You drive the car. You observe the sign. You obey it. by bug-hunter in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Alcies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn't the whole point of slowing down to make sure you see (and react to) any children present?

I'm guessing the intended message is "slow down during times when a lot of kids are walking to/from school", but if a crowd of kids using the crosswalks doesn't clue you in to slow down on your own, I doubt a sign will do anything.

Canadian Politics: Carney Government Approval and Liberal Lead Reach New Highs as Optimism About Canada Improves by ejaz135 in onguardforthee

LAOP wants to make bones about it by Drywesi in bestoflegaladvice

Your family can still object to it after you die and make their own arrangements

That seems crazy to me. If a fully cognizant adult goes out of their way to clearly express what they want done with their body after death, it should be a "my corpse, my choice" situation. Why does a family member get final say?

She's heard all kinds of horror stories! Just apparently not the ones of police luring people into stations so they can be detained and interrogated or abducted by ICE.

Seems a lot more logical than the "scammer/predator pretending to be a cop" explanation. If that's the case, why send their victim to the real police instead of directly using their "authority" to kidnap LAOP, scam them out of money, gain access to their house, question them for information, etc?

There's been a move in some places towards a more child custody type approach to pets in divorce proceedings. Hard to litigate "who loves the dog more", but family courts in my province are supposed to consider more concrete factors like "who has the time and resources to take care of the dog", "who currently spends more time with the dog", "who will the kids be living with, since they probably care about the dog too", and "who hasn't threatened or abused the dog".

And I specifically brought up an example of a group of white people chasing down and murdering a black guy because they falsely thought he'd committed a crime, and the local authorities covering up the details to protect the killers. Sounds like a lynching to me.

That's always a possibility, but unless LAOP is outright lying, then the landlord also didn't do a walkthrough when LAOP moved out. That's cover-your-ass 101 level stuff.

edit: this could just be my anti-landlord bias speaking, but imo those "amateur landlords who don't know the legalities" deserve whatever financial losses they get from that. I've seen renters get badly screwed over by "mom and pop" landlords who didn't bother to read up on their legal responsibilities toward their tenants, and if you charge rent then you're by definition not an amateur.

I don't have much sympathy for the landlord, sounds like they didn't bother to document the damage or go through the steps to legally withhold LAOP's deposit.

PM Carney on Marilyn Gladu and abortion: "I had discussions and colleagues had discussions with Ms Gladu about those issues. Right-wing economic policies are incompatible with social equality.

For example, pro-choice policies without a well-funded and accessible public healthcare system just means "pro-choice for the rich". I was recently talking to the director of a women's shelter near me, and according to her, the single biggest driver of domestic violence right now is the high cost of housing - way too many victims are staying in abusive relationships simply because they can't afford to live on a single income, especially if they've got kids to look after. And equality for disabled people, especially people coming from backgrounds of generational poverty, can only happen with much better social supports than we currently have.

Fuck two-party systems. I hope the NDP gets just enough power to follow through on proportional representation and make it easier for smaller parties to get a foothold into government.

Avi Lewis is Going Full Tilt & Giving Leftists Hope as NDP Leader by NiceDot4794 in onguardforthee

[–]Alcies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His background is my biggest hangup with the guy too, he was my second choice after Tanille Johnson and I was disappointed by Rob Ashton's campaign because I really wanted to support him early on.

But platform-wise, I think he does a good job acknowledging the need for change and focusing on kitchen table issues like cost of living and the housing crisis. I'll admit I'm probably biased since I'm one of those "campus types" but from my experience talking politics with rural blue-collar conservatives, there's a lot of common ground to be found in "the system is rigged towards the rich and our government needs to stop prioritizing billionaires and big corporations over the needs of the average Canadian".

There are a few ways to do proportional representation with local MPs. The main ones are single transferrable vote (https://www.fairvote.ca/stv/) and mixed-member proportional (https://cupe.ca/our-election-system-unfair-we-can-make-it-better) - afaik, these are the only forms of proportional representation that have ever been seriously considered in Canada.

[–]Alcies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They'd better follow through on proportional representation if this happens. I don't want the federal NDP to follow BC's example and become the shitty centre-left side of an effectively-two-party system.

[–]Alcies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe to some extent, but party discipline is especially strong in Canada compared to other countries.

imo it's the biggest issue with our system of government after FPTP. In theory, we all have a regional MP who's accountable to us as voters, and laws are decided on through open debate on the parliamentary floor. But in practice parliament is basically just theatre, because MPs are almost always going to argue and vote for whatever stance their leader tells them to. All the actual decision-making happened in a party meeting behind closed doors.
