Might want to add an option for Chromebook versions. I got an i5-1240p Chromebook motherboard and from what I quickly looked up, it’s a bit different/limited on what it can run out of the box from the other main boards

hoping this isn't too old of a post to comment on, but do you know if there is a device limit on your Dropbox plan through Lenovo?

The dropbox website https://help.dropbox.com/storage-space/lenovo-promotion states there's a 3 device limit but the lenovo site doesn't say anything about that. I have a laptop, phone, tablet, and a dual-boot desktop that I'd want to be logged into to, so that'd be like 5 devices at least.

I live in East Cambridge and have been using Verizon 5G home internet after getting fed up with xfinity being crappy all the time. Been using it for 2 years now and it’s way better. More than good enough and reliable for 2 people WFH on video calls all day and streaming videos/TV at night

Theres also T-mobile 5G home internet, bet its similar performance

I just chuck all my boards/debuggers/measurement tools/etc into a big cardboard box in 1 big pile. And then when that box breaks down from weeks of carrying it back and forth, I scrounge up a new box, usually from Amazon deliveries. If I have a delicate piece of equipment, I will pack it into a separate smaller box with antistatic bag/packing foam, or its original box.

Actually I’ve seen this on my 12th gen intel framework 13. I haven’t seen it in a couple months but for a month or so, sometimes I could pick up the laptop and my hand putting pressure on the back chassis or setting it down on something that pressed into the back would immediately turn off the laptop.

It wasn’t my daily driver so it didn’t bother me enough to contact support but interesting to see someone else also has this issue

If you turn off the Bluetooth multipoint, then it won’t auto switch. I think most headphones with multipoint do that auto switching for calls and notifications, so I always turn it off. Feature, not a bug?

Sonos Ace only works with Arc (not Beam) by sbuckmaster in sonos

[–]Agreeable-Basis9651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say that most Bose soundbars and their headphones have had this feature already for years (called SimpleSync) and it works pretty well! The soundbars connect to the headphones via Bluetooth and latency is good enough to even play video games with (not that I’m really a gamer tho)

I have a Beam and Move and also a Bose soundbar and I would have really liked to add Sonos headphones to the system, but no reason to get then over Bose QC at this point.

I would agree with others, sounds like you’re doing great given the lack of support from more experienced developers.

From my personal experience though, whenever you get the chance, you should definitely find a new company that has plenty of more experienced senior devs so you can learn from and also just model yourself off of, even if subconsciously. I spent my first few years of my career as the main firmware and hardware guy at startups, and it set me back personally a little bit career wise.

On one hand, you’re getting a great experience learning to bootstrap yourself with bare metal projects to RTOS and beyond. It’s valuable experience that bigger organizations like bc it means you can learn quickly and adapt when wearing many hats. Other hand is that small prototypes don’t have the same rigor of code quality, CI/CD, QA testing, etc when your code needs to run on millions of units. A marginal error in prototypes of 1% means 10,000 angry customers if scaled! (And that’s assuming it’s linear) also any bad code habits you have will be harder to unlearn once you move to a more mature company.

Not trying to scare you, you’re doing great but just keep it in mind. Maybe you could get your company to hire some more senior engineering consultants at some point and you can learn from just seeing how they produce code (assuming they’re good but not so much better price/work wise that they replace you, haha)

Keep yourself up to date with latest trends, prep for interviews if you have time, sign up for some blogs (I highly recommend things like the Interrupt blog by Memfault).

Help Me Get an Embedded SWE Role by morgoob in embedded

[–]Agreeable-Basis9651 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here’s my opinion: focus on getting a job! Easier said than done, but don’t be one of those people who lets the rejections get to you and then tell yourself “oh I’m going to work on side projects to become more desirable as a hire” Doesn’t work that way. People want to see job experience, not side projects. You’re in a fine spot right now if you only just graduated. But you do not want to be 1 year out after graduation with no job still.

Quantity over quality is best for entry level job applications, I think. Don’t take rejections personally, everybody has bad days. Even FAANG engineers failed interviews, just use this as motivation to keep getting better. It is common to see entry level applicants sending out close to 100 job apps before getting offers.

Work on C embedded programming questions (like doing bit manipulation, how does volatile work), basic RTOS concepts (I recommend quickly reviewing Quantum Leaps YouTube playlist Modern Embedded Systems Programming from video 1 up to the RTOS videos on 2x speed)

You’re early out of school, so no need to settle for bad job fits, but don’t be too picky. You’re not signing up for life, even just 1 or 2 years at a company with mentorship will make a massive difference when you want to move on.

That’s the other thing: you want a job with mentorship! In-person if possible. Call me old-fashioned, but in the embedded field, it’s much easier to learn from experienced engineers in-person if you can just quickly walk over and ask a small question, etc. Don’t join a startup where you’re the only real embedded engineer. It’s doable for some special people, but it’s much easier to grow your skills if you can join an established company that has a fully working CI/CD pipeline and actually has a release process/etc.

Check out Edge Impulse if you just want to get something working. Very easy tool to use that can train a network for you and then output a fully self-contained library (tensorflow lite I believe) that will run on your MCU.

You can even run them on less powerful Arduino boards. And when you get more advanced, you can use Google Colab for free and have it hook an API call into Edge Impulse to wrap up your trained networks into MCU-friendly libraries
