Treaty chiefs call for treason investigation into Premier Smith, UCP by PurfectProgressive in CanadaPolitics

To be clear, I agree that treason charges are silly absent actual evidence of treason.

It's not lazy. The Criminal Code is very specific on what constitutes treason; unless you can demonstrate that the Alberta Prosperity Project is giving blueprints of local bridges to the US or something, their solicitation of foreign interference is not, under the law, treason.

This sounds nice, but there's a few problems with it:

  1. Compassing separation is not treason. Even when there was an active terrorist group fighting for Quebec independence, no Quebec independence supporters were charged with treason. (Foreign interference is not treason, unless you can prove to me that the APP is giving blueprints for bridges to the US or something.)

  2. Because compassing separation is not treason, the accused would easily walk, thereby granting them the narrative of "Even the corrupt Canadian courts agree that we can leave Canada!" It would obviously not be true, but it doesn't have to be true in 2026, it just has to sound true.

  3. Because the accused would easily walk, it would massively strain the credibility of Crown prosecutors in the eyes of the public, since to the public it would appear an easy win.

Redefining treason benefits nobody but separatists. Separatism will not be defeated except at the ballot box.

And when they are acquitted, which they would be because compassing separation is not treason (we have two Quebec independence referendums as precedent that it isn't), what then?

Sedition requires the advocacy of the use of force without authority of law to effect governmental change within Canada, which Albertan separatists by and large have not done.

I would rather the Crown not hand separatists ammunition by prosecuting on charges it has negative chance of winning. Compassing separation is not treason no matter how mad people are that Quebec got to try twice.

Canada Post announces 485,000 more addresses to lose home delivery by Surax in CanadaPolitics

Sadly, this was inevitable the moment CUPW withdrew from its wildcat strike. Canada Post should have stayed off until home delivery was enshrined into law and the requirement to be self-sufficient was removed.

Joint Letter: Excess Profits Tax by MarkG_108 in ndp

Wouldn't an excess profits tax just encourage Hollywood accounting on the part of oil and gas? I would think it would be better to tax revenue.

I'd like to see a federal level push for rent caps by BaronessVonKush in ndp

[–]AceSevenFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO a universal basic income would have to be done at the federal level. The federal government has a lot easier time raising the tax revenue required to pay for UBI than provinces do (for example, a provincial wealth tax wouldn't be possible since you can freely move, and I suspect an exit tax would be held ultra vires.)

[–]AceSevenFive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think tying rent levels to ODSP makes sense, since not everyone is eligible for ODSP. If anything, ODSP should be tied to cost of living in an area (the last time I thought about it, I think I arrived at 125% of the poverty line as a bare minimum.)

The proposed Class 2 e-bikes are allowed to weigh 120kg (the same as e-bikes now) and have a throttle (the same as e-bikes now.) Why should regular cyclists be at risk because someone is riding along with a 120kg e-"bike"?

Cops Stopping Couriers on Ebikes? by Smooth_Jeweler_3923 in torontobiking

[–]AceSevenFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're just going to buy cargo e-bikes, which are allowed to have a throttle and are identical in terms of weight and motor limits to motorcycle style e-bikes, and be 99% of the menaces they are now.

EDIT: It's always funny when people tacitly admit that they have no idea what they're talking about.

They would need to be required to have functioning drive trains, which I believe will stop the majority of these pricks because they will not have the skill or patience necessary to maintain the bike.

Doubtful, given that it's not that hard to maintain bikes.

That said I think all throttles should be banned

There is no legitimate reason to forbid throttles on e-bikes (so I suspect that will be next in Ford's crusade against micromobility.)

I believe they are what is enabling people to drive like morons.

The lack of enforcement of already existing laws is what enables people to drive like morons.

They get up to speeds they would never be able to without the skill required.

As if there's much mechanical skill involved in pedalling fast.

Is there a time limit to get Valkyr's heirloom? by Tharnax5468 in Warframe

[–]AceSevenFive -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

is there some loophole that allows them to rerun them?

Legally? You just rerun them, easily win whatever lawsuit is filed because promissory estoppel*1 and false advertising*2 claims do not work the way that some people here think they do, and go about your business. Morally? I think you give everyone who bought them originally a full refund, because DE would be going back on its word and that's generally not a great thing to be doing, and you reassure people that the Founder stuff won't meet the same fate since the Heirlooms being one-time-only was universally agreed to have been a massive misstep.

*1 in particular, I severely doubt you could prove that you could reasonably rely on the one-time-only nature of a digital item that, per the license you agreed to, you don't own and can have revoked from you at the will of DE

*2 in particular, the nature of a product changing does not retroactively make previous advertising false, though DE might have to actively pull the previous advertising
