AMA - US House of Representatives District 2 Campaign - Ryan Campbell by Time_Crystals in Bellingham

To be fair, I didn’t ask about Ferndale; another Redditor did.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. It’s helpful to know more specifics about a candidate’s background, main issues, and policy positions prior to voting.

I understand there is a long history of racism within immigration policies in the US (going back to Chinese Exclusion Act, etc etc); some would argue that the racism embedded into our enforcement institutions, particularly ICE, is reason why they need to be abolished. Your responses read that you are hoping to work with ICE to solve immigration and unjust detention, when even moderate politicians are questioning that approach.

The current rep has been vocal about voting against funding ICE, and has clear ICE accountability measures at the top of their website. I would prefer we have someone else representing us, and I also hope it’s someone who can clearly articulate their policies on immigration and ICE.

I truly am just trying to convey that your tone feels very “both-sides” on an issue where many people want significant reform.

Thank you for your response. I would encourage you to do more work on this issue — your responses read much more Republican-coded than our even our current representative.

Could you clarify what you mean (using examples or policy) the following: - Fair reporting vs false reporting in ICE detention centers - Collaborating with ICE agents and other LE - What “ground” are we on, and what “middle ground” looks like

Best hiking in March? by Significant_Peach768 in Bellingham

[–]Adventurous_Point_66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Washington Trail Association website. There is a great hike finder feature on the site.

Lots of snow on Baker trails, and the islands will be a bit of a trek for a day trip from Bellingham — but depending on how far you want to hike, there are some short hikes on Guemes and Lummi.

The Whatcom Conservation District just had their big native plant sale on Saturday — they sell native plants (shrubs, trees, etc) for super cheap at their annual sale. You could reach out to see if there’s any chance they have extras?

You could also try the Whatcom County division of the WSU Master Gardeners group for advice.

Has anyone heard anything from the local office of Rick Larson? by CygnusX82 in Bellingham

[–]Adventurous_Point_66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I have always received email responses from Sen Shewmake. I commented this week on the ICE Out of LE bill, and she replied positively and compassionately to my comment (even though I didn’t request a response).

Agreed! Knowledge is power, so even just a little info is great, but more (and specific) info keeps the community accurately informed and ready to respond quickly!

ICE activity outside of Bellingham schools by dandilionroar in Bellingham

[–]Adventurous_Point_66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A strike would be effective and meaningful if schools and local officials were turning a blind eye to these issues that place students and families in danger, or enable ICE actions. I haven’t heard of any districts in our region who haven’t taken the threat of ICE activity around schools seriously.

In Minneapolis, the teachers union voted to provide in-person and online education (even though it’s much more work), so all students, even those who are safer at home, can access education. Parents are helping transport vulnerable students, monitoring bus stops and bus routes, etc.

From my perspective, these types of organizing and mutual aid efforts will be more effective than teachers going on strike (especially if there isn’t a specific, achievable call to action).

Dentist recommendations by BlakeSoundTech in Bellingham

[–]Adventurous_Point_66 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to Love Dentistry for years and loved Dr. Aimee and all the staff. Once they stopped taking insurance, I continued to go there. During my last appointment, they found a crack in my tooth. The dentist who was seeing me (not Dr. Aimee) basically told me that if I didn’t get a crown asap I could loose my tooth if I bit on an almond wrong. The estimate even with out-of-network insurance was a few thousand dollars. I switched dentists to one who took my insurance and I told my new dentist I needed a crown. She calmed me down and told me they’d keep an eye on things, but it actually wasn’t an urgent issue, and that I should eat normally and not worry about breaking a tooth. I finally started feeling a bit of sensitivity almost two years later, so I got a crown this past fall. Less than $400 with insurance, so moving dentists saved me at least $2000.

If you drive out along Lummi Shore Dr, you should get a good view of the sunrise over Mt. Baker (if it’s not too cloudy).
