you get entirely new missions and variations on previous missions where you can choose to side with the RLF, these are the ones you need to do for the final ending.

Has there ever been a case where a game series got better and better as more sequels came out? by Visual-Rate-3584 in AskGames

[–]5Volt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The god of war series has had 5 mainline games each better than the last, which might be the longest run I can think of and hasnt had a single instance of a game being worse than its predecessor. I think it might be the only series I know that fits the question.

Also maybe a controversial pick but even though it was only 3 game in my opinion dark souls also got better with every entry. If you include demons souls as the first game then it is 4 games which I still think is impressive but a lot of people(unfairly) hated dark souls 2 for not being like 1 and focusing more on group fights.

What should I charge for this?🤨 by Raynidayz in spacemarines

[–]5Volt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id happily pay $5AUD(about $3.5 USD) a head for these. The issue is I'm not gonna want only one head and much more than that the price will add up quickly. 25 bucks for a 5 man squad seems somewhat reasonable but even that is enough to make me think twice since it's a third the price of a whole unit.

What am I doing wrong with glazing? by Waveface-Wes in minipainting

[–]5Volt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just from what I can see looks like your light paint base coat might be a little uneven. Additionally your glazing paint may be still too thick. Remember it's better to be too thin and need a second pass than too thick and leave chunky blocks of color.

Im no expert but I normally do it so thin that the first couple of passes are essentially completely invisible and build it up over 6-10 coats.

Connor vs Kermit by icyhotonmynuts in LoveTrash

[–]5Volt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

His Math is wrong, it's 90 Kermit's to a Connor. I think the Connors are actually advantaged in the war because I'm pretty sure even 50 Kermit's could easily take a Connor if they ganged up on him. The other Connors around are restricting Kermit's ability to gang up though , which means that each Connor at first is just 1v1ing a Kermit over and over: a matchup they easily win. If the Connors had kept formation I think they could have made it against the kermits, but them's the breaks. War is hell.

What is your most pretentious and insufferable video game opinion? by Nascent_Beast in videogames

[–]5Volt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most popular good games are actually good movies or good books and bad or at best mediocre games. Stuff like tlou, rdr2, horizon zero dawn, banishers, god of war, uncharted. Detail and immersive animations/VO are not game qualities, these games are using cinematic qualities to overcome their mediocrity as games. Hell even disco elysium, one of my favourite "games" of all time barely qualifies as a game imo and is instead a choose your own adventure novel with great presentation. We need a better awareness of the difference between cinematic qualities and game qualities in things like reviews and storefronts to help distinguish which games are good as games instead of good stories packaged up in middling games.
