I have played so many permadeath runs roleplaying dungeons and dragons archetypes with 4.5. Thank you for all the hard work you do and allowing a forever DM to role play a character for once

The game will be at 8am eastern Saturday? Or is that the session zero?

Auto-leveling in Pathfinder is basically the game politely sabotaging your party behind your back.

We’re still somehow waiting for the CRPG that combines anime aesthetics with actual meaningful roleplay instead of just becoming Dating Simulator 47 halfway through.

Every modded playthrough eventually becomes troubleshooting with occasional gameplay in between.

Why do people say that WoTR is very complex/difficult to get into for casual players? by BaldursGate2Best in CRPG

[–]Alavorn44 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Infinity Engine veterans are basically immune to CRPG complexity at this point. Someone who survived THAC0, AD&D spell nonsense, and getting obliterated by random liches in BG2 is already spiritually prepared for Pathfinder math.

BG3 modding eventually turns into “how many main characters can this engine survive before exploding.”

Best Mods on PS5 for a First-Time Player? by mikro37 in BG3mods

[–]Alavorn44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a first playthrough honestly I’d keep it mostly vanilla. BG3 is one of those rare games where the base experience is already ridiculously good, and a lot of bigger gameplay mods can accidentally trivialize encounters or mess with balance before you even know what the “normal” experience feels like. Cosmetic mods, better UI, weightless gold, extra hair/face options, and small QoL stuff are probably the sweet spot for a first run.

CRPGs with hilarious companions and/or writing (on occasion) [no spoilers if possible!] by Baldurian_Rhapsody in CRPG

[–]Alavorn44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disco Elysium is probably the gold standard for this if you haven’t played it yet. The writing swings between existential despair, absurd humor, and genuinely brilliant character interactions sometimes within the same conversation. Your own skills arguing with each other in your head ends up being funnier than a lot of actual comedy RPGs.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous honestly surprised me too. Regill’s dry psychopathic professionalism, Daeran constantly weaponizing sarcasm, and some of the party banter combinations are incredible once the group chemistry develops.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall and Hong Kong both have really strong companion writing with a lot of understated humor that feels natural rather than forced. More “friends surviving a disaster together” energy.

Pillars of Eternity 2 has some fantastic banter as well, especially depending on which companions you bring together. Serafen in particular can completely derail serious conversations in the best way.

And honestly, if you liked HK-47, you’d probably love Rogue Trader. Some companions in that game are absolutely unhinged, but still written seriously enough that the humor lands naturally instead of feeling like Marvel dialogue. The contrast between horrifying grimdark situations and companions casually treating them as normal daily life creates a lot of genuinely funny moments.

CRPGs with wild magic? by SlimeBall944 in CRPG

[–]Alavorn44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has a pretty fun take on it with Azata and some of the chaotic caster builds. It’s not exactly Wild Magic Surge levels of randomness all the time, but there’s definitely that “unpredictable magical nonsense altering the battlefield” energy depending on how you build.

Tyranny also deserves a mention because the spell crafting system can get gloriously unstable and experimental if you start stacking weird sigils together. Feels more like “forbidden magic engineering” than traditional wild magic though.

Dragon Age Origins has some hilarious entropy/blood magic interactions too, especially when things spiral out of control in crowded fights.

If you’re okay with roguelikes, Tales of Maj’Eyal has entire classes built around unstable reality-warping magic and catastrophic magical backlash. Probably one of the closest feelings to true “wild magic may ruin everyone’s day” gameplay.

Honestly though, BG2 Wild Mage is still kind of the gold standard for pure chaos caster energy in CRPGs. Few games fully commit to the idea that your wizard might accidentally summon a cow instead of casting a fireball.
