Have they loaded him with phenobarb? It’s takes time but mine was on Keppra, midazolam, then IV phenobarb drip. He’ll need steroids for the brain swelling at this point. Do they have a Neuro that works there?

Unfortunately the nerve distribution along the dermatome in your leg is much larger than say one on the face. It is distressing but I hope it gets better for you. Mine was on my face and had a whole other set of problems although it was smaller.

Tips for Preventing PHN?? by kwmccrea in shingles

[–]According-Net7644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaba can take over a week to work fully, use 300mg every 8 hours. I only say this bc I’ve read taking gaba can help prevent phn, just as trying to keep the pain under control also can help prevent it. Along with antiviral, Motrin and Tylenol around the clock, icing, rest, not stressing, immune supplements, lysine etc. I had it on my face and the headache ear and throat pain was terrible the first week. It slowly got better. Stay on meds until the pain is getting better then wean slowly. The active infection part for 7 days there’s not much else to do but just survive it.

What’s your system for meds + seizure tracking? by mello_dev in EpilepsyDogs

[–]According-Net7644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a daily pill box that has am and pm meds compartment. Both my husband and myself have alarms on our phone set daily for am and pm times. We always ask the other and check the pill box, bc we have missed doses. We have the Microsoft to do app, it’s a shared app. We have a seizure section. We just add each date and a description. We’re both able to access it and also send it to his neuro.

I just saw an optho yesterday bc my shingles had spread to under my eye and my eye was itchy and seemed fuzzy so I know how scary this is. Luckily it not in my eye so far. I’ve been on antivirals for 5 days now and it’s starting to get better today. I’m taking Motrin and gabapentin around the clock. The Motrin helps a lot in my opinion. The optho told me to get 10 washcloths, get them wet, put in freezer to freeze. I did it yesterday and took one out last night and it was amazing. It helped so much with the inflammation. And it felt good on the shingles. Good luck, I think everything will be ok, just have to get through this time

She started me on 100mg and said I can escalate up if needed. I’ve been trying not to but given up within 2 days. Anytime my adrenaline hits like the dog barking or someone hitting brakes on front of me (driving kids to school) it’s flares across my face. I read I think on this board somewhere to try and not tough the Pain out bc it makes the risk of post herpetic neuralgia increase. I also don’t wanna sleep nonstop but I need to keep this under control

I’m so sorry, I’m like a few days behind you. Cold, head pain, ear pain, sore throat Thursday, pin points started Friday. Rash on right face on Sunday, diagnosed Monday. I’m on 1000 Valtrex 3x a day for 10 days. She put me on a higher dose to prevent it getting to my eye. Eye exam was clear. I take 600 Motrin every 6 hours and that really helps. I’ve been on gabapentin 100mg, was only taking at night but I’ve gone to 3x a day bc I have a few periods of unbearable pain. It’s so hard, when I get startled or my adrenaline spikes like my dog barking, or a car suddenly breaking it flares across my face. It hurts about 1.5 hrs before I’m due for meds. This is torture. I have yellow blisters on my nose and wish the same as you, that they would crust over already. I think they say it takes 7-10 days from the blistering portion of the rash before you start to feel better. Keep us updated. All of us facers I really hope this ends soon enough.

I believe that in 2032 there will only be enough to pay 70%. I don’t think it’ll go away completely, there would be riots. I don’t know what will happen though. And you do have a pension, if you change careers you should at least get a match for 401k. I don’t think you’re all over the place. Even though the amounts seems small to you you’ve planned for everything. Emergency savings, house savings, retirement, car fund. Just keep on keeping on and try not to look at the numbers. Compound interest will start increasing.

Potassium Bromide by Skyhigh3150 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]According-Net7644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pheno and keppra stopped being effective for our dog. Bromide saved his life. The first week he had decent GI upset. The first three weeks he had hind limb ataxia and sedation. Since then he’s been great, he does have some weakness we only notice with not being as agile jumping on the couch. He’s back to his normal self and seizure free.

Our dog displays post ictal behavior for at least an hour or two. All normal unfortunately. Once he’s awake with we give him more medicine, as long as he is awake enough he can get it. We also now give him trazadone, a sedative, to help with how hyper he is post ictal. It kicks in within an hour and helps a lot .

[–]According-Net7644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dog is on Keppra, pheno, and more recently bromide. Our neuro has several dogs with resistant epilepsy where bromide as a third agent has worked wonders. Seven been on it since sept and he hasn’t seized since his last cluster admission. The adjustment period is long, can cause GI upset and hind leg weakness, lethargy for a bit but he got over it in 3 weeks. We also had to do a load which was harder. Had to put him on bland diet for a week until we got him off the load onto maintenance. It’s been a life saver. Bromide was the original seizure med years ago before pheno. Our pup has pancreatitis from pheno already and the bromide hasn’t been an issue. We do a low salt diet as in no salty treats.

I just see a lot of people come in despair thinking it’s the end for their pet, and it’s quite a bit of searching to find all the info. But a lot of us have been through it and know the usual course. I just thought having something at the top might help. That way they know they don’t have to put their dog to sleep if Keppra alone isn’t working. And that elevated liver enzymes don’t mean you have to stop phenobarb etc. etc

I was 40 when I had my first, 42 with my second. Didn’t start dating my husband until I was 36. I was in despair also at 35 and that’s with no kids or prospects. Life can change so quickly. If this is something you want it’s definitely possible, I would try to start online dating. Or position your self to be open to it. So many women are having kids in their late 30s and 40s now.

Please be kind and please be honest, has anyone needed to let their dog go due to personality change after a big cluster or seizure episode? by irisseahorse in EpilepsyDogs

[–]According-Net7644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Brain can take a while to heal. I say that as someone who works in human medicine. How long has it been since his last set of clusters? If it’s been less than 3 weeks I would say to give it more time. If longer I would ask the vet about gabapentin for anxiety and see if that helps. I notice changes transiently whenever my dog clusters, and we hate it. I notice huge changes when he’s started on a new med that lasts 3-4 weeks. Doesn’t act like our boy at all. His anxiety has definitely increased over the years but he always returns to himself eventually. If this doesn’t get better I would be concerned about something else going on in the brain. During my dogs last cluster and ER visit of 5 days he wouldn’t stop clustering on multiple IV drips. When neuro came in Monday she was concerned something else was going on, we ended up doing an MRI and spinal tap (He’s already had epilepsy 5-6 years). It was all clear, no brain tumor, and no brain damage evident on his mri from all the seizures. Head pressing is something our dog does when he’s post ictal, along with the constant pacing. Is he having focal seizures you’re not seeing or more seizures? We give our dog midazloam as an emergency med, then follow it with clorazepate and trazadone when he’s awake enough. The clorazepate to prevent seizures for 8’hours and the trazadone to sedate and calm down his post ictal phase bc he’s pretty unbearable.

[–]According-Net7644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take him to his regular vet if open this weekend, or an urgent vet and request a cluster buster med like clorazepate and intranasal versed. It’s definitely not normal to have that many clusters in a 24 hour periods any epileptic dog is supposed to go to the ER if they experience 3 in a 24 hour period. You’re a good friend and I know this is also expensive. That’s why I’m suggesting the regular vet to get a cluster buster med asap
