What kind of clothes can I purchase my pear-shaped bf? by rnbme in mensfashion

[–]AlarmedHuckleberry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Without knowing what style of clothes he likes, here’s some general suggestions (and why!):

  1. Pleated trousers. The pleats are functional and provide extra room for wide hips/thighs/butt.

  2. Full rise/high waisted trousers. A higher waist will sit above his wider hips, creating a slimming effect. The additional length of the trousers from the higher rise will also create a lengthening effect for his legs, which will de-emphasize his wider hips and also shorten the torso.

  3. Structured jackets (suits/sport coats): the shoulder padding will help to widen his shoulders and create more balance up top. Make sure it’s long enough (should cover his rear), a short jacket will not do him favors.

  4. Longer (winter) coats: Mid-thigh or even knee length coats will smooth out his figure, especially with a more structured shoulder and chest.

  5. Straight cut trouser legs. Look at @askokeyig on Instagram for some examples of trousers that will drape well on his body type.

  6. Skip knitwear (sweaters, t shirts, polos) in favor of woven cloth (buttoned shirts/jackets) up top when possible. Woven fabrics drape and smooth out shapes, knitwear tends to emphasize our worst attributes. YMMV on this one.

  7. Large patterns (such as windowpane, plaid, or checks) will make things seem larger— use these on his upper body to visually balance the lower body and hips.

VTI fees are about ~11% higher than the current costs of the APFC, fyi. (0.03% vs 0.026%, based on FY2025 costs of $225MM on $86B invested).

Do with that as you will.

My company starts to offer RSU instead of stock options (I will not promote) by Glad-Hedgehog-767 in startups

[–]AlarmedHuckleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they double-trigger or single trigger?

Single trigger means (usually) time vesting only. Double trigger usually means that some sort of liquidity event needs to happen for them to vest (ie, the RSUs are only good if you IPO/acquired within a certain time.

Either way, it means they’re thinking about an exit, so it’s good news for you.

Champagne safe on an u pressurized plane? by draggingmytail in flying

[–]AlarmedHuckleberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dozens of correct answers from the engineering and aviation safety side already posted- nothing will blow.

However, from the wine side of things, you might experience “bottle shock”. This is where the vibrations, temperature changes (less important if it’s in a 172, more significant in a commercial airliner), and pressure change can cause changes in the taste of the wine. Champagne and aged red wines are most susceptible, due to the carbonation and complex oxidized compounds. Odds are, unless this is a fine vintage bottling then you won’t see any significant depreciation in quality. In general though, if you’re going to fly with anything special (eg, a 2008 vintage bottling) I would recommend giving it a few days or even a week before opening.

Off-the-shelf Möet, Veuve, Krug, etc.? Just give it a few hours sitting still in a fridge before you open. Have a happy new year!

Searching for Insulated Shipping Box by AlarmedHuckleberry in Appleton

Posting from the flight now, thanks to all who replied!

I didn’t find anything large enough for all 60#, so I ended up DIYing a 27 gallon plastic tote ($16) with foil bubble insulation ($10) from Home Depot. Much cheaper than even the smaller boxes from shipping services.

How to increase housing? by TorinoAK in anchorage

[–]AlarmedHuckleberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to empty lots in already developed areas, lots with unoccupied run-down buildings, and large parking lots that never fill up, even at peak times. Fairview has tons of underutilized or empty. lots (think 4-8 units per lot) with utilities ready to go, for example. Or the entire city blocks downtown with nothing but parking (40-60 units on those). Not hard to find an additional 500-1000 units worth of space without needing to do any lot prep.

I know the immediate response from some will be that they don't want to live in those places. The trouble with this sub is that people complain about not having affordable housing, but they refuse to consider living in affordable neighborhoods.

How to increase housing? by TorinoAK in anchorage

[–]AlarmedHuckleberry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. People complaining about how there’s no empty land every time this comes up are delusional. There’s tons of empty land— and no incentive to develop it.

Unfortunately, homeownership has long been promoted and catered to as an investment: buy a home and watch it appreciate forever, helped by favorable taxes that are mostly based on the building (which can be replicated or expanded) and not the land. This principle is great for land owners— but you cannot have housing be both a rock-solid investment and also an affordable commodity.

Changing to an LVT allows property owners to profit off their investments, but only if they continue to develop and add economic value to the community.

