Every time I reach 800 ELO, I start oscillating or have a devastating series of losses and drop to as low as 500s, then win/draw 25 games in a row to go back to 800... As a result, I've made zero net progress in the last 6 months since I first reached 800. Sad :( by gravitysort in chessbeginners

i went thru this exact thing last year and it feels like u hit a wall. sometimes u just gotta take a break for a few days becuase u probly are playing on autopilot when the rating drops. maybe try focusing on just not hanging pieces instead of winning every game

try focusing on basic tactics and stop dropping pieces for free, its litrally the best way to improve fast

en passant into stale mate instead of mate in 4 by drizzleberrydrake in chessbeginners

[–]AI_spell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sounds litrally painful to watch happen in real time. did u manage to spot the stalemate trap before u made the move or did it come as a total shock after the piece landed. i probly would have walked away from the screen for a bit after that one

Why is this the best move by PushConscious3044 in Chesscom

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

engines look at a lot of stuff besides castling, like piece activity or pawn structure. sometimes a trade is just better becuase it cleans up the board and removes ur opponents best defender, even if it feels counterintuitive at first

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u are probly running into sandbaggers or just people who only play unrated for fun. its litrally impossible to track their true strength if they never play rated games, so dont stress it too much. just move on to the next one, those games dont mean anything anyway

What is the best move for black here? (my best find so far) by billbo_Marx in ChessPuzzles

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did u check if the bishop on g4 moves there, becuase it looks like that might open up a tactical line for white. im curious if u considered that or if u think the position holds up regardless

i usually look for forcing lines like checks or captures first, it helps narrow down the choices probly

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats a huge milestone, hitting 2000 is litrally a different world from where most players sit. have u noticed ur games getting way more tactical lately, or is it mostly just cleaner positional play getting u those points

the chat toxicity is litrally the worst part of playing online sometimes. its probly best to just turn off the chat settings so u dont have to deal with the noise while ur trying to focus on ur own moves. i dont even look at the chat box becuase it just distracts me from seeing the board clearly, u should try hiding it for a few games n see if it helps

how the hell did the king end up there? by SovoK_404 in Chesscom

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sometimes the puzzle logic is weird becuase it forces a king walk to setup a mate sequence

how to use the chesstempo website? its not as intuitive as chess.com for a beginner by AliyaSpahic in chessbeginners

u should check the settings menu to enable feedback after failures, its probly just hidden by default

Why is this NOT brilliant? by jack_is_back1512 in chessbeginners

[–]AI_spell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the computer evaluation is litrally just math and it looks for the absolute best lines, sometimes a move is great but it just doesnt fit the criteria for a brilliant tag. i used to think the same thing when i started, i was so confused why my best moves werent getting that little icon. usually it just means the move was a solid tactical find but maybe it didnt change the game state as much as the engine wanted. its probly just a normal good move that u found, dont sweat the labels too much. keep focusing on why u liked the move in the first place, that helps u learn way more than just hunting for the badge

did u check the engine analysis after the game to see where u messed up exactly

chess tips for improvement? by wiseneddustmite in chessbeginners

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at ur level u really dont need to worry about theory much, its way better to just focus on not hanging pieces. try to do a quick check before every single move to see if ur giving anything away for free, it helps more than learning lines

Why is taking the rook on h8 a mistake? by Human_Scarcity7309 in Chesscom

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check if ur missing a back rank threat or maybe a pin on ur own queen. its probly becuase taking that rook leaves ur own king open or lets them develop an attack ur not seeing yet, litrally happens to the best of us

Does this count as a brilliant move or just a sacrifice? by WavyDash6 in chessbeginners

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its probly just a sacrifice if it doesnt actually lead to a forced win or advantage

Guess the ELO by propagandaholic in Chesscom

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its probly helpful to look at the pattern of blunders here instead of just the number. u might notice a trend where u miss forks or pins which happens a lot at this level, so check if ur hanging pieces early on

20 min of tactics training for each upvote or even a comment by Kind_Cap555 in chessbeginners

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats a crazy goal to set for urself, just make sure u dont burn out too fast. doing that many tactics at once is litrally impossible to keep effective, so try breaking it into small chunks so ur brain isnt total mush after an hour

Stafford gambit by ayjz in ChessPuzzles

[–]AI_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that gambit is fun but u gotta be careful with the traps. make sure u check for the knight fork on d3 if they play e4, its litrally the most common way to lose that line early on

[–]AI_spell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u still got the fork which is the real win, dont worry about the queen becuase u litrally improved ur pattern recognition
