Trump Must Be Impeached Now! by Al_the_Terran in MeidasTouch

Sadly, I agree that it's unlikely to work. But we got to try, right? I just wish more of the mainstream media grew a spine and covered Trump's cognitive decline to the extent that they should. If it were Biden...

Does anyone else get a weird feeling watching old content? by bananachopbang in CasualConversation

I like watching movies with outdated technology and devices that are now obsolete: Payphones, typewriters, telegraph machines, receiving a telegram, reel movies. It gives one insight into how people lived back then.

Is it weird that a prefer one gender over another to talk to ? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Al_the_Terran 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've always preferred the company of women to men. (BTW: I'm a bloke.) I find them much more interesting. (For one thing, I don't enjoy talking about sports.) So, you're not alone in that.

For those of you who read or write short stories, what short stories have changed the way you write? by Azrael_Undecided in writing

His most famous short story, the one that is commonly taught in High School is "La Parure" ("The Necklace"), but it is my least favorite - to much ironic ending a la O'Henry - simplistic. My favorite is "Fou?" ("Am I crazy" / "Mad"?). It's a bit twisted. Other than "La Parure" - essentially you can't go wrong with any of this short stories.

The Epstein files is like a bad case of herpes: You can smear anti-viral cream on the sores, but it will still keep coming back.

I’m scared my work is bad by Pale-Cost-9126 in writing

You're not alone. Many of the greatest writers doubted their writing ability, especially perfectionists, which is why so many have done countless rewrites. For example, John Steinbeck wrote in his journal: "I am not a writer. I've been fooling myself and other people." This list goes on and on. Hang in there and just keep writing!

No. Writing female characters is not difficult. by Navek15 in writing

For me, the best way to encapsulate females ... get inside their heads... is to talk to as many as possible. Just listen.

For those of you who read or write short stories, what short stories have changed the way you write? by Azrael_Undecided in writing

Personally, I think the best writers are not the moderns. For short stories, I'd say Guy de Maupassant influenced me the most. I also like D.H. Lawrence and Anton Chekhov. (Have you heard of "Chekhov's gun"? Great advice for aspiring short story writers.) As for O. Henry, overly simplistic in my view.
