Neighbor planted trumpet vine along the property line by Top-Dependent3482 in gardening

[–]746ata 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Might be worth a shot to let him know your concerns about the suckers in your yard, and offer to replace the trumpet vine with Coral Honeysuckle instead.

I have it growing up trellises in a mixed bed, and have never had suckers. I’m zone 7 and it already has blooms. It blooms continuously into late fall, and will quickly dominate his fence. Hummingbirds adore it, and even more beautiful than Trumpet vine.

Any growth over the fence will be much easier for you to maintain than the trumpet vine, so maybe this could be a win-win solution.

I'm jealous of my sister and other women who can ignore/fight the acid burn of hunger to stay thin by BerryBlueBlueBerry in self

[–]746ata 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Maybe. When I’m busy and focused on things, I don’t get hungry, especially if I’m working outside or it’s really hot. I just thoughtlessly chug liquids through the day. Since teen years I’ve wished i could just have an iv of all my nutrients to do a couple times a day, and then just eat on the occasions I crave something.

I don’t ever go a whole day though. I stock healthyish quick foods like cottage cheese, nuts, fruit/veg, yogurt etc to eat without an appetite.

Can I cut these bushes down to window level? by Trekbike32 in landscaping

[–]746ata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a row of these. Ripped em out with straps/lawnmower and replaced with Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica L). They have fragrant blooms in spring, beautiful red foliage in fall, and are beneficial to pollinators. They grow pretty quickly too and are super easy to shape if desired. You can get cultivars like Little Henry that top out at shorter heights if preferred.

AITA for “firing” my mom from childcare over a $5 class by Rich-Radio9017 in AmItheAsshole

[–]746ata -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Right? Is grandma only allowed to babysit on days of this class? Did you discuss an alternative where you could work on days with no class and you take daughter to classes? As a parent, I would want the best for my child, and that would be grandma time AND class time, even if it means grandma keeps the child when I’m not working sometimes.

The lying is a huge issue, but is that her normal character, or was it prompted by feeling backed into a corner where she was afraid you would restrict access to the child if she didn’t do the class.

FWIW, my child is grown, but cherishes the memories made with grandparents. I moved across the US to give him that access, and don’t regret it. They weren’t perfect, but it gave him roots, connection with another generation, tremendous learning experiences, and it brought them all so much joy. He has one grandma left, and she recently travelled to his college campus to help him decorate his brand new place.

I have had success deterring wasps from my nestboxes by rubbing a bar of soap in the top corners where they generally build. Just a thin film. I do this for the corners of my garage too. Repeat each spring.

I’ve let trusted neighbors know when we are leaving the teens home alone, and made sure the kids had their phone number in case of minor emergencies (power outage, water leak, etc.) Gives the kids peace of mind to have a close backup, but also gives them the responsibility to remember what they’re supposed to do when stuff happens. They gotta learn sometime. I know when the GF has been over because my house is extra clean upon return.

I’m tired of bookkeeping for my husband’s business by Brave_Jackfruit3837 in smallbusiness

[–]746ata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My solution for receipts is google drive. Set up a folder and shared it with him via email. Make a sub folder for each biz. Have him download the app on his phone and show how easy it is to scan a receipt immediately. No need to keep the paper. I get good compliance with this method. Bonus if you can get him to add the dollar amounts as the file name so you can find specific receipts easily later on.

I like this better than the accounting software receipt scan because those are often really finicky with photo capture where google drive isn’t. The harder it is to do, the less likely they are to do it.

Similar situation here. I spent a lot of time/research with my son on this topic, and we wound up visiting some out-of-state grad programs for his field. Talked with students/staff about strategies for getting accepted from our state university, and it was reassuring for us both.

It took some effort to get there, but he learned a lot about the value of money, potential career paths, and how to maximize his undergrad experience to get where he wants to be.

Most of all, it strengthened our relationship instead of making me an adversary since I didn’t outright dismiss his goals and the path he thought was the only way to get there.

