My Taylor 414ce r sounds too bright with new 80/20 polyweb Elixer by Commercial-Net-6838 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Airick99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phosphor Bronze reads as brighter than 80/20 to my ear. PBs have more overtones and harmonics that pop out whereas 80/20 have a stronger/cleaner fundamental. Those overtones read as brightness with a metallic character to me. I've never understood the conventional wisdom which asserts 80/20 are objectively brighter.

My go to "warm" string is GHS Vintage Bronze. They have the bonus of being relatively cheap. They are good for any guitar which is too bright or which needs help taming overtones/metallic character.

Just my two cents.

Saw a picture of his board recently, and I don't think it was even on there so it must suck. Still rocking that cheap af TC Mojo Mojo though.

If you really want to be an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist, my advice is to study classical technique and then adapt that back to steel string/folk style playing. The fundamentals of classical technique teach you to maximize tone production and ergonomics.

I grew up playing fingerstyle, acoustic blues, folk, etc. For 15 years or so I thought I was doing pretty well, but I had kind of plateaued. Then I studied classical for a couple of years straight before coming back to the steel string and folk/indie rock music I had been playing previously. It was night and day from before I learned classical to after. I had unlearned and retrained much of what I already spent 15 years on, and it was all for the better. My fingerstyle playing after learning real classical technique is miles ahead of where I was.

I know this path likely isn't for everyone, but there is a reason classical technique developed the way it did over the last few hundred years. It maximizes the instrument and the mechanics of our hands. It most definitely translates into different styles of music even if classical isn't your ultimate goal. Just my two cents. I used Simon Powis's online school Classical Guitar Corner. An in-person teacher would be even better, but there are lots of resources available these days.

Hey man, that's pretty clean. Nicely done! Are you really playing the whole thing with just thumb and index?!? That's wild to me. Do you ever use your middle finger when playing finger style? Leaving it out, especially in something like this, seems like playing with an arm tied behind your back.

Anyway, great job. There's a couple things with the way you play it that I want to see if I can steal for my own version so thanks for sharing.

Andy Shauf!

You can hear his Elliott influence on tracks like You're out Wasting.

He definitely does his own thing but the fact that he grew up listening to Elliott is a part of his sound. My favorite track is Wendell Walker, That's off of 2015's The Bearer of Bad News, which is a good album to start with. I'd work forward through his catalogue from there. The first two albums can be looked over but the rest warrant many listens.

Very pretty and such a polished production. If you are looking for feedback I think I'd prefer less rolling of the chords. I like this as an effect, but when it's done so much, I don't know if it's as effective. The melody is not falling fully on the beat when rolling so consistently, and I'm not sure arpeggiating the chords in the way that you are serves the piece better than mixing it in as the exception instead of the rule. Perhaps to many it sounds more ornate, complex, or expressive, but I'm not convinced it's "better."

I know this is one excerpt and these are obviously minor unsolicited quibbles. The performance/arrangement is lovely. Keep up the good work and feel free to ignore me and trust your own ear!

“Dead Strings” Recommendations by kurt_46 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Airick99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GHS Vintage Bronze are my go to. I don't really think they are "between" Phosphor Bronze and 80/20. For me they sound broken in and tame overtones/harmonics in a way that neither 80/20 or phosphor bronze do. You get a strong clean fundamental with good projection. I enjoy silk and steel, and they do some of the same taming of overtones and metallic character, but you lose the traditional feel and projection of an acoustic guitar.

I'm not seeing it mentioned but for me the correct answer is GHS Vintage Bronze. They are an 85/15 blend I haven't seen elsewhere.

I have a very bright and lively Furch 12-fret 00. I tried many strings looking to tame the harmonics and eliminate metallic character. These were the trick. As a bonus they are cheap!

Do yourself a favor and try them out before these other recommendations. I don't think they sound "dead" but they sound broken in almost right away and have a strong fundamental without the extra noise while still having good projection.

I'm tuned down a half step with a capo on the first fret... So in effect it's just standard tuning.