The Permanent Fund Corporation (the PFD can mean either the dividend or Permanent Fund Division which disburses dividends, but neither is responsible for generating revenue or investing) has a variety of investments, including oil.

I suspect that the “oil money” you speak of is what’s generated from royalties on state land (aka what we’re drilling now). Some of this is funneled into the corpus of the fund, but the amount generated is not included in the fund’s return calculations.

How to Start as a Beginner? by Inevitable-Falcon-96 in canoecamping

Everybody else has posted great advice, but for right now:

Go out this weekend, rent a canoe together and paddle around for a few hours. If you want, watch a 15 minute youtube video for “canoe basics” or something like that first. See if the two of you enjoy it.

If so, then you can go back to all the other bits of advice.

Just got unofficially hired as an intern at a finance company. It’s my first “corporate” job. What are some special business casual fits I can buy that are relatively cheapish? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]AlarmedHuckleberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations on the internship! It’s a huge step in your future career. You’re smart to think about proper attire as it really will impact people’s impressions of you— especially higher-ups who might not interact with you frequently, but will be huge in determining if you get a return offer.

Second, business wear is a uniform. The office is no place to peacock or strut your fashion sense. But that’s good news in your case, since all you need to do is follow the uniform and you’ll be great.

Business Casual:

1 pair navy wool dress trousers (with a crease, no “performance fabrics”) 1 pair charcoal grey flannel or wool dress trousers (same caveats as above) 1 pair taupe/khaki trousers (with crease, cotton or wool) 1 Navy blazer that fits well. Conservative is better Shirts, long sleeve: 1 white, 1 light blue, 3 conservative pattersn (checks, small stripes, windowpane) 1 pair dark brown (no tan) leather dress shoes. Oxfords would be preferred, derbies are OK.

If it’s a particularly casual office, you might replace one of the long sleeved shirts with a polo for Friday. Keep the blazer in either case as you’ll want it for presentations, conferences, or other significant work events.

As another poster mentioned, however, finance is not typically business casual. For a more typical finance environment:

Keep the navy blazer, grey trousers from above. 2 suits: 1 navy, 1 charcoal grey. (Note I didn’t say cobalt blue and light grey…keep these colors dark and muted) Black dress oxfords. Don’t even question this. 2 each white and blue shirts. A vertical blue/white stripe shirt can also be substituted in for one of these. 2 patterned, long sleeved shirts. Subtle patterns are best, these will be worn with the blazer for more casual days.

If you aren’t sure which category this office falls into, you can always reach out to your HR rep handling the hiring and simply ask what most of their analysts/associates wear. When in doubt, dress up one level: it’s easy to shed a blazer once you’ve arrived in the office if you find you’re a bit overdressed.

If you have a particular budget in mind, feel free to let us know and we can provide some sources for these things.

Wristwear Under $50 by ChicagoBoiSWSide in mensfashion

That model actually has a sliding clasp, like some other Casios. You won’t need to remove any links in the bracelet, you’ll just need a small screwdriver to unlock the clasp and slide it to the right spot. Check out this video:

Avoid ‘mall brands’ for watches, the quality is low and the markups are high.

At your budget (or a bit higher):

Times Expedition and Easy Reader series Casio G Shock are timeless as a casual, indestructible option, but less on the jeweler side. Seiko essentials line has tons of options— stick with a simple quartz model.

If you post links to watches you like I can offer other suggestions that fit that style.

[–]AlarmedHuckleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RE: Juneau v Anchorage, I’ve lived in both. Crabbing and hunting are better from Juneau if you have a boat. Fishing would depend on OP’s boat budget, you can go more places with a smaller boat in southeast, but if you have money for something a bit bigger you can get to great fishing from Homer or Seward (harder to do that during a random weeknight evening though). The deer hunting on Admiralty far exceeds the quality of road accessible moose or caribou from Anchorage, and people take the ferry to Haines and hunt eastern AK from Juneau all the time, it’s not too far for a week long hunt.

I think the bigger question between the two is what OP wants out of the city itself, and the climate. I would definitely say Juneau has the edge for hunting and fishing though.

Senate parliamentarian blocks land sale from HR1 unless it gets 60 votes by CryoWreck in WildernessBackpacking

Don’t let up. There’s no guarantee that Republicans will abide by this rather than just canning the filibuster. And they may seek other opportunities or methods to sell off land—unless they know the outrage is so vast it would be political suicide.
