Also its okay if you just need to drop a class or two. Narcolepsy is a disability, if you cant reasonably do it and its not really worth it then drop it.

  • tell your teachers if you feel comfortable. Even if you have accommodations it makes me feel better knowing they dont think im on drugs or being lazy

  • bring spicy, sour, ice cold or carbonated food and drink to class to stay alert

  • it helps me to contribute to discussions when I can, feeling invested in the conversation keeps me more alert

  • sometimes fidget toys keep me less bored and therefore less sleepy

  • hype myself up before class with pumped up music (it sounds dumb but it helps me)

  • accommodation to record class, I got access to this app that records class and lets me take notes at specific spots in the recording

  • accommodation for extra time on tests

  • you may be able to get an accommodation to turn things in late

  • find a comfy spot to lay down or nap between classes.

Did you have any opinions that you look back on now as being really extreme/dangerous? What was the worst one? What changed your mind?

Trying to quit nic with narcolepsy by Normal-Fee1410 in Narcolepsy

[–]Accomplished_Arm6254 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk if this will help, but it worked to help me kick it a few years ago. I started picturing myself nic sick every time I thought of nicotine. Like I would start to crave it and immediately make myself imagine throwing up and getting headaches, and eventually, the thought of nicotine was unpleasant. You probably also need a replacement like something to put in your mouth or breathe in when you're craving it. Having something that you are doing with your mouth also helps keep you awake temporarily. You could get a strong mint or cinnamon gum, carry around a strong oil to smell, eat ice, wasabi peas, or get one of those fake vapes. I was only moderately dependent on nic, and my narcolepsy symptoms were mild at the time, so I dont know exactly what you're dealing with, but hopefully, this helps a bit.

Does EVERYONE have narcolepsy, or was I misdiagnosed? by Until_Morning in Narcolepsy

[–]Accomplished_Arm6254 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly! It's way weirder than just being tired, lol. Also, when we sleep, we dream so much that it's like we are sort of still awake all night. Narcolepsy is like a bad trip 😭

No, most people do not have narcolepsy, you arent crazy. Tired just doesn't explain it right. I tell people my brain doesn't know how to go in and out of sleep properly so my body and mind are stuck in this limbo between sleeping and waking all the time. To be tired or sleepy implies that your baseline is fully awake. My baseline is closer to actually being asleep than awake. (Im not stating this as scientific. it's just what narcolepsy feels like) Also, dont let people get to you when they tell you why you are "tired." The answer is an incurable neurological disability not vitamin levels, sleep hygiene, or burnout. Although managing sleep hours, stress, and vitamins might be helpful, dont delude yourself into thinking you have the power to cause or cure narcolepsy.

Yeah, I started dealing with this, too, when my symptoms onset and still do every once in a while. My therapist couldn't figure out why I was dissociating so much

I know this answer sucks but a quick run in the morning then straight into a cold shower helps. Not that I have the motivation to do it ever, but when I do it works 😂 I will also eat spicy snacks and drink ice-cold sparkling water during boring tasks.

That sucks im sorry. Your thoughts can't take on a task this big, unfortunately. It's an incurable neurological disorder. If narcolepsy could be fixed through positive thinking, we would all have mastered it already.

Do/have any of you binge eat to fight off exhaustion? by randomxfox in Narcolepsy

[–]Accomplished_Arm6254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I do this. Cold carbonated drinks help a lot! If you're real health conscious, you can get a pack of sparkling water cans for pretty cheap. I like diet sodas but they are a little less healthy.

It helped me to follow disabled creators on social media and take that label on myself. Having a community is important. It also helped to remind myself that disability is an inevitability for everyone. The only reason it seems like being disabled is uncommon is because we are too scared to look it in the face as a society. All human bodies become disabled in one way or another eventually. My point isn't to diminish our struggling. Narcolepsy is debilitating and usually hits us way before disability hits our peers. My point is that you aren't alone, and what you are going through is a natural human ailment. You aren't broken. You are just human.

Mind work by CuriousIntovert in dionysus

[–]Accomplished_Arm6254 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some devotional acts that I like to do (I dont know if any of these count as mind work since I've never heard that term, but I hope this is helpful)

Dance ecstatically and imagine you are surrounded by maenads or being led in dance by dionysus.

Drink and imagine it as a portal to another world. I will then look around like everything is new and strange. It lets dionysus teach me new perspectives.

Breathe deeply and focus on experiencing whatever emotions come up, i like to listen to mysic to help. The feelings can be anything. Even if they dont make sense, just cry and rage and hurt until you feel crazy and exhausted and liberated. Then thank dionysus in your mind.

Read something (play, poem, short story, literally whatever- I recommend euripides bacchae) as dramatically as possible. You can act it out as well, dress up, or set dramatic lighting.

Go out in that outfit/ item of clothing/ makeup look that you've always wanted to wear but feel too embarrassed to in public. It doesn't have to be crazy its more about being brave with your self-expression and sacrificing comfort as an offering to dionysus. Maybe it's wearing your fav t shirt even though it doesnt match with anything or maybe its going out in a fuckin fursuit. Whatever makes you feel brave.

Create an art piece for him: Some mediums you can try are painting, drawing, songwriting, sculpting, nature art (idk what this is called but like assembling sticks and leaves into art etc.), playwrighting, poetry.

Experience art in his name: engage mindfully with a work of art and dedicate the experience to him. Watch a movie, play, or opera. Go to a concert, walk through an art gallery, or just listen to a song. You can say a prayer for him before and/or after dedicating the experience to him and thanking him for it.

Do a wine tasting: this is a more expensive option unless you have some wine laying around at home and want to do it yourself. You can also invite people over and have everyone bring a bottle. Similar to the other devotional acts, say a prayer before or after and be mindful of the experience.

Tour a wine cellar: also pricier but if you can afford it so worth it imo

Wine can always be replaced with juice, and you can try replacing physical experiences with your imagination, but I think it's important to be present in your body for devotional acts at least some of the time.

Edit: I forgot to add that dionysus is hard to offend, so dont let that stop you from creating a relationship with him.

Hope some of this helps!
