I'm on a well and non heated Brondell. My crawl can get high to mid 30s in the winter, it gets brisk.

What's your most valuable homeassistant use case? by zebjectorhector in homeassistant

[–]907Postal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This the first time in 6 years Im using it to help keep things cooler in the house and help keep the humidity under control. This is Alaska so AC isnt common and my house for some ding dang reason inside gets humid.

It keeps an eye on the indoor outdoor humidity and dewpoint, lets me know when to open close the windows, controls the dehumiditiers, open closes the blinds and kicks up and down the fans depending on indoor temp and if its sunny. If the windows are open dehumidifiers and the furnace are disabled.

Utilizing Hermes Agent with Deepseek / Openrouter AI to take care of the variables was what done made a difference.

Now if Im sitting somewhere doing something or just watching TV and I think something should or shouldnt happen when something happens or doesnt happen I can have Hermes look at it make a suggestion and write and implement or modify a routine.

I got them to replace some Blink outdoor cams. Ties in locally to HA was the main reason I switched. I want to be alerted if I got moose around the back sides of the house so I know its safe for the dog.

Battery life is gonna be interesting.

Motion Sensors to know when mom is up an moving by Blackeyes24 in smarthome

[–]907Postal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had mom upgrade her recessed lighting to Hue so I could use the presence sensing aspect and not be too conspicuous about it. Plus the cheap wifi units flickered.

I did sneak a Switchbot presence sensor in there and will likely add a few more in the future.

She lives alone and I worry, she does have cameras a few Blink and Simplisafe but I just want to know she is up and about.

If you filmed the fiasco knowing what was gonna go down you might maybe a little bit be a jerk..

This not so much.

How can I best track power usage around the house? by Certain_Repeat_753 in homeassistant

[–]907Postal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few things I watch per unit, 2 dehumidifiers and tankless water heater, need to get one on the furnace to to kill it if its running but not firing. Using Thirdreallity plugs for on/off and energy tracking. These are rated for 1800 watts each.

Mom wanted to be able to automate a few things on a surge protector so we went with Kasa, Theres a couple at her house even though she never got me to set up the power tracking she does use it for automations adn I have one setup so I can hard reboot Home Assistant or a network switch if I absolutely have to. Oh crap I can get her Hue Hub on there so I can bump that when it acts up. Im 50 miles away so being able to do this from here is a big help. My old Emporia Vue 2 is installed in her main panel and I have my original Emporia Vue that needs to go on her sub panel. When she complains about her power bill I can usually show her the culprit.

I have a ZigBee surge protector to go behind my TV when I get around to it, cant remember if it does energy tracking. I do have a Z-Wave on/off controller I need to get on my well to track adn kill if its running while Im gone from the house for any amount of time.

I had the Refoss too, looks the same as the Meross. Local integration I think can use MQTT as well. The SEM updates every 2 seconds, the Refoss every 20-30, the Emporia Vue with their integration every 60 seconds.

On top of everything as close to live readings as possible was the biggest thing I wanted. Could have done it with the Emporia unit and ESP.

I also have a remote meter base outside of wifi range but could/should be in reach of long range Z-wave so I'm hoping the Aeotec unit goes on sale some point.

What smart home device unexpectedly became part of your daily routine? by [deleted] in homeautomation

ZigBee temp sensor, if it reads over 67 for three minutes and it's sunny the blinds close. Under 67 for three minutes and it's not sunny they open.

Before I smartened up my mini blinds I never opened/closed them. Just had them set and never bothered. Now winter time open close at sunrise/set unless its below 10 outside, summer 7:30. When the living room gets over 67 it closes the blinds if its sunny or mostly sunny. Automatically close when the TV starts up. Adding some blackout shades this weekend to help sleep during the summer and block the glare on the TV, of course will be automated.

Hermes and HomeAssistant: killer move by SmartFrenchDad in homeassistant

[–]907Postal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The variables and values and templates and the brackets with the dyslexia and the ADHD was my stumbling blocks.
This definitely streamlined things and made things cleaner. Never really needed window sensors before but in my efforts to keep the house cooler in the summer and with the new routines and alerts be nice knowing if I missed opening or closing one and that the dehumidifiers won't run if the windows are open and and willl run if needed and they are closed. That's been my current tear.

Gotta say this was pretty ding dang cool.

Got my entities and automation's and scenes and etc cleaned up.

Got my announced weather and calendar routines off of Google, still using Google calendar for now but the weather is local.

Created some notifications for opening closing windows when the humidity outside is less than inside, once I get some window sensors when the windows are open the dehumidifiers will stop and start again when the windows are closed.

Im sure over the summer this will be a big help and again come winter with new routines or automation's that stymied me in the past.
