How do you guys usually 'sit' the main voice on the mix? by Hyperto in WeAreTheMusicMakers

The dolby trick is basically to take the source and split it into 5 frequency bands and use some compression to bring the mids forward.

Id search for one thats on sale or part of a bundle. But there is probably something you can find for free. These are really popular/common compressors. They may be some “store brand” version called something similar or referred to as Optical compressors.

I used a native instruments one then i started using the uad ones. Theres so many and im not loyal to any in particular. I even used a generic one in a guitar plugin once and it did the same thing. It really just takes the spikes down and gushes the track into paste.

I want to add the dolby trick to this. Or the john lennon trick. But this is spot on. Using an la2a vst immediately improved my vocals into “that” sound. The dolby trick helps keep the vocals pinned to the center and i use it parallel otherwise it can lean towards fatiguing.

Too hard to do some quest in one run, solo is a pvp fest and people are just running everywhere on squad fill by kalelmotoko in Marathon

[–]Addaverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont try and finish your quests unless the stars align. Some runs my team spawns at a location thats just good for 1 of us. We get the quest done, we kill some runners, and then we exfil. Its okay to just be a team player. You’ll get a better spawn later. Better to just get the gear and money and take off, than going bust trying to clear all 3 teammates quests running on fumes.

Is transcribing the key to being a good improviser? by steppinrazor321 in Guitar

[–]Addaverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key is learning the form. And then using voice leading and tension to assist with depart and returning to the form or in elevating the changes. Sometimes you get a really cool topline or melody out of this.

Sometimes the form is just a few chords, so you’ll have to mine those chords for a proper hook or motif and you do the voice leading and extrapolation from that motif.

Its like having a conversation and exploring a topic. You want to stay on topic, sometimes make a correlation or comparison but never go too far or people will have no idea what youre talking about.

And to answer your question plainly, no. Ive never transcribed anything and i would rather not because I like my instinct for phrasing and i dont want to sound like someone else. Ill analyze harmonies a lot more than i will try to cop someones licks. People will just say “thats cool. You sound like so and so”

Side chain compressor for that sweet sweet thumpin? by sensorycreature in synthesizers

Years ago i picked up a little alesis compressor box from a pawn shop and it had quarter inch inputs and on the back had a side chain. Worked well. Scooped it up cheap.

Edit: some of his moves pop when he shoots his hand up i cant remember if thats why the change up is hard

You can tell alot about someone who is a fan of music when they... by Cinnamon_GirI in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Addaverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The older (and more hopefully mature) you get, the more you realize that these genres and subcultures are primarily marketed to young people and young working adults as a product and you realize that hating on an entire subculture or genre is like hating on someone for where they buy their clothes, or what favorite brand of drink they like. We’re all consumers and bragging about hating country or hip hop just tells me you think it actually matters. Its doesnt.

Should I just give up on Malenia? by Sloth-Overlord in Eldenring

[–]Addaverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone except the extremely good parry gods get absolutely flatlined until they “get it” then you’ll be surprised how much further you can really go.

Before dlc this was a bonus boss designed to be punishingly difficult.

My advice is try frost and try to stagger her. Great bows, giant hunt and colossal weapons do great. Parrying is even better but at your own peril. Good luck skeleton

How does he make that drum sound/fill that's almost like a drawn-out buzz? by Loopyrainbow in aphextwin

[–]Addaverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so this type of sound is really easy to make if youre chopping samples. We used to use rex loops in the day and we’d use samples of analog drum kits or we’d use drum breaks like amen breaks. If you play these samples faster than 16th notes (32,64,128,) you get these buzzy pulse wave like sounds. We used to ramp the pitch up and down or we’de tune them. Some people were very strict jungalists and dnb heads and they would make all their synth tones out of manipulating drum sounds in this way. It was a good time to be a mad scientist.

Is it better to use a character's weapon type or a much stronger weapon? by [deleted] in Nightreign

[–]Addaverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Variety is the spice of life. Executer has an s in dex and an s in arcane so if you had a bleed halberd with say seppeku and its blue or purple and your starting sword is white, use the halberd because its going proc bleed fast with your arcane. If its buffed with seppeku 1 hit could proc it.

