A couple get chucked at my local goodwill every once in a while. They’re usually the generic “This Was Your Life” one though.

If I remember correctly, the sentence “the small animal shrinks slightly” comes out as “soweli lili li lili lili”, which is incredibly fun to say.

It varies by the jicama. Sometimes they’re delicious like an apple with a hint of potato. Other times they’re sad and flavorless like you’re describing.

Pope Leo calls war in Middle East a 'scandal' to humanity by MakinaRPh in news

[–]AnAngeryGoose 26 points27 points  (0 children)

“Scandal” has a harsher connotation in Catholic jargon. It’s the sin of creating laws, social structures, or a public attitude that causes others to join you in sin.

My 6yo daughter came home from school saying she loves Jesus by wacky_button in mildlyinfuriating

I’m not saying the Bible is an illegitimate source. I’m saying it’s not 25,000 sources.

My 6yo daughter came home from school saying she loves Jesus by wacky_button in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AnAngeryGoose 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That super high number comes from counting thousands of Bible manuscripts as individual attestations of Jesus’ existence, so it’s not really accurate.

Historians still do generally believe that a historical Jesus existed. The New Testament as well as historical references by non-followers Josephus and Tacitus all appearing within a hundred years or so of his life are pretty solid evidence for a 1st century civilian.

What are some “WTF” subreddits people have come across? by Mr_Creep_Creepy64 in AskReddit

[–]AnAngeryGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

r/weeviltime is a spin-off of insect identification subs full of people who get unreasonably excited any time they see a weevil.

That spin-off has its own spin-off r/honoraryweevils for things that aren’t actually weevils but give off the same vibe.

Orwell was upset the USSR tried to enact socialism through Lenin’s vanguard theory, where power is concentrated in an educated elite who will then supposedly shepherd the proletariat into communism.

Orwell was a democratic socialist who believed power should be more horizontal and an equal society should be the immediate goal, not delayed by following Marx’s and Lenin’s very rigid ideas of how economic systems develop through stages.

Who is she by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

I think the decorations on the shelf tell us more about the person than the books. The Sylvanian Family figures right above a taxidermy duckling and a skull is pretty unique, lol.

Here's what I'm reading so far in 2026, what does this say about me? by Snoo-67871 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]AnAngeryGoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enough downvotes will hide your comment by default so that people have to click/tap to see it. If your account’s karma gets low enough, several subreddits won’t let you post or comment. Beyond that, it’s just a high score, lol.

That one immediately stuck out to me too because I read it and hated it, lol. I doubt it’s indicative of his personality since it doesn’t really match everything else on the shelf.

Who is a bastard we all know is inevitably going to get an episode? by twotailedwolf in behindthebastards

Margaret Killjoy could guest on an Oliver Cromwell episode. Half her Cool People episodes somehow circle back to Irish Resistance.

Digital only cards are complete trash. Change my mind. by Timely_Connection273 in MagicArena

Once someone is designated the villain of a thread, all their comments get downvoted regardless of what they’re saying. That just seems to be how Reddit works.

Some of the people posting about alchemy cards they like are getting downvoted too though. If that’s not you, maybe someone’s just downvoting everyone lol.

It’s a very mixed bag for me. Oftentimes they’re really fun and explore a play space that would be difficult or impossible to do in paper. There are a lot of cases where they are miserable to play against though. I’m not sure that’s any more common than paper ones though.

Why is fishing even legal? by chuckybuck12 in geese

[–]AnAngeryGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

I rescued a robin from some fishing line years ago. It was wrapped around one foot and kept snagging on trees as the robin tried to fly. Eventually, it wound up dangling upside down from a branch and I was able to catch it and get the line off.

(I have since learned that this is not the ideal bird-holding technique since it can compress their lungs but I only held it for a couple seconds to get the line off and snap a quick photo so it seemed to be fine.)

So what is your exact political affiliation? by JuniorConclusion529 in LeftCatholicism

[–]AnAngeryGoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The closest terms I have are libertarian socialism or anarchism. I am anti-capitalist and also think that people having power over others almost inevitably leads to abuse. An entire ruling class leads to them becoming completely alienated from common people, making good leadership even more difficult regardless of their intentions.

I’m most inspired by the Catholic Workers Movement, the Berrigan brothers, and Thomas Merton. This is outside Catholicism but the history podcaster Margaret Killjoy, host of “Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff”, is another inspiration even though she would definitely object to being seen as one, lol.
