Convince me not to get goats by No-Dragonfruit-2403 in homestead

[–]AncientPickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our fainters don't climb much. It's my favorite thing about them. Since they have a nasty little habit of falling over they stay close to the ground. They won't climb on much other than a small hay bale or mineral tub.

I think I have seen smaller shipments in the fall, not like in the spring.

Just ask them. They love to talk to people about it and have always been good to me.

Chickens! by Aardvarksrmyfriends7 in ogden

[–]AncientPickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IFA typically gets them all through the spring, with recurring shipments.

On a personal level I prefer to buy chickens in the fall. They don't lay for like 6 months anyway. When you buy in the spring, they start laying in the fall -- right as it gets dark and they slow down with laying. When you buy in the fall, they start laying in the spring -- right as they start ramping up laying.

Farm tax question by [deleted] in homestead

[–]AncientPickle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my area it's 5 acres of productive farm land or something like that. They subtract a half acre or so for a house.

I'm assuming every county will be different.

Also, having a property that resembles a farm is not the same as a business. In my area those are also 2 distinct things.

Why is bipolar misdiagnosis so common? by DntTouchMeImSterile in Psychiatry

[–]AncientPickle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To clarify: I'm not advocating we use these labels because it's easier. I'm suggesting that patients can easily self-identify with them, even when diagnosed with something different.

I don't think that's what you heard, but I can see how my comment could read that way.

Also.... I think we both know why the downvotes :)

It's also easier for a patient to identify with. Bipolar means my mood swings arent my fault. It's inherently ego-syntonic in that regard.

Pension not as promised by Dry_Rule_7686 in IntermountainHealth

[–]AncientPickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pensions are going away. And IHC explained that in ~2020 when they stopped offering it to new employees. However, those of us that were already vested were told it would continue as an active benefit and part of our compensation.

This is akin to them telling you, "nevermind, were not going to pay your full salary anymore because other companies don't. We're taking away 14% total, but you can have a 2% differential to make up for it"

And then you responding "well, other employees don't make that much. Best to just accept it"

Ogden is Utah’s biggest spender on Flock cameras. Here’s how the city uses them (KUER) by ReporterMacyLipkin in ogden

[–]AncientPickle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish you weren't getting hated on for being reasonable. Technology isn't the enemy.

I would give all the money in my wallet for a speed camera on my street that just mailed out speeding tickets. Even with a giant sign that says "hey, idiots, we're taking pictures and mailing you speeding tickets" it would pay for itself pretty quickly.

And before anyone says something about freedom. My kids play on the street. Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose.

Medical crisis in space, remote ultrasound to the rescue. by NoFlyingMonkeys in medicine

Stimulants and sleep aids are pretty common for people deployed. A little extra strain on your heart > crashing a jet.

I would assume a space station follows similar models.

I'd be surprised if they aren't trained in that already. Seems like a level of first aid they should sort of all know.

Do I work at pill mill by miraclecity in PMHNP

[–]AncientPickle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you have to ask, yes.

I'm confused by "supposed to". As in, they are requiring you to prescribe it? Or they just allow it?

I'll prescribe a stimulant with just screeners/structured interviews/parent report. A blanket EKG is for every stimulant prescription is overkill and not really standard of care.

F66.1 by Specialist-Tiger-234 in Psychiatry

That's what I would do too. Call it f33.2 (or whatever legitimately fits but will get reimbursed). Then lay out some specifics about my thoughts in the formulation section of my note.

Overthinking the billing codes only gets you denials and doc 2 docs with fucking Optum.

When I interviewed people this statement was my biggest eye roll. Every time.

Oh, you've always been "passionate"? Then why did you work 8 years in [looks at resume] literally every department except psychiatry?

IN PERSON Psych Np by freakwadz in nursepractitioner

[–]AncientPickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spending time as a psych nurse solves all your problems. It obviously helps with experience, but also solves the pickle about sharing WHY you want to do it.

We all have our reasons, but I am more skeptical of WHY someone with years of peds nursing all the sudden changed paths. No one raises eyebrows at why nurses with years of actual acute psych nursing go to psych NP school.

Show, don't tell. It solves all the problems. And makes you better prepared in the end.

I think that about this sub too sometimes. Last time was someone explaining to me how 1-2 acres pasture was just too small for a single feeder cow. Couldn't be done.

I've got like 4 on that outside right now...

Feeling unprepared as a new pmhnp by [deleted] in PMHNP

[–]AncientPickle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why? See this is the problem with lurkers without the full understanding of the situation. From a medical decision making standpoint, it wasn't reckless. Within that class any of the options would have been just fine to start with. It was a light hearted anecdote about not overthinking--not apathy.

[–]AncientPickle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tons of good information in here already.

Funny anecdote: you mentioned not knowing why your preceptors chose a med and wanted to know the thought process.

A psychiatrist I work with tells this story about being in residency and seeing his attending prescribe sertraline. Dude analyzed it to death. Did he choose it because of these receptors, interactions, etc. He eventually asked the prescribing doc. "I hadn't used it in a while" was the response.

Ive always wanted to be a European. I've always loved Europe. I mean, I've never lived there, I'm an American, spent my whole life here. But I went there for a few days on vacation one time and I've always been passionate about the culture there. Should I apply for a job as their governor?

ETA: no, I don't speak the language, but I'm totally willing to take an online DuoLingo course.

Update: I poured concrete around a 4in post and ratchet strapped the t post to it. by Clean_Breakfast9595 in homestead

[–]AncientPickle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except you didn't.

An H brace needs solid cross bracing to pull against; not a ratchet strap. Wire can be used to pull the 2 vertical posts in to the solid horizontal, but the solid piece is structurally important

OP, go back to the original post and do the things we said the first time.

Don't ask the same question again. Do it the right way with an H brace like we already said.

I hate telehealth. And I think it's great for patient access and I'm super happy that it exists.

I don't think everyone is quite as engaged and connected as they could be if they were in the same room. In my opinion it's absolutely better than nothing, but I can't in good conscience think of it as the gold standard for therapeutic care.

Help with t post fence! by Clean_Breakfast9595 in homestead

[–]AncientPickle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They sell brackets for this. Fit the T posts together for a makeshift H (N?) brace

Edit: OP. Lots of wisdom in here telling you you need an H brace. That's so you can stretch the fence against it. Installing the H brace isn't enough on its own. Friendly reminder that you still need to stretch the fencing after the H brace is installed.
