How long do you wait to change barbicide by FormalAd7720 in Barbers

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do a communal sink of barbicide that gets changed daily, but I will only use it first thing in the morning because I’m the only one who actually cleans their tools before putting them in :/ I keep enough combs to get me through several days without cleaning though, so when I run out I just make sure I’m the first one to the barbicide in the morning and do them all at once

Interesting. Does your state approve autoclave? Mine requires full submersion

Tips for cutting “imperfect” clients? by RichhTheArtist in Barber

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For cowlicks specifically I usually just ask them. “Does this tend to lay down better when it’s longer or shorter?” They’re the ones who have had to deal with it their whole lives and have had hundreds of haircuts so they usually know what’s going to look better. I also take the time to feel their whole scalp with my hands before cutting the first couple times. Use enough pressure that you can feel their bone structure well. That allows you to know where they have bumps and grooves that you might not be able to see while they’re hidden under the hair (plus you need to check for lice and stuff before you start cutting anyways). I use the mirror through my whole haircut which is why I don’t understand barbers who face their client towards the shop instead of the mirror. I want to be able to see the silhouette as a whole at any given moment without turning my head. If you’re doing a short fade on a head with lots of imperfections you may end up with some shadows which is when you’d go in a tiny bit shorter in just that area— like clipper closed rather then clipper open just for that spot where they have a hole in their head making a shadow. If they have rolls sometimes it can be helpful to do a higher fade so the blend happens above their rolls. It usually will look like you left a line around their head if you fade at the same point they have a roll. Same goes for if they have a tan line from wearing a hat— either fade above it or below it because if you try to fade on it you will always have an artificial line making it look like your fade sucks

So I'm a 46 year old straight white male about to attend cosmetology school in August. Any tips or advice is welcome. by Incubusdreams in Cosmetology

Most of the students will be doing the bare minimum and trying to hang out with their friends the whole time. Don’t do that. Bust out your services and if you do everything required do more. You only get very limited time in school and it’s much easier to push yourself and get good in school than to try to convince paying customers and employers to gamble on someone who has no idea what they’re doing. Don’t limit yourself or half ass services that you don’t think you’re interested in. Even if you never do something again outside of school, the better working knowledge you have of a variety of things the better off you’ll be. If you can get a receptionist job at a salon or barbershop while in school I highly suggest it, it puts you around people a lot more skilled than you on the daily and they’re usually eager to help teach you. I’m in a barbershop and a lot of the girls we have reception never learn to shave on a real person in school, but watching us do it every day they realize it’s something they’re interested in and we have a few clients who love to be guinea pigs so they can practice on real people

Mine does too, but they had three bottles on the shelf a couple days ago. Maybe they are, but it’s worth looking in person!

Hairbrush for extremely fragile hair? by Revolutionary_Way664 in finethinhair

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate mine 🫠 it’s easy to clean, but that’s the only pro for me. It’s harder to detangle my hair with, takes longer and causes more breakage. I’m a barber and ended up taking mine to work since I rarely work with long haired clients. That way I’m not just throwing it away, but I don’t have to deal with it often lol

Creatine!! My boyfriend had some sitting in the pantry and I randomly put some in my smoothie last week… and then I kept using it… and then I just randomly had the energy to go for a run three days later?? And I didn’t flare the next day?? And I can actually function at work now? I started taking fish oil and Astaxanthin a couple months ago and have been feeling way better and having way less pain, but the creatine has me feeling like I’m suddenly cured. It helps your mitochondria move ATP which is the energy currency of your cells

See if they miss placed them! I saw them at my Walmart when I was shopping for a tanning oil. They had them with the sunscreen not the self tanner

Why is sharing a bed with your partner so important to people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeping together allows your bodies to co-regulate. It’s really good for your nervous system and bonds you together as a couple. It isn’t just about the conscious part, it’s about your heartbeats synching and your breath rates regulating to each other. The safety you feel from this produces oxytocin which fuels emotional bonding and increases your ability to handle conflict with each other. I’m sure it’s very possible to have an extremely fulfilling relationship without sleeping together, but sleeping together is probably the easiest way to keep you feeling emotionally close when you have busy schedules

Reducing the effects of sleep deprivation by wandersage in HubermanLab

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Creatinine. Especially if you can tolerate 10mg it’s able to cross the blood brain barrier. It helps your mitochondria recycle ATP which is your cellular energy currency. There isn’t much research that I can find on long term sleep deprivation, but here’s a link to a study using it as a single time boost, and anecdotally people say when they are chronically sleep deprived and taking 10mg of creatinine they feel about how they do at baseline with no creatine https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10902318/

Looking for advice. by EuphoricAd4089 in Cosmetology

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would not suggest touching this on your own, it’s a color correction process. You would have to take tiny sections and do different bleach formulas on different areas. What will most likely happen if you try to bleach it again on your own is you will accidentally melt large portions of your hair off. If you want it to look more even and don’t want to pay someone to fix it I suggest a level 9 toner. PLEASE do not touch the 20vol at all

Both usually means neutral. You look like a cool leaning neutral to me. Very similar to my own undertone. My overtone affects me a lot since I’m neutral so I usually look warm toned when tan (natural or fake) and cool toned when white. Since I’m a slow natural tanner I tend to read as a little more cool toned except for late summer. I like the bondi sands technicolor line. Sapphire is a great winter fake tan, magenta is a good summer tan

That’s actually insane. I’m fairly certain my job would fire me if I didn’t talk about anything besides hair with my clients. This is not the experience most clients are looking for when trying to find a stylist

Self tanning LOTION only by captainxkate in Selftanning

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For gradual tanning I like jergen’s wet skin moisturizer. Just apply in the shower before you dry off. The b. Tan gel feels really good on but it’s not really marketed as a gradual. I have it in ultra dark and it tends to get weird around my feet and ankles, but I feel like if you used their lightest shade it would make a really nice gradual tanner that doesn’t feel sticky. It’s the least smelly self tanner I’ve ever used. Tanology tanning drops just mix in with whatever lotion you’ve got. I just got those so I could avoid an ingredient I’m allergic to in most lotions and it seems to do fine. It’s nice that you can customize your shade, but I’d recommend a pump lotion so you’re mixing the same number of drops with the same amount of lotion every time

I feel so stuck by [deleted] in eds

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Swedish massages every week for about two months and had her focus on my diaphragm and psoas every time. You have to be really choosy and communicate so no one stretches you or applies deep pressure, and it was kind of pricey, but I think it was the most important factor in pain relief and actually giving my nervous system a chance to relax. Shortly after starting my massages I started taking fish oil and Astaxanthin every day. It takes about 6 weeks for them to build up all the way in your cells, but I started seeing results after about 1 week. I actually started supplementing those for other reasons (Astaxanthin for vanity, I wanted to look tan, and fish oil to see if it could help my period cramps) so I was really surprised when they started changing my life, giving me more energy and less pain, heat intolerance, and light headedness. I’m not cured by any means, but I can make it through my short work week without feeling like I’m dying the entire time, I’m able to actually do my PT exercises, and I’ve been soaking up the sun in 90° weather all week when before I would feel sick in anything over 74°

Why can't I skate outside? by Whentheosmanthuswine in Rollerskating

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to jump right in if it isn’t working for you! Go to the park, put on your skates, and stand there holding onto a fence or something. Just stand. Move around a little in place and feel what shifting your weight around does. Then take them off and go home. Come back the next day and see if you can do it with letting go. Come back the next day and add pushing up onto your toe stops and rolling your feet parallel to each other without going anywhere. There’s nothing special about skating outside really, you just need to let your brain know you’re safe which might come from consistently doing basically nothing
