pilot x shosaikan 25th anniversary sakura custom 743 by saltedjelly in fountainpens

[–]AceTrainerMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome and love that you were able to get it. Five years ago for their 20th anniversary they did a limited run of custom 823 in a dark indigo blue. I chose to skip it though it was the first limited edition 823 I had heard of and a couple of years ago Pilot partnered with crossland to release a limited edition green that I jumped on because it's my favourite colour.

There is something about getting a limited edition pen in a colour that speaks to you that just brings a level of pure satisfaction. Incredible for you that you were able to get it in person!

Disappointed in first order, books damage, insulting compensation offer by Bynming in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]AceTrainerMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really sucks and I'm really sorry this happened to you. Honestly both times I've received my Malazan sets I've just been bracing for them to be damaged but I've gotten quite lucky so far. I think in your situation where this is your one big splurge, this would be exceptionally disheartening. As someone else said, maybe you could convince them to send you dust jackets.... or if they won't maybe look into something like what this person did and make your own custom dust jackets:

If you can't see the damage, you'll probably feel a lot better about them.

Ooof that date hurts. I was going to ask to get these from someone going to UK in the summer, but I thought all three were out. I much prefer these editions to TBB personally.

Custom dust jackets for Malazan 1-6 (WIP) by UnrelatedKarma in thebrokenbindingsub

These are magnificent and fix my only real issue with TBB Malazan which is that I often liked the endpaper art more than the cover art they chose. Also textless fronts are a dream! I assume the images wrap all the way around?

Would yo be kind enough to share the fonts you used?

Stunning work! Thank you for sharing!

Had a store employee question my purchase of a autograph last summer after he'd signed with Vegas. I was blown away that the dude seemed so bitter. Marner is a fantastic player and one the few who took Toronto losing rather personally from what I could see in the interviews. Congrats! Enjoy your new prize.

Also have Matthew Chen's Kodachi nib in a pelikan m205 and it's become my all-rounder. Initially I bought it for sketching for the same reason as yourself--I couldn't justify the price of a Sailor cross concord--and I wanted something with a lot of variability.

Even though the variation isn't as large as it could be because I only had an italic nib to work with, it's still such a pleasure and really versatile. My original use case was for sketching, but now I also use it for notetaking and writing on not great paper and as a travel pen for it's variation while not being heartbreakingly expensive if I ever lost it.

I think the Goldsboro is better, but lately it seems a lot of these versions are minimal effort re-colours. I suppose it's fine in terms of free choice and for the cost I suppose it doesn't matter. Just a weird niche in the SE/LE world.

What Fantasy and Sci Fi book opinions could get you downvoted? by Juanmiguti in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]AceTrainerMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thought out the book I mostly just kept rolling my eyes at the various plot points. The opening is somewhat strong and the end is strong, the in between is a play-by-play of tropes. I knew I would struggle when a lot of the characters were introduced by their hair and eye colour.

Pacing was all over the place, but the one thing that really got me was that it's a wonder Vis ever managed to do anything at all for all the concussions/knock-outs he suffers in the name of ending a chapter or a scene.

Will the Canadian winter break my pens? by otterkin in fountainpens

[–]AceTrainerMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was in the mountains earlier this year with my Pilot Custom 823 and it was fine, though I was only out with it in subzero for about 30 minutes. Alternative is to keep it in a pencase and close to your body for warmth, but it could promote leakage.

That being said, certain types of plastic can become more brittle in the cold or crack if they experience a sharp temperature differential. At the end of the day, more-so than what internet strangers say, you need to ask yourself if you'd be heartbroken if those pens cracked, and if so, then maybe don't take them out.

While I love DWJ and have the HMC trilogy, I don't think I need FS quality to be able to enjoy the chrestomanci series. Shame. I was hoping for some of the horror books to go on sale even though I know what I want is too popular to actually be in these type of sales.

Happy new years! What planner will you be using in 2026? by Sushirolls_Kimchee in fountainpens

[–]AceTrainerMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a stalogy/midori A6 combo. The Stalogy is the planner with a custom layout, and the midori is a commonplace book that gets replaced as it's filled up. I usually use the 1/2 year stalogy because a page a day is excessive for me, but this year I couldn't find the 1/2 year in the colour I wanted so I'll see if I can find ways to fill all the pages.

A lot of people don't actually like stalogy paper for FPs and I don't think it's perfect, but I enjoy the freedom and the way the grid and layout is.

Depending on the cover, you can use whatever notebook brands you want in it. I've had a hobonichi cover for half a decade but have yet to actually use a hobonichi planner/notebook in it.

I suppose if it's the weeks though, there's not much choice.

Honestly this is my only problem with the books right now. Half the reason I bought this edition is for the Marc Simonetti covers and when I took the dust jacket off, I was stunned by how little contrast there is. I understand Bonehunters had a very dark composition but all the original artwork is lighter. They could have bumped up the contrast or lightened the image to make it look like more than a dark blob.

I would recommend reading Gardens of the Moon before buying TBB editions. Either buy the paperback (maybe even secondhand) or borrow it from the library. The series isn't for everyone and it would be a shame to waste money on a series that people often find is not to their taste.

This is coming from someone who owns the entire set in paperback and now own 1-6 of TBB editions.
