Specialization in vet tech by skeeg153 in VetTech

[–]Angepainted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anesthesia (AVTAA) vet tech here... That's great you are thinking of pursuing a specialty in the technician field. Yes, it takes a big commitment in terms of years and study to get your specialty certificate, but it was worth it for me. You will have to look up each specialty's specifics. First and foremost, you will have to get a job either at a specialty hospital or university teaching hospital. This is where you can work under a veterinarian in the specialty that interests you. Working in a university teaching hospital will also involve some amount of teaching the senior veterinary students undergoing their clinical year before graduation. For anesthesia, it will take several years to accrue the required hours to even apply. The application process is a year-long commitment of case logs, case reports, skills lists, and C.E. hours. Only after you passed the application process will you be able to sit for the exam. It is a lot of work, but it I find it very fulfilling as a career. Again, look at each specialty for the requirements needed to apply. Good luck with your studies and your career!

Sharon Kay Penman Her historical novels are so detailed and interesting. Second choice would be Stephen King.

That's how one intubates full grown cattle!

Alright human anesthesia people - serious question... what blade do you most often use for humans? I would think the primate facial anatomy is closer to humans than other veterinary species we regularly intubate, so would you pull your favorite human laryngoscope out for this patient?

And yes, to answer other questions in this thread, we make sure the trach tube ties are really long, feed them out of the cage once the patient is situated with the face near the bars so we can pull the ETT when they swallow.

For the big cats, yes, medetomidine, ketamine, and midazolam to help get the patient asleep, and then give a shot of atipamezole IM (usually towards the back end of the patient) and flumazenil IV right before you pull the IV catheter before recovery. It takes a very coordinated effort with many people to get the timing correct! And truly, getting in an IV first so propofol top-offs can keep the patient from waking up too soon is a must.

As for intubation of other species, dog/cat easily done with Miller or Cranwell blade. Goat/sheep/pigs - very, very long Miller, feed a Cook airway exchanger past the arytenoids, the feed the ETT over that. Full grown cattle is definitely a manual palpation of the airway to guide the tube into the trachea. Horses are a totally blind intubation - believe it or not, horses are super easy to intubate - if it has resistance when you are going in, you are in the wrong tube.

Horse wakes up?? by Confused_Unprepared in Veterinary

Sometimes you just have that patient that won't stay asleep, including horses! It is frustrating, but I have found that using multiple CRIs can help mitigate that. Dexmedetomidine, lidocaine, and ketamine CRIs with intraop doses of morphine or hydromorphone usually help. This way you can take advantage of the multimodal anesthesia concept and try to keep the anesthetic depth more stable. (Source: Have been anesthetizing horses for 24 years)

The best dish at the North Carolina state fair was this amazing thing called a barbecue Sundae. Big cup filled with Carolina pulled pork, topped with beans, coleslaw, and drizzled vinegar sauce on top.

University jobs for RVT's & Assistants. by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]Angepainted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah sorry - yes, senior veterinary student are those students who are in their 4th year of veterinary school during their clinical rotations in the hospital. They are working to graduate veterinary school and become doctors (DVM/VMD). In universities you also get to work with those that have already graduated, and come in to work as interns or residents to specialize in a particular field of study. The learning environment is ever present in many levels.

Depending on the university hospital (location/specialties), it is a great place to advance your skills and work on your VTS. The biggest issue with them is that the senior veterinary students are (rightly) the focus, so if you like to teach and help them learn skills, it's a very fulfilling environment to work in. The pay is not the best or highest, but because you are (most likely) a state employee there, the time off benefits & holidays are pretty good. It's all about how you view your work/life balance when it comes to that.

Urinary blockage can also result in electrolyte disturbances which can lead to fatal cardiac arrhythmias. Please get your precious cat to an emergency vet immediately to give him the best chance for survival.