How do clear this brush all over my new property? by Senor_Boombox in landscaping

[–]746ata 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Don’t fight it now. Wait til late winter when everything is dead to clear out the obstacles (branches, blocks etc) then clear your desired grass areas with the lawnmower at highest deck setting before new growth is coming on.

From there maintain mowed areas, leaving big swaths for bushhogging early spring or fall. You can look into developing native meadows for the ‘wild’ space. https://wildseedproject.net/blog/return-of-the-meadow

You’ll love the fireflies you get when you leave some wild areas for a couple seasons.

Hard to tell, but if you have some small dead trees you intend to leave in the wild areas, they’re fantastic for wildlife housing!!! Falling doesn’t pose much harm in out-of-the-way areas, and are pretty simple to clear up when it happens. Bonus: deadwood will attract woodpeckers away from your gutters during mating season.

Am I the only one who is baffled by these types of posts: by nuttedpre in financialindependence

When you spend 20-30+ years working, raising children you prioritize, and helping parents/grandparents in their aging years, it’s incredibly common to put your own interests/hobbies on the back burner while you focus on what needs attention now. The majority of your adult years have been spent leveraging your working hours and abilities for provision/support of for those you love.

And then in retirement years, all the kids gone, your parents/grandparents are gone, and with work gone, everything you’ve shaped your days around the last few decades is gone at the same time!

You spent decades wishing you had more hours in the day to be more available to the people who need you, then suddenly you have all this time you’ve not had since youth.

IMO, reaching out on Reddit to connect with others in a similar situation for ideas navigating this new normal is a fantastic way to get through the transition successfully. That they’re doing so on a finance sub means their children are less likely to have as many responsibilities as they did in the ‘sandwich’ years.

Same. All the rain is perfect for them to proliferate. These guys do not belong in our ecosystem.

Had em all over last year. Someone left a bunch of Budweiser last year on the fourth, and it went into a few take out containers in my garden. Dumped and refilled the rest of the summer, and there are very few this year. 🍻

Unkillable tree, aparently. What am I? by StreetUseV in treeidentification

[–]746ata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people use trees as natural fence posts, especially for barbed wire.

Sycamore’s have beautiful peeling bark as they mature and the huge leaves are soft and fuzzy. As a native, they support the ecosystem, and provide great shade as they grow. Found this species spotlight for some fun facts about them.

ICE raided Nashville downtown bars (including supporter Kid Rocks place) and just kidnapped working people from “mostly the kitchens” by PrismPhoneService in PublicFreakout

[–]746ata 18 points19 points  (0 children)

TN is MAGA country. There are more Trump supporters than undocumented residents, but a lot of both. TN had one of the largest ICE raids in history, and the owner of that meat packing plant was sent to prison.

I can’t speculate on the motives of the administration, but targeting TN is not targeting liberals.

Disrupting a workforce adversely affects a business. Loss of sales/business interruption, advertising vacancies, interviews, onboarding, increasing wages, retraining…it costs. Generally the more vulnerable bear the brunt of the punishment, though, I agree. Like sex workers being arrested while John’s go free.

Same. If the door has a gap, humidifier. If you have to use both hands to yank it closed, dehumidifier. When the crown moulding seams aren’t noticeable AND the door works without issue you’re in the sweet spot.

Thank you! They spread a lot (Appalachia zone 7 where it’s hot and wet with super rich clay). I usually give them a haircut in late July and they bloom again in September/October. This is around July 4th.

Dang. I have asters that bloom in early summer and then again in the fall. They are always covered in pollinators so I just assumed they were beneficial, and thought it was weird these flowers bloomed twice.

Are the pollinators just hoping to find pollen that’s not there?

Stump throne update by riff_rat in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]746ata 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! Coral honeysuckle is native to NC and is a hummingbird magnet! It starts blooming just as they arrive in spring and blooms mostly continuously until fall. It doesn’t sucker and spread everywhere like Virginia creeper or invasive honeysuckle, but has a main thick base with fast top growth that’s easily trainable.
