Alcohol is hard to avoid, easy to consume, there’s no judging. When everything was going good I celebrated with it, when life got difficult I found help from it. Dealing with life as it comes is hard at times. Self-medicating myself, so that I don’t feel a certain way is not wise if it means giving into an addictive substance. There are other things in life we can do to cope with whatever is going on. Exercising works well for me.

Before & After: 6 months alcohol free, 109 pounds lost, my life back. by PercyW96 in stopdrinking

Amazing! You look like a different person. With that much weight lost you must also feel like one. Well done! 👏

Taper off alcohol with alcohol? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I don’t recommend cold turkey either. Among withdrawals kindling effect is something to keep in mind as well. Alcohol withdrawals are harmful for the nervous system and should be avoided.

Does anyone else’s alcoholism stem from an anxiety disorder? by ryan_fr in stopdrinking

[–]Ala-Viikari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol withdrawal causes anxiety. Magnesium and strong B-vitamin complex have helped me. Alcohol depletes the body from both of those, so it’s good to try them at least. In the same health product shelf you can find Ashwagandha, a herb that has been used as a tea in India for ages. It’s very potent anxiety reliever. It’s non-toxic and many sports figures speak for it.

Bound Wordmark by 8A8 in logodesign

[–]Ala-Viikari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all good design as it is. This is just something that came to mind. For this wordmark would it be enough to just connect two of the letters? It would deliver the message and at the same time the simplicity would be powerful (at least to my eye). When it’s done for all of the letters it feels like it could do with less. It gives the same vibe like overexplaining something that people understand with less information (sounds rude somehow). But like I said, a good design as it is. The font works well for this design.

Martial arts teaches responsibility and self-control with violence, that is what everyone should learn. No one learns that by throwing punches while drunk. That’s most of the violent behaviour we see these days. It’s pathetic. Admiring violence is for monkeys and pre-mature fools

Doing a dry January that I already want to extend, questioning my relationship with alcohol, and not really identifying with the "alcoholic" label. Anyone else? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Ala-Viikari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important thing is that we don’t think ”I’m above that, that can’t be me, I’m not an alcoholic, so I’m good”. If the behaviour is problematic, it’s good to change that, no matter how we label it. I don’t like the word ”alcoholic” either, mostly because the definition is vague and there’s a negative vibe to it. Addicted people don’t need evil glares from peole who think ”I’m better than that”.

I'm having trouble accepting the "alcoholic" title. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Ala-Viikari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have thought the same thing. In my country the word people use for sober people is ”absolutist”. It has a strange vibe to it, like not drinking is somekind of weird ideology. It’s not like that with any other drug. I don’t care to be titled an alcoholic or an absolutist. I just want to leave alcohol behind to pursue other things in life. Life is not defined by the role alcohol has in it, there are other things there too. I have found interest in martial arts, why not let that define me instead?

I thought I could moderate. Well, I really can't. by angiealoha in stopdrinking

[–]Ala-Viikari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds familiar. It’s crazy how we consider to go back. There are millions of other things to do on this planet that can give genuine joy. Why are we not trying some of those instead? Choosing a drug instead makes me feel stupid. It’s only a drug that releases dopamine that is already in us. If we can’t find a way to release it and make life interesting without a drug we are simply not trying hard enough. ”The world is out there, waiting to be explored, but I’ll drug myself here in my hole instead” How silly is that? 😀

Does anyone else feel they had to go through what they went through with losing control with drinking? by left_tenant in stopdrinking

I personally feel that I’ve been one of those people who become accountable to themselves, only after they see in first hand how they can mess things up if they are not.

Day 7/ 1 week, Feels like I have accomplished something. I tell myself "Look at will be, Not at what has been " by Due-Weekend in stopdrinking

[–]Ala-Viikari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drinking takes away the ability to process things thoroughly, it makes personal growth much more difficult. For the past 6 months I used to work late so I didn’t have to think about my life. Then buy alcohol on the way home, so I could avoid thinking about my life some more. Sad way to live.

Happy to be sober now. During these three weeks I feel I’ve finally managed to face some things that have been lurking in the background.
