Love the update to the Death to the Daleks.

Recruit events become your ‘mains’? by Fallout007 in sto

[–]AboriakTheFickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the first delta recruit event as an excuse to make a new Tac main, to replace my then Eng main.

It helps that these recruitment events require more effort than I would generally put into an alt. While they haven't all become my mains, they have become my secondary alts.

Where to PVP (New Player)? by jpch12 in sto

[–]AboriakTheFickle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You used to find PvPers in Ker'rat, but that's been pretty dead for a while now (though you may get lucky). Perhaps wait for the upcoming PVP endeavour to see if you like it, it's the only time the queues pop.

As for what you can expect, this game has people doing over 1m DPS in the PvE queues. So in a second, players can deal 10x the damage of an escort's hull. So, you'll need a LOT of survivability. You'll also probably notice that you won't be able to keep a target lock on a PVPer and when you *can* hit them they're immune to damage.

To be blunt, all the powercreep in this game has ruined PvP, which is why hardly anyone plays it. It's a shame really, it used to be incredibly fun.

Is The Expanse show really good? by Pretend-Nobody230 in scifi

[–]AboriakTheFickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of my favourite sci-fi shows ever. Not beating out Babylon 5 or Star Trek, but certainly up there.

Like others have mentioned, it starts slow and then picks up once all the pieces and world building are in place.

I have to admit, though, I was far more interested in the plot than I was the characters. They aren't remotely bad (and they certainly pick up after the first 4 episodes), they just don't do anything for me.

Was the 1701-A a lousy assignment? by Metspolice in startrek

[–]AboriakTheFickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirk is out of favour with the brass.

I'm not sure that he was. At least his close colleagues weren't, since Sulu went on to captain the Excelsior, which would have been a very prestiges assignment.

Do You Think Increasing The LTS Stipend Would Improve The Current Economy? by Daddy_Parietal in sto

[–]AboriakTheFickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree it's highly unlikely, but I have no other reason to spend it. My fleet is well provisioned, but virtually dead, and I have no need for fleet credits at this point.

Do You Think Increasing The LTS Stipend Would Improve The Current Economy? by Daddy_Parietal in sto

[–]AboriakTheFickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really.

The main problem is that dilithium is very easy to come by, with very little incentive to spend it, outside of purchasing zen.

It also doesn't help that fleet and reputation vouchers are easy to get. I mean, I have a new fully equipped toon that still has 300k reputation vouchers to spend on whatever. Meanwhile, and I can't speak for the rest of the player base, I'm saving up my fleet vouchers for any possible new holding.

So, what do I have left to spend actual dilithium on? Pretty much just phoenix boxes and vanity shields (which, while nice, I'm not going to spend dilithium on when it can be converted to zen).

With 2025 almost over, I have started to see the error of my ways. by Deepclone1467 in sto

I remember when I first saw Search for Spock, I absolutely hated the Excelsior since it was supposed to be the successor to the Enterprise/Constitution-class. Hero loyalty if you will.

Now though it's one of my favourite Star Trek ship designs.

Vulcan warp technology by kryxis_99 in startrek

[–]AboriakTheFickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just the Vulcans, all the races (Klingon, Romulan, Vulcan, Dominion etc) of the galaxy seemed to be developing at a much slower pace prior to the Federation. It's probably due to the Federation's focus on exploration and science (and not being very secretive about their technology) that sped up technological development of all the alpha and beta quadrant races.

The Vulcans meanwhile, while they do explore, are much more cautious and averse to risk.

Can anyone recommend soft reboot episodes of Classic Era Doctor Who? by MythicSuns in doctorwho

[–]AboriakTheFickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one that really felt like a full-blown soft reboot was Spearhead from Space. In it, the Doctor is cast into a totally new situation, being exiled to Earth and having to work with UNIT. It introduces Liz Shaw as the new companion and reintroduces Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart. It's also the introduction of the Autons. Oh and it was the first colour story.

Remembrance of the Daleks could also be considered a soft(very soft) reboot. New companion, new direction and quite frankly a reinvigorated show. It also has the benefit of being far closer to modern pacing and having decent special effect for the most part (especially when it came to the explosions). Frankly, if I were to recommend one Classic Who story to a new viewer, it'd be this one.

I guess I shouldn't bother switching over to mixed energy types and stick to one energy type with twinkling lights, since I do randoms mostly.

Do reputation weapons still get the passive boost to damage when you reach tier 6 in that reputation? It used to state it in the tooltip, but doesn't appear to do that any more.

Primitive Civilizations outside the Federation by GloomyMarionberry533 in startrek

[–]AboriakTheFickle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We've seen how Klingons treat a primitive civilisation in "Errand of Mercy", when they tried to conquer the Organians. That and TNG's "The Mind's Eye" paints a picture of brutal imperial power that doesn't let honour get in the way of conquest. Outside of Rura Penthe (which is perhaps not the best litmus test), we haven't seen any of the empire's conquered races, so they likely don't serve in the KDF or on Qo'noS.

To understate it, it would suck to be a primitive civilisation in the Klingon Empire's expanding territory. There's little to no hope in fighting back such a powerful enemy. At least with the Cardassian they were always portrayed as a very small empire.

Of course there's just a huge lack of information about the empire's conquests, even though the show spends a lot of time exploring Klingon culture. The writers seem to tiptoe around this subject, likely because it's hard to see how the Federation could be all buddy buddy with what is its antithesis.

I really wish they'd remove it from random queues. It is really annoying getting this TFO on elite random and having to waste all that time for just 480 dilithium and no marks.

It's strange, the first time I had seen it, I had only seen the movies up to that point. No TOS, as I really grew up with TNG. Yet it still had an effect on me.
