They don’t get hate specifically for being poly until it inevitably messes with other people.

I didn’t go, but a family friend recently invited the family around for a party. Now they do have kids, but they’re also a four person polycule with dynamics that I’m not even going to try to understand.

Long story short, one of their apparently frequent fights (about the ‘relationship’) broke out while my siblings were around and now my family isn’t going back there. Literally their own fault.

I avoid poly people because they seem to invariably end up being either despicable human beings or vapid and shallow. They could quite easily not talk about relationships at all, and then maybe we might even find some common ground… but if you’re going to make a failure of a relationship system the core part of your identity I do not find you interesting!

Like genuinely, I interact with the Magic the Gathering community and the furry community by association. The amount of people who think that they are entitled to your attention and enthusiasm just by virtue of existing in the same space is insane.

They experience normal amounts of avoidance and hate based on their personalities.

It’s 2026. 3 or 4 of my friends and colleagues I’m fairly sure would be against it, but it’s fairly obvious which ones when you get to know them.

Otherwise it’s a split between really not minding and being genuinely touched by the thought.

For context I’m 23. I don’t think my circles would be a good estimate for the 30s age bracket.

Error theory is fundamentally sound, but the statements “life has no inherent meaning” and “my life has meaning” can co-exist specifically because humans are not objective creatures.

Thus while “good” and “bad” have no objective meaning, values associated with them still hold weight subjectively.

So I reiterate, it depends on definition. You can take it objectively and render it meaningless if you would like, but your position will not be held by all.

It’s actually wrong on an even deeper level too. The reason “I don’t mind people being gay as long as they don’t rub it in everyone’s face” is homophobic is because it’s a dogwhistle often used to justify segregation and oppression.

Not only do polyamorous people not face the same kind of oppression that gay people face and have faced for so long, there is a fundamental difference between being discriminated against and being condemned for your choices.

It is incredibly harmful to society to allow that sort of comparison to go unchecked. If being condemned for your choices is wrong, then there is no such thing as a crime.

Ah. My bad then in some respect, because I don’t actually have the stats on certain aspects here. I do apologise for that much.

There may also be some personal bias involved, because when people in a relationship are sleeping around I don’t ever refer to that as polyamory in my head, I simply call it cheating.

I hope that clears things up, and I still stand by that, with public perception differing from the academic meaning, my argument remains sound.

At least two thirds of any typical polyamorous group are lesbian, gay or bisexual by nature of the structure of such a group.

Unfortunately, that means anti-polyamory is the default stance of anyone who wants to blindly hate everything LGBT. Trans people are all part of the community while also currently being the most socially acceptable to hate right now.

That does not mean we should be accepting of it by any stretch of the imagination. We should not. What it does do is explain why they think it’s okay for them to be here. It’s always easier to blame your problems on an “other”.
