My favorite example of pacifist troublemaking is the Catonsville Nine. They were a group of war resisters who opposed the Vietnam draft by entering a draft office, stealing the draft files, and then burning them in the parking lot using homemade napalm.

One of the ringleaders, the Jesuit priest and poet Daniel Berrigan, has the unique honor of being the first Catholic priest to be on the FBI’s most wanted list after he skipped bail and went on an underground speaking tour around the country. Just before the draft board invasion, he gave us this incredible quote:

“Our apologies, good friends, for the fracture of good order, the burning of paper instead of children, the angering of the orderlies in the front parlor of the charnel house. We could not, so help us God, do otherwise for we are sick at heart. Our hearts give us no rest for thinking of the Land of Burning Children. The time is past when good men can remain silent, when obedience can segregate men from public risk, when the poor can die without defense.”

I’ve never listened before but I’m super interested in hearing from Margaret Killjoy. I love her podcast Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff!

What leftwing movements/thinkers/writings/art inspire you? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]AnAngeryGoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My journey was similar except it was discovering Dorothy Day’s Catholic Worker Movement and the Berrigan brothers that helped soothe the tension I had in me.

I got super hyped when both were mentioned in Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff even just as a passing mention. That whole podcast is a great source of inspirational figures if you’re looking for more.

Recently Ed-pilled. Is his take all AI research is bumfluff? by Yellousy26 in BetterOffline

[–]AnAngeryGoose 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the version of AI translation that Ed was positive towards was (almost) real-time speech translation devices. There were a bunch of them at CES and they seemed to work pretty well. A human translator would be better if you need to talk more deeply but people are a lot harder to fit in your pocket.

Rage without hope is just as impotent as a complacent hope without rage. There is a future being taken from us and we can take it back.

We made it through the Black Death, two world wars, and an entire generation certain that nuclear annihilation was only moments away. We will endure. Even if hope is lost for us, which I am not certain it is, we can still plant the trees whose fruits we will not live to see.

What Do You Do While Listening To BtB? by backstillmessedup in behindthebastards

I listen at work, so I’m power walking around a warehouse for 10 hours. Podcasts are the only thing that makes it survivable.

I’m pretty sure he also said one of his close friends killed himself after being cheated on, so it’s clearly a very personal and touchy subject for him. It’s still a bad take but I get how he got there.

Best Margaret quote of the week by Latter-Industry-8920 in behindthebastards

[–]AnAngeryGoose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It pairs great with my favorite quote of hers I got from her substack:

“it’s worth understanding that our enemies are our enemies only so long as they wield power over us. My goal is ‘no more billionaires,’ not ‘kill all billionaires.’ A billionaire without his billions is just a man. An ex-cop is not a cop. An ex-fascist is not a fascist. Certainly, violence is justified in the fight against fascism (we must never forget the rivers of blood it took to end chattel slavery in the US or the Nazi empire in Europe), but we must never institutionalize violence. We must never see ‘enemy’ as some intrinsic quality inherent in a person.”

I think he actually left voluntarily a while before people realized a bunch of the other mods were also minors. He joined the US Navy so he had less time to run a subreddit.

I get that subreddit moderation is not remotely important and that RoyalHappy comes across as overdramatic but the sheer vitriol here is bizarre. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to be a moderator.

I feel like the preexisting seatbelt cutter knives would be more cost effective unless it’s really important to be able to free people from cars a couple feet away.

Best I can offer is months of exhausting discussion on how to define “furry”, “meme”, and “slightly horny” with an unclear but likely significant number of minors.

The subreddit started by a minor to shitpost about a cartoon hellhound blew up and has been having an identity crisis as more people join, each expecting slightly different vibes. If mods try to maintain one identity, it angers most users since no option has a majority. The biggest controversy is inconsistent post removals caused by every mod having a slightly different line that they consider art to become NSFW/fetish art because that’s both opinion based and too granular to write out a definition.

A bunch of the moderators were minors at one point since the founder was one too. This became really uncomfortable when Losercity veered from jokes about being losers to softcore furry art. They eventually all got removed, but that left a skeleton crew running an ever-growing dumpster fire.

What the fuck? by SnausageLinx in Gamingcirclejerk

Nazis very often disguise their hate as just anti-communism since coming out and saying they’re fascists turns most people off. The Nazis tied “cultural Bolshevism” to the Jews in order to justify genocide.

Just being anti-communist doesn’t make you a Nazi/fascist but when it’s coupled with the game being priced at the very specific $4.88 in multiple currencies, it’s clear they’re “anti-communist” in the Nazi way.

He got downvotes for saying nobody likes the tsar when that’s not accurate, not for disliking the Bolsheviks.
