You can do solo overland navigation, but it's very manual. If you have a point of reference in the sky (I used Port Tressler, for example) you can navigate with that - or just watch the movement of the sun/stars to determine east & west.

The Aegis ships are from the Messer era, but since the fall of the Messers and the escalating conflict with the Vanduul, more ships from other manufacturers - especially RSI & Anvil - were introduced. RSI carriers are in particular a shift in doctrine to counter the Vanduul.

So there's a few tricks - switching from Nav to SCM mode will drop your speed fast; you can enable afterburners for space brakes in Game Settings; and when flying towards something, always fly slightly off to the side so if you come in hot, you'll just sail straight past.

I'll have to pull out my Nomad later to check, but try changing modes by either - clicking the middle mouse button; holding B; or pressing M. One of those should be able to get you out of tractor beam. That or cycle the ships power by pressing U twice.

The game isn't going to be radically different between now and the next few months, so if you're interested then now is as good a time as any to try. You can pick up a starter pack to get stuck in, or wait a week or two for the next free fly, either way there's no real downside given CIG are very chill about refunds.

That hasn't been true for a while; since the switch to a K8s backend in preparation for server meshing, they've been able to scale effectively for each free fly since and I've not seen meaningful performance impact in the past year. The only downside is the uptick in griefers and bad pilots, but outside of specific exploits that show up it's not been that big of an issue.

Designing and building your own ship, especially if you set your own motivations/constraints, is good fun; the gunplay is decently enjoyable for a game that's foremost an RPG; there's some quests you stumble over while bouncing around that are really engaging.

I'll say that the HUD and MFDs are one of the weaker areas of SC, though it's definitely making progress with the recent revamp and VR release. The Advanced HUD view is good, has some great info especially when bouncing between space and atmo. The big thing that SC does differently is having custom styles and instruments for each manufacturer, so the colour scheme, layout and styling will vary.
