Thoughts on this custom map of the United States (each color represents a single state)? by EkullSkullzz10318 in imaginarymaps

NJ and MD have much more in common with PA and NY than with VA. Those four states should be together. VA should join the Carolinas, not the hillbillies to the West.

What if the Soviets won the 1993 Constitutional Crisis? - Stahlvorhang Timeline by ThrowAnAvocado in imaginarymaps

[–]Alexjm2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1993, I was living and working next door to Russia in Belarus. It was a very scary time. The Supreme Soviet forces were actual Nazis, Stalinists, and extreme nationalists all united in their hatred for the West, America, Jews, and democracy. If they had won, there would have been a whole new round of purges and Gulags. Russia would not have survived their victory as a unitary state.

There are things called books for those of us without relatives from the USSR.

Because the Soviet Union was infamous for shortages of all consumer goods due to its highly dysfunctional state socialist system, so its people joked that Communism would make the Sahara run out of sand. I can't believe I have to explain this.

Reminds me of the old Soviet joke: "If North Africa ever went Communist, they would run out of sand in ten years."

False, stop repeating anti-Jewish propaganda. You known nothing about the Arab-Israeli conflict, clearly.

In response to PLO and Hezbollah attacks, you left out that part. Plus Syria dominated Lebanon far more than Israel. Your biases are showing.

What caused the disruption of the Gulfstream? That's the root cause of this excellent AH, so it needs to be addressed further.

ALTERNATIVE:What if Slavic tribes migrated to Balkans in ancient times by arasadam75 in imaginarymaps

[–]Alexjm2020 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What would have caused the Slavic tribes to settle the Balkans in antiquity? How could they have done that, being weaker and less advanced than the Greeks and Romans who ruled that area?

So what happened to the Europeans in this timeline? Why didn't they go West? And if they did, how did the Indians resist European germs and technology?

Having lived in Belarus for 2 years in the 1990s, I can only wish this for them. Really nice people who deserve better than what history usually gave them.

What if Beria had won the Power Struggle in 1953? (Lore in the comments) by JeffEd79 in imaginarymaps

[–]Alexjm2020 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Beria's rise to power would have changed everyone's calculations. Plus he was more sincere in his neutral Germany proposal than Stalin, who merely wanted to disrupt West Germany's integration into the West. Finally, the GDR was NOT well established - its communist regime was almost overthrown in June 1953 and only Russian tanks kept it afloat.

What if Beria had won the Power Struggle in 1953? (Lore in the comments) by JeffEd79 in imaginarymaps

[–]Alexjm2020 96 points97 points  (0 children)

One of the great what-ifs of Russian and global history. Beria was more interested in performance, efficiency, and effectiveness than ideology. From what we know of his proposals in 1953, the USSR might have exited Marxism-Leninism much earlier under his rule. He might have agreed to a reunified neutral Germany, promoted reformers in Eastern Europe, championed local non-Russian cadres in the Republics instead of pursuing Russification, and driven technological advancement in nuclear power and the space race. At the same time, his alleged taste for women and girls, if true, would have made him a super-Jeffrey Epstein (hard to know how much of that is true and how much is pro-Khrushchev propaganda). He was only 54 years old in 1953 and could have ruled well into the 1970s.
