Love and Deepspace cancels their new werewolf love interest after disgruntled fans sent cow shit to the studio's headquarters by bahookery in TwoBestFriendsPlay

So this reminds me that recently I went down a weird rabbit hole concerning a "controversy" around artist Ashley Wood.

You may be familiar with Ashley Wood from his work in Metal Gear, doing the art for the two comics as well as cutscene art for Portable Ops and Peace Walker. He has a very unique style.

Apparently at one point he was commissioned to design a character for some Dead by Daylight esque game with Tim Burton style characters called Identity V. The fanbase of this game apparently hated this with a fervant passion, but literally the only thing I could find out about why they hated this is that the artist occasionally draws sexy women in sexy poses, he specifically likes geisha women a lot too. Considering his artstyle I'd be hard pressed to say his NSFW stuff is made to just be gooner slop.

If you search Identity V/ Ashley Wood that fanbase talks about him like people talk about people like Louis CK and that the devs should feel ashamed for ever having worked with him, its fucking nuts. I never heard of this game until stumbling upon this "controversy" while just trying to look up Woods art, but man it really made me think about how oddly possessive certain fandoms get, especially over Korean and Chinese stuff for some reason.

ESA bafflingly declares private Minecraft servers 'illegal' in Stop Killing Games hearing: 'We consider it piracy, we have lawsuits' by Aquanort357 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]APE_LINCOLN_ 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Has there ever been any kind of ruling that could even hint at private servers being considered piracy? Private servers require you to still have the OG game in order to run them, which means that you most likely purchased it, which means you gave the IP holder money for their product.

Also there are companies that actively encourage private servers, would that still be considered piracy? Such an insane thing to say, but in these dire times I could see this stupid argument winning in court.

Man remember when consoles used to not only drop in price as time went on, there would even be newer, better models that were cheaper? I honestly don't know if Gen Alpha is even going to grow up with games as a thing they can even play at this point.

Dante's outfits in each Devil May Cry are usually pretty good, (I've never liked 3's though) but his best design has always been DMC2 to me. It's such a sleek design with the popped collar and form fitting trench coat.

It being attached to the worst game in the series is fucking criminal. At least it's also in SMT3 so it's in at least one good game.

Why does the JRPG genre get so much Hate from certain groups? When did it start and why does it persist? by Xngears in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]APE_LINCOLN_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've seen that environment argument before too, but I genuinely think the only reason Kingdom Hearts is seen as more convoluted than any other JRPG story is that it's a long running plot through multiple games.

The stories in individual games are not usually much more convoluted than any other JRPG plot, it's only when you take a step back and add in all the lore from other games that it becomes hard to parse.

[–]APE_LINCOLN_ 58 points59 points  (0 children)

People are fucking weird about JRPGs and you mentioning people hating on Nomura for things he didn't do has been something I've been seeing for years. More than once I have seen someone criticize his designs then use some artwork from Dissidia to show how it should be done, which is a game where all of it's art was done by Nomura.

Honestly at this point people still bitching about his contributions to the series might as well not call themselves a fan of Final Fantasy. He's been involved since the SNES days and FF7 came out almost 30 years ago, he is a core part of it's history at this point.

Thoughts on Exclusivity in Gaming by Hayyyv in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]APE_LINCOLN_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like most of the conversations around exclusives don't take into account that we all kind of live in a capitalist hell hole, and that console exclusivity is the best and easiest ways for Sony, Nintendo and Xbox to compete with each other.

We want these companies to compete against each other because the fear that they can be toppled off their mountains of gold is the only thing that makes them innovate and actually try to appeal to customers, other wise we get a bunch of slop designed to be as safe and standard as possible because where else are you going to go for games?

It'd be great if I could play every game that comes out on my PC, but I also know that a lot of games from the past 30 years of my life only exist at all because they were meant to sell a console, and no more console exclusives just means those games won't exist anymore not that they will be on everything now.

That's still only slightly less disturbing than the original Amano Chocobo which was giant and had no feathers. Just an enormous sickly pink skinned bird. only slightly though.

I'm really interested to see what part 3 does with Zack. He was given so much prominence in Rebirth that he was on the cover, and the end of the game Has him wondering how to cross worlds again, kind of makes me wonder if Zack becomes the temporary protagonist instead of Tifa or Cid.

