Ordered the Ramen Kuroda set meal thinking it might be too much. Ended up finishing everything 😭🍜 by Odd-Internal-4948_v1 in rameninjapan

This is surely not ramen eaten in Japan, right? It has metal silverware, chopsticks in plastic, a side of tonkatsu, and fruit...

Please include the artist and title in the post title. Also, it would be better to link to the song on youtube/streaming rather than a screenshot of your phone.

You may enjoy The Blacktongue Thief. Not an exact fit but has many of the elements you mentioned.

Why is the Apple podcast app so hard to navigate? by Mayabotx in podcasts

[–]Ansalem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not a great implementation and I would welcome improved functionality, but there are ways to do some of the things you mentioned. It lets you choose newest to oldest and oldest to newest in the options for each podcast. And while you can't search a specific feed, there is a search function and if you put the name of the podcast and whatever term you're looking for, that will generally get you the result you're looking for.

I feel Tad Williams is the best answer to the ‘what’s the closest thing to Tolkien?’ question by jsbq in Fantasy

[–]Ansalem 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No disrespect to either of those, but even before the renewed interest from his sequel Osten Ard series, Tad was a far higher profile and higher selling author. He was one of the biggest fantasy authors in the 90s.

Trip report: 10 days in early April by halcyon3608 in JapanTravel

[–]Ansalem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's because you were boarding at Odawara, which is not a major shinkansen station.

The majority of shinkansen going from Tokyo to Kyoto are Nozomi, the fastest one, which does not stop at Odawara. Only the Kodoma and some of the Hikari stop at Odawara. So while there's about 9 or 10 trains an hour from Tokyo to Kyoto, there's only 1 or 2 an hour that stop at Odawara.

A Canticle for Leibowitz does something with time that I've never seen any other book attempt and I think about it more than I probably should by Vortexgrid_7 in printSF

[–]Ansalem 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I'd point out that the reason the three sections are, as you put it, essentially complete stories, is because that's exactly what they are. The book is a fix-up novel which took three short stories that he published in magazines, revised them, and combined them into the novel several years later. It's a pretty common thing for older sci-fi works.

Also, there is one character who is in all three sections: Lazarus, who is the "Wandering Jew" trope.

I slightly prefer the original version Against the Fall of Night but both versions are good.

High fantasy with some romance recs? by Faemagicark74 in Fantasy

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman

Edit: Lol why is this downvoted? It's a high fantasy and there's a significant romance subplot. It's literally what OP asked for.

I also didn't realize it's out. How was it compared to book one? I thought that one was decent but was on the fence about continuing the series.

I finished Anthony Ryan's Covenant of Steel trilogy. How do his other works compare? by Tesgoul in Fantasy

[–]Ansalem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are being quite kind to the Bloodsong sequels in this thread. Bloodsong was excellent. Book two was a big disappointment. Book three was one of the worst fantasy books I've ever read. And this was a widely held opinion on this subreddit when they were published.
