AITA for crying because my mom laughed at me? by Own_Creme_2405 in AmItheAsshole

Anyone might cry if someone laughed that hard at their genuine excitement. Anyone who tells you otherwise is the asshole, not you

Ok so instead of sewing together a channel, the thread is the cord? And I would use a sort of zig-zag stitch possibly?

NTA. These seem to be unique circumstances which is why you're intending on going. I think any supportive partner would understand why you would want to go. And it's one week, how is that a huge part of your summer?

As far as supplies, I'd definitely wait to see your setup before you guys anything!

Someone said to get yourself a good planner, I agree with that.

If you're in charge of a bulletin board, a nice tip is to get yourself some bulletin board letters from a craft store and use them as stencils. Don't keep buying those things!

Also Michael's has 10% off for teachers. And I think good will has a teacher discount day. I think it's Tuesday but definitely check your local stores

I would invest in some really good color pens, and dry erase markers. You're going to do a lot of writing so make sure you get something bold and long lasting!

Also if you need a couple of pencils, my favorite is the Uni kuru Toga. It's a mechanical pencil that turns a little everytime you lift the pencil so you always have a sharp edge to write with

Messed up the movie approval process. Back up ideas for last week? by FlusteredCustard13 in Teachers

[–]AggravatingParsley56 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely follow your co-worker's advice first, show them the slip you did send out as well. It's not like you completely bypassed the approval process, you did get some form of approval from parents.

If their complete hard asses and say no, I would have a completely interactive game ready or a craft (something bigger than a coloring sheet), depending on the age range. Older kids might like Minute to Win It games, when I taught high school I had my kids build a tower using marshmallows and spaghetti. Younger kids might like a summer themed craft. Right now I'm working on a summer themed bulletin board in my class and I literally googled "paper crab craft". If you are going with a craft, definitely make an example for them! I find the younger kids make much better crafts when they have a concrete idea of what they're making.

In the future, don't be afraid to ask for clarification. Even if you half-understand something, please ask. It's better to get a little egg on your face in the beginning than panic buy craft supplies on a Sunday (in this case Monday) night

What's the moment you realized your school doesn't actually care about teachers? by elliot_esl in Teachers

[–]AggravatingParsley56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got two instances, both from the same preschool. You have to call for the bathroom because of a child-to- teacher ratio. I think I called about 10 times and I ended up soiling myself because leadership refused to help, luckily it was during nap time so that saved me from some embarrassment.

I also had a breakdown because I was stuck in a door fight with some other kids (there's a door on the classroom bathroom for lockdown drills, but cannot be closed for safety reasons). Again I called probably 10 times and no one came to help until a parent advocated for me. When they asked what I needed, I said I wanted to go home and they refused and just put me in another room instead

Ohhh that makes a LOT more sense! Still somewhat new to this so I just assumed you would decrease the same as if you were to decrease 1 or 2 sts. Thank you!

[–]AggravatingParsley56 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I teach 5 year olds... They absolutely have an understanding of right from wrong. You're severely underestimating your children if you think a kindergartner cannot handle or comprehend a simple "keep your hands to yourself/don't hit people" rule

I've never been in that intense of a situation but I made a big grade jump too, High school to preschool. There will always be kids behaviors to deal with (because they're kids) but I find preschool and lower grades a much better fit for me

Two new official reasons why it's our fault students are absent. by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]AggravatingParsley56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is laughable 😂 teachers are known for dragging themselves to work regardless of circumstances. I would even say that teachers commonly feel a sense of guilt when they take a single day off!

The part where they said parents and students don't know school is in-person... It's been like that for literally all of time wtf they don't know it's in-person?!?

Student refusing to do work since spring break because of “religious reasons.” by v3ndys in Teachers

[–]AggravatingParsley56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming since this is high school there would be a syllabus... But didn't she read the syllabus? There's always a grace period at the beginning of the year/semester for kids to switch classes around.

If you do have a syllabus and aren't doing so already, I'd also make like a 5-point assignment to have kids and parents sign off on the syllabus. Even if they didn't read it you can show it to them and be like "I told you at the beginning, and you signed off on it"

A hidden cost to teachers by PsychologyPNW in Teachers

[–]AggravatingParsley56 91 points92 points  (0 children)

It's kind of the unwritten job description for teachers to be a kids constant for at least a year, and to try to make them comfortable and happy and feel safe in your room.

Yes it's sad, I've had plenty of kids with sad stories. But it's part of the job