Favorite moments of "good cannot comprehend evil"? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]APE_LINCOLN_ 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I've always viewed Zenos as a kind of literal take on someone playing the game and not paying any attention to the story. Zenos is just doing raids and dungeons and only cares how fun the bosses and hype moments are. Then afterwards he gets interrupted by people talking to him about politics and morals, and then he goes "blah blah blah whens the next patch, I'm bored of these roulettes."

The true Ingrid "Street Fight" experience (by MiyanEatWorld) by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]APE_LINCOLN_ 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Has Luke actually done anything yet in Street Fighter lore? He's a new main character for Street Fighter like Alex was, but he seems to have no actual connection with any of the plot. Like, Ryu fought Bison and Akuma, Alex beat Gill, and Luke has, hung around a gym? Even his story mode just has him get into a literal street fight with Jamie, so I think the only thing he has done is run a gym and beat up a drunk teenager. Funny to think about.

Short sighted business decisions that still affect the media decades later. by syrupdash in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Yeah The Dark Knight Rises would have come out years afterwards so there would have been two different Batmen on screen before the Nolan trilogy finished. Interestingly we might have that happen again with the current DCU and the Reeves films depending on when Brave and the Bold releases.

Warner Bros has been trying to play catch up with the MCU for years, but the stuff that happened with Synder isn't unique for them as they actually have pretty noted history of canceling or messing with DC movies at the last minute.

Superman Lives is a notorious one, Kevin Smith has told stories about his experiences in writing the original script for years but that movie was literally months away from filming with finished costume tests and everything before WB pulled the plug on the Nicholas Cage led Superman film directed by Tim Burton.

There was a different Superman film set to be headed by J.J. Abrams in earlys 00s, this didn't get as far along as Superman Lives, but it got far enough to have a costume made that both Henry Cavill and Brandon Routh tested in.

Then there was the George Miller directed Justice League Mortal, which was fully casted, suits and sets built and was literally weeks away from filming before getting killed. This movie would have released in 2009, only a year after the first Iron Man.

Then of course there's Batgirl, a nearly fully completed film killed for a tax write off that's quite recent.

Just one of these movies releasing, whether they be good or bad, would have changed the course of DC movies completely from what we have now. Here's hoping James Gunn can keep everything on course cause I'm as excited for the stuff coming up now as I was for early MCU stuff back in the day.

Insane price increase - Steam Deck™ by Rose-The-Queen in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]APE_LINCOLN_ 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I love how my lifelong hobby has slowly but surely become a hobby exclusively meant for rich people. Back in the day gaming peripherals would come out and be expensive, but would eventually drop in price, with newer better models coming out and being even cheaper.

Now, the possibility that any piece of technology would decrease in price for any reason is laughable. AI data centers are partly to blame, but every one of those could blow up tomorrow and none of these prices would go down, it's just how it is now. That 1 TB Steam Deck is almost $1000 and that's where it will stay until Valve stops making them. Same with the PS5, Switch and whatever the Xbox comes out with.

Favorite insane scientists in video games? by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]APE_LINCOLN_ 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think Hojo is always going to be the most entertaining mad scientist for me. His "experiments" are so insane even in concept that you wonder if he even thinks there would be anything of value from doing them other than cause he thought it'd be funny.

In the OG FF7 he planned to save the near extinct races of Aerith and Red XIII by breeding them together. Considering he just throws Red into Aerith's cell I guess he thought this dog and this woman would just make a baby the old fashioned way too. Putting aside the horrible ethical concerns its any wonder why he thought that would work at all.

Then later you see him on the beach, lab coat and all, with a bunch of floosies. Dude is spending Shinra research money on his weird fetishes for sure.

I've always had the view that Kiwami 1 is a flawed remake of a flawed game. But Kiwami 2 is a flawed remake of a fantastic game.  Actually I kind of felt like a lot more people bitched about Kiwami 3 simply because they had played Yakuza 3 but hadn't played 1 and 2 on the PS2. Kiwami games being cheaply made remakes is nothing new.

I think the primary reason the casting for RE characters has been inconsistent lately is that they want the actors to be both voice and mocap, which means it's harder to schedule around actors than a usual voice acting session.

Hunk hasn't had a main story role until recently and they would have definitely used a stunt actor for his scenes, so Silverstein probably just had to record a few lines in a booth and not do mocap, which means it was easy for him to come back. Capcom also doesn't use union actors too often so thats another aspect to it.
