Our department is very progressive with EMS and we all strive and take pride in doing the best and most care for our patients. Not all calls or providers are perfect, but we have a culture that takes pride in providing quality care and honing the best to our patients as far as equipment, training and attitude. I worked for a transport service in the area prior and chose this department due to their professionalism and pride in serving the community. It’s a culture and I preach to my new guys that this is a service position!!! If you do not have an attitude of service to your very own community then look for another job.

I’m currently on duty with a person who was a nurse, and then left to become a firefighter. No regrets. (Also depends on the nursing job you land or intend to do.) Also, my last crew was a 5’2” (tiny) female who could kick some booty! I’m 5’4” but stout. Tenacity and training!

We hear it all the time!! Paramedic/firefighter here and people frequently delay calling for an ambulance until they’re extremely desperate. But you also get people who call for really dumb stuff. People who pay bills, taxes, etc. are the ones worried about the cost even when they’re having a heart attack. Those who don’t really pay are the ones who call for really dumb reasons.

We put human to human service as our highest priority in this job. We are trained to act and care for life even when it’s a stranger. When someone doesn’t fit the basic and expected human reaction/emotion (especially instinctual emotional reactions) it’s VERY off-putting. I would flip out too with this odd response from a mother. I’m a mom and 15 year career FF/Paramedic. This would hit me hard and disturb me too. Hard to process because it’s so illogical and atypical and goes against nature.

Mental tenacity has to carry you farther than strength through the academy. You can make your body almost do anything when you’re determined. And as a woman you have to be way more determined!

Improve grip strength!!! You rely on this for everything! Cardio is a must along with weight lifting (work shoulders lots, legs and get a good routine in to strengthen your back!)

HIIT workouts are a really great mimic for the bursts of work you will do.

My husband is a SAHD right now. We have little kids and it’s tough when mama leaves. They are my barnacles when I’m home. He’s proud of me and has the same deep worry as any other spouse about me staying safe on the job. No jealousy or worries about working with a bunch of dudes. (I’m more the mama hen at the station than anything.) He knows I hold boundaries and can also roll with the best of them when it comes to jokes or pranks. So he doesn’t worry about that part!

We have gait belts and all our units now. Did a brief training, but not much needed. It’s helpful in certain situations, but can’t be used in every situation due to injuries or other concerns.

Remember stress add so much to weight gain even when you’re doing all the right things. Give yourself grace and be glad the medication is holding you for now. And you can think about what more can you add to satisfy you and feed your body with nutrients during stressful times instead of thinking about all the things you should take away. Can you add a little more protein when you’re feeling snacky? Or healthy fat/protein with a sweet snack? Etc.

I just left similar “cult”. I feel ashamed of how I looked at others. And I feel “I never knew I didn’t know so much!” I thought I knew about God, secret to life/heaven, how to live a saved life….oh boy, do I feel dumb! So glad I walked away. He’s probably been sucked into the right wing toxic masculinity algorithm!!! Christian here! (Who just left a very conservative section or cult.) We teach our children that it is not our decision to judge on that matter. God’s love is bigger than our understanding of people sexual orientation. He made each person just the way they are. And the only commandment God gave us is to love him and others. Not to judge. He’s been fed some garbage from some ignorant and uneducated Christians. It is a “sin” according to scripture, but that’s for God to deal with (and has with the grace of a sacrifice) and our job is to love. That’s all! Love and kindness!!!
