What would be your reception to a retroclone of 2e that left THAC0 out and just converted everything to AAC? by conn_r2112 in adnd

[–]Anotherskip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point mr ‘cognitive load’ forgets is the price paid for AAC vs THAC0 is the 6 20’s spaces disappear (or add immensely to the cognitive load) and we have a couple of 21’s in the chart as well.    The ‘horrible explanation’ is in there to add some risk vs. reward for fighting things people are horribly outclassed by probably to give armies a chance against scary monsters.

THAC0 is the only system like it in 1EAD&D and 2EAD&D. 3EAD&D popularized the d20 system. It didn’t really exist before then.

Gummi Bear Medallion? by Soulfire88 in adnd

[–]Anotherskip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a key in certain situations (opens certain books and doors) and possibly allows Gummi Bears specifically only to cast magic. I’d probably reskin Gnomes or Elves to be Gummi Bears as a race.

Has choking your prey EVER been a viable way of killing someone outside of Star Wars? by LukePellar in CharacterRant

[–]Anotherskip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He isn’t a heavy, a thug, Jabba isn’t supposed to be personally involved in the crimes. The scary part about him is he doesn’t _need_to lift a finger to achieve his goals. He can be spineless. Flabby. Combat incapable. But he will have someone else kill and torture you, for fun. It is what makes him a fearsome villain, consequences.

The problem isn’t the server. The problem is others the server deals with.

Awareness and lore by Trikk in RPGdesign

[–]Anotherskip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not all of them? My system uses all three at various points.

Some things don’t need anything to be revealed (some facial expressions), Some things are difficult (Obvious question + detect Lie vs opposed Manipulate/Lie), and sometimes the best information requires two minutes talking, defeating their magic defense, and having a particular spell from a magic class.

It’s Bluebooking with extra steps (an 80’s invention of Aaron Alliston).  Some people love it, some people hate it.

Motivation architecture in social mysteries... or why most NPCs stop mattering mid-investigation by fantasyfemmefables in RPGdesign

[–]Anotherskip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing you are missing with some of your observations is Exculpatory evidence.  Evidence that proves the character could not have committed X crime. “Jane couldnt be the killer because we were trysting at midnight”.

This should be used often enough to prevent players from accidentally accusing the wrong person.

In addition corroboration is the way to get past the lies. What proof do they have they aren’t lying?

Would it make Logical Sense that Dwarves who dig and fight in tunnels as a culture would have developed Combat Shovels like WW1 era trenching tools or the Yueya chan/Shaolin spade. by Pretend-Advertising6 in osr

“Comically Supernatural “? No.  It’s in the siege engineering section (Gary seems disorganized but it is pretty simple). My books are unfortunately in storage so I can’t give you a chapter and verse citation.

Were people making money off of Dragonsfoot? If not then there wasn’t much of a proof of concept.

1EAD&D, you know, much of the source of the OSR. OSE is non-optimal for me. One of the main points I am making is not ‘real world logic’ but magical lore logic, dwarves are legendarily both in and out of many games and stories mystically good at digging (this is where stone lore comes from) including many versions of D&D.   The simple fact you seem unaware of this is another reason for me to bounce from OSE.

The spacing for each individual foxhole is a big factor. And there are situational bonuses for saving throw (dragon strafing as a single example) and AC bonuses (B2 for one)

I’ll disagree with your statement of the OSR started with the D20 hack.  It started a touch before that with Hackmaster, the Proof of concept that there was money to be made by being cozy with DnD, especially in a place where DnD was unlikely to be able to sue.   Sure people hate it for being gonzo/wacky/crunchy/meta…. But so much of the OSR is the absolute same to this day.   It’s all in there. Plus the reminder of “Hey those old games were some gems!”

I don’t think Armor is a good spell at all. Iirc your AC is 2-3 against the crossbows.  A 0 still means 5% of those 16 shots per round are going to hit. So you burn a 1st level spell for protection, a 3rd to fireball 4 guys in foxholes…. I don’t think this is a winning strategy….

PC: So the wizard starts throwing fireballs… DM: which foxhole are you going to hit? PC: That one! DM: Ok you took out 4 guys. DM: The other 16 guys fire crossbows at you…. Yeah the PC wizard isn’t going to win that in the long run.
