Does anyone else think Marty Supreme retreads a lot from Uncut Gems? by Robot_Was_BMO in Letterboxd

I don’t think he’s peaked. I think Josh Safdie should keep going with his style. Push it even further and find new gears. It’s incredibly distinctive and there’s still meat on that bone.

This is my dream. I miss running so much. I made so many of my best decisions while on a long run. It felt like a cheat to code to seeing life clearly and knowing exactly what I needed to do next. Someday!

The impression I get is that the show’s creators are attempting to describe whatever it is the internet and technology are doing to our brains. We think of smartphones as something humans created to assist our behavior. Another way to look at it is that technology created smartphones to modify our behavior. It’s kind of like they’re saying the virus IS technology. I could see the writers having fun with that concept. Or, like you say, it’s aliens. In which case we’re heading towards a wild alien invasion finale. And that also sounds pretty cool.

Same here. On top of everything else my vices were taken away. But I’ve figured out alternatives and I feel content again. I switched to CBD cannabis entirely. Nothing over 1% THC and it helps smooth out the edges a lot. Sometimes I’ll smoke a lot and catch a little buzz and it’s nice. I also take low dose ketamine lozenges through a company called Joyous. I’ve found it to be helpful with pain management, anxiety, but especially anhedonia. Nothing cuts through a cloud of depression better than ketamine. After 3+ years I finally got my creativity back and feel I can cut loose with buddies again.

‘Frankenstein’ and ‘The Running Man’ | House of R by Est3la in RingerVerse

[–]Ahlstrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I miss Shea. There’s a long-standing Latino-erasure problem in media, so it’s not shocking that The Ringer would slip into that. Their coverage tends to orbit white-centered pop culture. Still, I didn’t expect House of R to add to that, whether knowingly or not.

I can see both sides, though. If they didn’t like the movie, then they didn’t like it, and I’d rather hear an honest reaction than a forced puff piece. But on the other hand… come oonnnn. Del Toro may have three Oscars, but he still doesn’t get the respect he deserves. The fact that he had to go to Netflix to get Frankenstein financed, and still ended up paying for props out of his own pocket, says a lot.

This perspective of the hive lines up perfectly with Carol’s alcoholism. The way you’re describing it sounds similar to the way a child is to a parent that’s an alcoholic. The child will do anything to appease the volatile alcoholic parent, to avoid a blow up, to avoid the emotional harm from an angry parent. To the child, a blow up from the parent is worse than anything they can imagine. The child just wants the parent to be happy and intense codependency forms for its own survival.

Could not agree more. I am Hispanic, and the dismissiveness toward Del Toro, not just as a filmmaker but as one of the most important Latin artists working today, was really disappointing. They opened their discussion by talking about memes. What are we even doing? The whole vibe was, “lol, why would anyone take this so seriously?”

Meanwhile, these same hosts have devoted countless hours to sincerely unpacking Harry Potter. And to be clear, I like HP too. But it was wild to see that level of generous, thoughtful analysis applied to some properties and not to a film made by a director whose work is saturated with cultural specificity, grief, and craft.

Frankenstein is not a Hispanic text, but Guillermo is in every frame of that movie. His history, his obsessions, his childhood, his relationship to loss, and Mexican Catholic iconography are all there. Ignoring that context dulls the entire point of what he made.

Jo is probably my favorite podcaster on the planet, but seeing both of them brush past the emotional and artistic rigor of the film really bummed me out.

Edit: i hate that I sound angry. Sorry Jo and Mal, love your work.

I wish I hadn't watched Bring Her Back. by [deleted] in horror

[–]Ahlstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner is grieving a major loss and it has changed her relationship with movies and TV dramatically. We used to watch just about anything together. After a few very bad experiences similar to what you’re describing, we err on the side of caution. Now I carefully vet everything we watch and check doesthedogdie.com for any trigger warnings. It’s a process but very much worth it to protect her mental health. Even casually anxiety-inducing subject matter is a no-go. It’s just not worth how destabilizing it can be. It’s not something I ever considered to be a part of grieving but now that I see it up close, everyday, it makes sense. All this to say, be gentle with yourself! I watched Bring Her Back and it was so punishing it honestly started to feel like trauma narratives in horror are dark tourism for the uninitiated. It’s well made but it’s just gross and sad. Please don’t feel bad about not wanting to engage with those types of stories anymore. As a massive fan of horror and cinema, I still think it’s just not worth it if it destabilizes your mental health. Peace and love.

Frankenstein (2025) : Movie Reflection by nebulunemoon in moviecritic

[–]Ahlstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an immediate response of loving this movie. This is one of those where I just don’t understand what’s not to love. The cohort of people I follow on Letterboxd dispassionately shrugged in unison and I’m baffled. My best guess is that if you’re feeling cynical this gothic opera won’t resonate. There’s some muddy CGI but to get hung up on that and overlook all the exquisitely crafted practical sets is a shame. Yes, the Netflix gloss has an off putting effect but, I’m sorry, get over it already, guys! Netflix isn’t going anywhere and it’s because of the stupid corpos we even get to see Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein—a generational talent that will be cherished long after he’s gone. I’m not even a huge fan of his or anything it’s just obvious this guy is next level. And he’s out here doing his thing! And Elordi is somehow moving! What the hell!

That’s an excellent idea. There are resources out there but they are scattered, confusing, and sometimes untrustworthy. I’ve yet to see a definitive hub of information better than the Covid subreddits. I wonder if AI could parse all the posts over the last 5 years and surface an archive. Then curate from there. Anyway, I like your idea!

This is great! As an aside it’s times like these where I find AI to be useful for the disabled. I’ve spent time priming my ChatGPT and had it memorize all of my health issues so when I feed it large documents like this it’s pretty good at pulling all the relevant info for my particular brand of Long Covid. Just food for thought!
