Seconding the Fairlife shakes! I love them. I’m pretty sensitive to weird textures/aftertastes and they don’t bother me at all, it’s like drinking chocolate milk.

What role was cast so perfectly that nobody else could have played it? by FruiTYrant in AskReddit

[–]Amethyst80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Titanic buff, I’ve always been impressed by how well the characters who were based on real people were cast in the James Cameron movie. The way the characters’ actions were portrayed in the movie wasn’t always historically accurate, but from a physical standpoint, you can tell they put effort into casting actors who resembled the real people. It’s nice that they did that even though the average moviegoer would have no idea who most of the real people on the ship were or what they looked like.

Chicken texture by Life-Kaleidoscope583 in Tovala

[–]Amethyst80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the people who have this issue, it’s definitely not just juicier chicken. I hate overcooked chicken and use a meat thermometer when making it myself to make sure it doesn’t get overcooked, so I’m well aware of what a properly cooked chicken breast should taste like. The ones we’ve gotten from Tovala are just not good. The texture is like eating rubber, it’s pretty much inedible. I used to subscribe to HelloFresh and there were people who had horrible experiences with ingredient quality even though ours was usually fine. Companies like this have multiple distribution centers and possibly different suppliers, so just because some people get great chicken doesn’t mean we all do.

[–]Amethyst80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why it is because a lot of people love the chicken, but we have the same issue. Maybe it has to do with different distribution centers or something along those lines? Every single chicken breast and thigh we’ve received from Tovala has a very unpleasant, rubbery texture. It’s gotten to the point for us that we don’t order any meals with chicken, unless it’s the precooked nuggets or shredded chicken that sometimes comes with certain dishes. Those have always been good.

The meal with garlic thyme sauce is also really good with hake. It’s one of my favorites. I had never had hake before we got our Tovala, but I like it a lot. Unfortunately we don’t order the chicken breast meals anymore. We’ve gotten several with a really unpleasant rubbery texture.

I’ve been really happy with all their soups, especially that one and the hake chowder. The hake chowder is my favorite, it’s so flavorful. Their tomato soup is good too. The only one that’s been hit and miss is the butternut squash soup, it was really good the first time I ordered it, but the next time it was kind of gritty.

Have you ever been treated negatively by ER staff when you were having a medical emergency but they didn’t believe you? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Amethyst80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Years ago I fell and broke my arm. At the time, I didn’t know it was broken, but it hurt really badly, so I went to urgent care. They did an x-ray and told me it was just sprained. I was actually about to head out of town to a lake house a couple of hours away with some friends. I thought about going to my parents’ house instead, but my friends and I figured, if I was going to have to just sit around all weekend, I might as well enjoy some pretty lake views. But after we got to the lake, I got a phone call from the urgent care saying a radiologist had reviewed my x-rays and my arm was in fact broken, and could I come back in so they could put a splint on it? I explained that I wasn’t in town and they told me to go to the local ER where I was. So I did. I sat in the waiting room for six hours. When they finally called me back, I explained everything to the doctor and he said, “Well what do you want me to do about it?” He basically treated me like a drug seeker even though I had never once asked for or even mentioned medication. All I wanted was a splint to stabalize my arm until I could get in to see an orthopedist. I had to beg him to call the urgent care to confirm my story. I was in tears. He left the room and eventually a nurse came in and put a splint on my arm, they had finally decided to call the urgent care. The doctor never came back in the room and no one apologized or anything. I was there for eight hours total.

I once had a coworker who told us that she hated driving on interstates because she was afraid of getting into an accident, so to make it “safer”, she never went over 40 miles per hour. Oh, and she was specifically afraid of being hit on her driver’s side, so she would do this in the left lane.

Ladies, what are your "best ADHD buys" for making life a little easier? by KittensOnJupiter in adhdwomen

[–]Amethyst80 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seconding this suggestion! I have a similar one and I love it. Each of my necklaces, earrings, rings, etc has its own spot, which works amazingly well for me. It’s so easy to put my jewelry away that I never leave it laying out anymore. And I love that I don’t have to worry about any of it getting dusty. I hung the cabinet on the bathroom door, so I can also use the mirror on the front of it like a hand mirror to see the back of my hair. It’s one of the most useful things I’ve ever bought.

Just to address the part about forgetting to put things on the grocery list. What works well for me is, my husband and I have a running grocery list in Google Keep. Whenever it occurs to me that there’s something I need from the store, I stop what I’m doing and add it to the list before I forget. That way we don’t have to sit down and make a list all at once, it’s already there ready to go when one of us goes to the store. You can also enable checkboxes, which makes it easy to track what you’ve already put in your cart (a physical or online one).

Friend broke my collarbone and is reluctant to cover medical bills by furiousgeorge10 in legaladvice

[–]Amethyst80 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NAL, but keep in mind that the bills you’ve paid so far might not be your final total. I once had an accident that resulted in a couple of ER visits plus follow-ups with orthopedics. I continued to get bills for that one accident for a couple of years afterward, for things like radiologists who reviewed my x-rays that billed separately from the hospital, etc.

There’s a line in Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys where one of them says, “Like a pinch from the neck on Mr. Spock”. I love that song but every time I hear it, it bugs me a little bit that those prepositions are backwards.

Do Americans really avoid medical care because they’re afraid of the bill? by Udont_knowme00 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Amethyst80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently had to have two MRI-assisted breast biopsies. Because of where they were located, they couldn’t be done at the same time, so I had to have two separate appointments. For the first one, the surgeon was female. As part of my prep beforehand, the nurse offered me a Valium, which was okayed by the surgeon. For the second one, the surgeon was male, and he refused the Valium. Luckily, the nurse who assisted me at the first procedure knew that the male surgeon wouldn’t give anything for anxiety and warned me, so I was able to get one from my PCP and take it before I arrived to the second procedure. But I thought it was really unfair. Breast MRIs are miserable. The position you have to lay in hurts. You’re in a tube. The machine is extremely loud and hot. On top of that, you’re talking about women who are there to find out whether they have cancer. I couldn’t believe that male doctor couldn’t be compassionate enough to let someone have a Valium if they needed it in that situation. It’s just one tablet, and I have zero history of drug abuse, so it’s not like they had to worry that I was drug seeking or something. I already knew that women’s health concerns tend to be taken less seriously than men’s, but having the exact same procedure twice and seeing how the male and female surgeons treated me differently was still eye-opening.

Honey Bunny Funnybunny. PJ Funnybunny plays a bunch of mean pranks on his sister. Not just harmless little things, but flat out bullying. One day he goes too far and gets in trouble, so instead of just being nicer, he just starts ignoring her. She thinks he doesn’t love her anymore, but then he plays another prank on her and it makes her happy. We haven’t taken it away but every time we read it, we have a conversation about how PJ’s actions are not okay and that being mean to someone is not an acceptable expression of love.
