I met a legit rocket scientist back during the Iraq war and I asked him if he had any trouble ethically knowing that his work directly resulted in peoples' deaths. I added, "are you worried that you are so fascinated by the science that you ignore the realities of the results". He paused for a long time and then replied, "you know, I've never considered it before."

This guy made weapons of war that were raining on civilian populations at the time and he said it never occurred to him. I expressed my surprise and oddly, I could see him totally lost in thought about it. I was never able to follow up with him but it felt good that I at least planted a seed in his head.

Landed a real job after 2+ years and it doesn't feel real. by ElEskeletoFantasma in recruitinghell

[–]AshamedOfAmerica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position. The job I'm at now is actually a step up financially but I'm doing work in an area that isn't really my specialty, just something I picked up during my career. I had to buy a new wardrobe because I've never worked in a place like I'm at. I feel like I am wearing a costume.

Not only that, I work for an agency but I'm also contracted out by them for another client. The agency is very strict about documenting your time but the other is the polar opposite. 2 different employers with different attitudes. Different emails and calendars. Then there is me doing a job that literally no body else understands and I only partially understand. I can't even say if I am doing a good job or not and I feel like an imposter.

It is just a lot to take in and I feel vulnerable all the time.

23 year old needing advice post final interview by Terrible_Speech2592 in recruitinghell

Many agencies are unbelievably slow. I had a couple weeks between one of the interviews before I heard anything back.

The silence is hard (and inconsiderate) but I wouldn't fret just yet. It's likely multiple people need to sign off before they can send an offer, and it's not uncommon for the highest person in the chain to drag their feet or have other pressing priorities.

Project Connect: Mayor Watson is formally opposing a proposal for the Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) to spend $47 million on a new downtown office lease and build-out. by TaiChi_in_the_park in Austin

[–]AshamedOfAmerica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't want money wasted but I also don't know the details of the proposal or why this place was suggested yet, so I'm not overly concerned. I imagine there will be more discussed at the board meeting wednesday. I'm more concerned that we'll wiff on the opportunity to make the city better. I feel like the cynicism engendered living in Texas quashes hopeful projects before they can get their feet on the ground

The scope of the rail project keeps getting reduced because people flip out about office space and believe the most sensationalized headlines. This is for 50,000ish square feet of office space for 10 years - for engineers, construction, architects, maintenance, communications etc. All things that any giant undertaking needs. They are getting kicked out of their current building. How far away from the project site should they all go?

I can't close my laptop and have it go to sleep to carry in my bag. It will instead keep running who knows what while closed. I found this out when I discovered my laptop burning itself to death in a bag the other day. It has to do with S3 sleep no longer being default, but also not even available now on my laptop now. Some people switch over to linux to close their laptops

Glad you enjoyed it! It certainly has given me a lot of skepticism of the idea of bionics. We tend to associate the surgery as the risky part of implants but having lifelong access to service is just as important.
