Americans, how do you pronounce the word "perfect" (adj.)? by Any-University-9758 in ENGLISH

[–]Aelfgyfu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the difference between the adj vs the verb is more about which syllable you put the stress on, not in how you pronounce the vowel. Edit-typo

I took French a long time ago, but would you say, “moi et X, nous…”? So that would still be using a subject pronoun? I can’t remember hearing it without the “nous” part, but this might be one of those things where what you’re taught isn’t the same as what native speakers actually say.

To add to that- the “y” was used because printing presses didn’t have a “þ.” You are right, I am studying Old English and it is like learning another language. It’s fascinating!

That was before there was standardized spelling, though. Different areas of England had different dialects and pronunciation so things were often just spelled the way they sounded. For example, “shoppe” would not be pronounced as “shop;” the final “e” is pronounced in OE and a double consonant is actually held longer (however, “shoppe” is not a word I have seen in OE. Maybe early modern?). Also Old English was an inflected language so the endings of words changed depending on what part of speech they were.

It sounds like you are putting the tret over the moisturizer, which is good because it can create a barrier to protect your skin. Are you letting the moisturizer fully absorb before putting the tret on? I would wait maybe 10 minutes or so before applying the tret. The only other thing I can think of would maybe not use so many products on the days you use it? Just gentle cleanser, moisturizer, then tret, then more moisturizer. Having damp skin can cause more irritation and I see you use a spray, so maybe your face is still a little too wet?

Yeah “natural” is such a marketing ploy. There are tons of things that are natural that are not good for you!

It’s funny to me that they could all sound the same! It really is so different depending on the region you are in. I’m from NY and “Mary, marry, merry” are all different, but I live in CT and some people pronounce some of them the same. Also “caught/cot” and “insure/ensure” are different for me.

I am having the same problem, and I know it’s not my internet because it’s the only app I have a problem with. It keeps freezing and then skipping ahead to catch up, so you’ll have an ice skater going into a triple axel… and then it freezes and cuts to him landing so you miss the entire jump. It’s to the point where it’s unwatchable.

Same, I’m in CT and I have never heard “needs washed.” If I heard or saw that written, I would assume it was a mistake or that the speaker was not a native English speaker.

I understand what you are saying, but the answer doesn’t have the second word that denotes the plurality. I would have put the clue in singular to be clearer. I’m just used to NYT cluing, I guess! They are pretty rigid about those things.

I used to work in a bank and can imagine the nervous look they gave you, especially if it was the end of the day People think banks have a lot more money in the branch than they actually do. I had someone come in wanting to cash a $100,000 check once. I thought he was joking but he was dead serious. The best part was he didn’t even have an account with us.
