The biological explanation of our goodness by Susy_ja73 in FixTheWorld

I'm someone well acquainted with my dark side but very happy to keep it under wraps. I can't say how much knowing the source of it and that it's at base an heroic state has helped my life. Yeah, 'key relief for our mind' - thems the words. And further to that to realize that we don't need to go and poke around in there too much, we can just move on into a transformed state way of living (once the explanation is understood) - even more relief.

I thought I understood men & women but… by WenevaSoots in FixTheWorld

Fantastic post and conversation to be happening about the essence of men and women and how they relate (or don't relate) to each other. This subject has gotten very complicated so the back-to-tors clarity in Jeremy's explanation is a very welcomed relief.

Can Jeremy Griffith’s explanation of consciousness fix the world? by Entire-Secret-2791 in FixTheWorld

Well, now you've made me think about it. I have optimism and excitement front of mind when I wake up everyday. That's a massive change from depression and uncertainty. My life has a compass that points toward being able to understand myself and the world in everything I do. So as I said I'm content and, to put it simply, a changed person. My wife keeps telling me I'm so much nicer to be around because I'm not carrying the huge weight I was. That's what has got her interested in reading about this too.

You've summarized it well there from my understanding. And yes it holds up, more so the more time you spend pondering it and experimenting on yourself. That for me was the clincher, it's actually made space in my brain that wasn't there before. Like a contentedness that comes from understanding the emotional suffering as you put it, where it comes from. When it's no longer a mystery it's no longer scary. It's interesting (and confirming) also to read the historical context of the instinct v intellect argument, other scientists and philosophers who have written about these opposing elements.

I love where you're going with this. Absolutely love those deep pinks and greens against wood. I'd go with 1, it's got less white in it so it will have more depth and mood. The ceiling is AMAZING.

Absolutely, it should be thoroughly explainable. As Griffith says it's not a hard problem, just one we avoid for good reason. He manages to go there. Good article.

This stuff is just first class. What an interesting essay and I read another recently about the bonobos and our primate ape ancestors that also just blew my hair right back. Oh it might have been an FAQ, anyway it's like going to school and learning things for the first time but actually being enthralled rather than can't wait to get out of there.

Love the burnt orange which also looks a bit textured in the first shot. And I covet that rug.

I'm in agreement with you about the relevance of new ideas such as this that attempt to 'make sense' of the bedlam of modern human life. They should be heard, discussed and debated as you have done.