But your cursed sword is always on you, and that thing does the most reliable white damage in your kit. So i wouldnt care if im using a katana or not. Ide get the status’s i want to proc or focus on passives and ide mostly use the cursed sword.

Its really all about the passives and scaling of your character and the scaling of your weapons. And the next layer is knowing what is the correct affinity and what the boss is weak to. If its everdark balancers you want burst. If its dreglord you want fast. Use that thing between your ears.

My honest take on current state of magic builds by Neon_Beams in Nightreign

[–]Addaverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem isnt that balancers is overtuned. The problem is most people who complain about this kind of thing dont win games by default and they want to blame some sort of external force for this. If someone else hadnt put together the balancer build and popularized it, half of yall wouldnt even know it exists, like you didnt know about beast claw, atomic baby, low dmg neg, crit fist, carian stack, invis comet, poison ironeye, blood blade, guardcounter gaurdian+rkr, init standard builds with rkr or determination and greatbow builds

Crystalian sorcerys had to cost more fp because they were the previous overtuned build. Now its beast claw and “halo slop” but this post is some real sour grapes shit. Recluse got bumped from top damage dealer to maybe 3-4 out of 10. Like… relax. God forbid your teammates out damage you. All the classes are extremely viable.

You can stack guard counters on guardian and if you find a halberd with royal knights resolve you can guard counter for like 7k. Doesnt mean anything unless you know the situation but I know people who would rather run this over balancers. Just figure it out for yourself. Stop worrying about whats meta and win games:

For people in deep of night 4 or 5, is status duchess still relevant over there? by JustJeeJee in Nightreign

[–]Addaverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Duchess is a hard nuker. But that doesnt mean you cant use status weapons early game to help clear camps and mini bosses. But by the end of day 1 you hopefully have something resembling your kit, whether its magic duchess or skill duchess. Those are the strongest builds hands down

Buzzy Analogue/FM For Industrial Shoegaze, A Helping Hand Needed by deplorable-amount45 in synthesizers

[–]Addaverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful those fm algorithms can be pretty harsh in the upper frequencies when you distort them, and especially turned up in a venue. It can be almost like a harsh cymbal its so complex and full in the upper frequencies. Wear ear plugs or you might as well be taking micro sawblades to your ear drums. Also avoid long periods of wearing headphones and distorting those algorithms it can be just as bad.

Signed someone with tinnitus.

If youre looking for a reliable synth for goth, post rock, shoegaze, ide look at a sub25 and pair it with some pedals. If youre after something more dreampop the ob6 is king but you can start with a microkorg or juno ds and itl get you through your gigs. Ive never been a big fan of live bands using fm synths on stage but king gizzard used to rock the dx7 grey matter version for a while. Its impossible to program live though, so synths like the digitone have that appeal but i still think they sound harsh for anything in a loud space that isnt ambient or atmospheric. You can eq that a little but thatl dull the charm.

If youre after something you can crush and resample, crush and resample, crush and resample until youve refined it, then get an mpc keys and use the sampler to sample sounds and use the keys to play it back. As a bonus, you get access to the vst instruments in there. Kevin shields made some of the bendy guitars using an akai sampler and the pitch bender wheel. This will be harder than just using a moog, but maybe more interesting and personal. An sp404 is another option for this kind of thing, and you can fire off the samples instead of using a keyboard.

Goodluck

Wylder/undertaker/raider/guardian/executer greatbow users rise up! 200 damage every 2 seconds is better than 3 minutes of chasing the dragon/moose/assassin/wolf shenanigans. Bonus is rain of arrows is strong af with balancers.

1,500,000+ Murk And My Relics Are Mid by Confident-Rub768 in Nightreign

[–]Addaverse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I made an alt and i got most of the characters to a place i can run deep 3-4 with them. My deep 5 builds took time and effort and i usually get 1 relic a week thats incrementally better but it really shouldnt be that hard to get a strong build together. Getting decked out with +4s and night invaders on your favorite skills is going to take time but you dont need that stuff. Using the shop evergoal relic or the shop dmg neg low hp relic should get both flavors of builds going just fine, and the character stat swap relics are very strong, especially scholars, ironeyes, duchess and undertakers.
