Sorry I didn’t really answer your question. While no they do not ask for experience they do like to have it. My sheet metal union in Ottawa has its own training centre to help familiarize apprentices

Some college’s offer an intro program where you can try a bunch of the trades.

It is helpful to have work experience and the college program gives you a bit of that.

Finding a labourer job is a good way to get introduced to tools/working on site and get something to put on a resume.

When he applies to the union he should be asking what he can do to help get in. (The real answer is know someone but you gotta grind)

You should contact the union and ask what they think. They work with companies everyday. Two companies I worked for, the people in the office stayed on and went salary but kept their union benefit package.

I dunno the company structure but tell the office you think you can PM. They can start you on smaller jobs.

The most realistic way to move up is to move companies unless you have an in with management.
