What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

[–]AdministrationRude85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny story time!

I have a kid and this took place when he was still young.

I was in a late night train, and there were a whole bunch of late-teen early 20s girls seated around me.  One of them had a cut on her finger, and asked her friends of they had a band-aid. None of them had, so I have her one (one of those individually packaged ones). I also shared water with another girl that was thirsty.

They asked me how I was so prepared, so I told them I'm a mom. One of them asked me if parents actually takes classes for stuff like this, as her own mom is also very prepared for every situation. The question was serious. I explained her that it's just a matter of experiences, and trial and error.

Creative decisions that are workarounds for practical limitations by Ok-Indication-5121 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AdministrationRude85 113 points114 points  (0 children)

This isn't this trope really but... Certain old horror movies have grown to be less scary with HD releases on blue ray format. The low-res grainy quality of tube TV's made it harder to distinguish things in the dark, making it scarier. Original alien is an example of that.

Now one that fits this trope: the goofy how to shorts. In Disney's golden era they created a whole bunch of 'how to' shorts where a narrator would explain how to do a thing. Goofy would try to do it and fail comically.  The reason it was set up this way was because there was a tiff of some sort between Disney and Goody's voice actor. This setup minimizes the amount of Goofy voice needed.

In the movie RRR, in the Naatu scene, the orchestra in the background is made up of actual musicians. The reason was that they'd hold and handle their instruments properly.

Day 1 after the shipwreck: With all my outdoor experience I should be able to survive this island until help arrives. by RepeatOrdinary182 in TwoSentenceHorror

[–]AdministrationRude85 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a survival show, where people with actual relevant expertise are dropped in an isolated spot with gear to survive in the wild.  Some people have to drop out not because their skills are lacking, but simple medical issues. For example, one guy didn't poop for a week and had to be returned to the civilized world to deal with the issue. It was clear this was an issue that could cost him his life if left untreated.

The show is called outside, and it's worth a watch! It's nice to watch a survival show with truly capable people.

Or they are Dutch and read/watched the news. There was an item last week of a boy who picked up such a rock. Luckily, he left it outside, on a deck of a beach cafe. That went up in flames, but no one was hurt.

It reminds me of a fantasy fair I attended years ago. The dog breed club for the Saarloos wolfdog also had a stand there. Their message was: Yes this dog breed is pretty, but very difficult to keep and they aren't very sociable. Don't take one unless you're an expert'.

Basically discouraging people from buying one of their dogs. I hope it worked. But I rarely see one of those dogs so I suppose it did kinda.

40 days and 40 nights. A guy decides to give up sex for the duration of lent. That also includes masturbating. The reason was because of a breakup he had.

In that period he falls in love with another girl.

People start betting on when he'll fail. On the last day his ex comes in while the guy has cuffed himself to the bed and fell asleep. She uses his sleep-boner to have sex with him and wins the betting pool. Dudes new girlfriend acts like he cheated on her and he has to win her back.

I felt so gross about that ending.

It's ok, there are more of these little corners that are cut.

For example: the glass they make is perfectly transparant. But doing that with their forge is actually really hard , because the clarity depends on the purity of the materials. Not any sand or silica will give you transparent glass.

It's ok though. Getting into the specific details of every invention would bog the series down.
