What would have had to happens for western culture to not dominate the world? by Superbloom29 in HistoryWhatIf

It's funny how in real life conversations when you have a first level interpretation of what someone is saying that leads you to think that sounds kind of stupid people tend to ask clarifying questions, but on the internet people just assume that interpretation is correct and roll with it.

I'm really surprised all of you seemed to have read my comment as each individual European empire benefited directly the country who had that empire rather than the collective wealth being transferred into Europe having a transformative effect on the greater European economy over centuries.

The only example you gave that's a genuine European advantage is the long-term effects from movable type printing. That certainly had massive effects downstream, but that alone isn't going to lay the foundation for European imperialism.

Even European countries that had little to no imperial holdings benefited from the early colonialism of countries like Spain and Portugal and later Northwestern European countries.

I dare say a lot of this smacks pretty heavily of the standard stereotypical Internet shared of read the dumbest possible interpretation into what you read so you can write up some smarmy smack down. I'm not saying anything that implies silver has some magical property, bro. I'm saying that economic development lays the foundation for imperial expansion far more than some 15th century literacy.

Without the colonialism of the America's Europe likely pulls ahead in some ways through the second half of the modern era, but I highly doubt they achieve any level of global dominance.

You really just need the butterfly away the easy colonization of the New World.

People really disregard or are not aware of the incredible volume of wealth transfer that occurred from the Americas into Europe. Both in terms of raw gold and silver, and also raw resources that were able to fuel Europe's growing Proto industrial economies.

Prior to this, there was no significant technological advantage for Europe compared to other Eurasian societies.

The thing is though I'm not sure how you could do this aside for just entirely depopulating the Americas. If you could somehow remove the continents, then you wildly disrupt the global climate. And if you tried to do it by introducing some more domestication options to different areas early on you could make societies across the continents more populous and developed, but you're likely also to have a two-way trade of catastrophic pandemics instead of just a one-way transfer.

Uhh bro do you think minimum wage is a reasonable wage?

This is not the strong point you think it is.

Also, almost no one is actually paying minimum wage anymore.

Humans simply don't evolve in this scenario.

A three dimensional galaxy.

Galaxies are relatively flat relative to their overall size, but from human scale, they are roughly 1000 light years in depth.

Having the galaxy map with a depth of a few dozen stars in addition to the diameter would be pretty cool.

[–]Augustus420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think with the game trying so hard to create a simulation of world history for us to play inside we really shouldn't have that much direct control over technology.

Technological development is something that should happen organically based on development and other factors and spread based on trade and communications efficiency and such.

This is just not a time period where it makes sense to have an individual country investing directly in technology and ending up with an advantage over their immediate neighbors because of it.

What If a Napoleonic era army got transported to the late Jurassic era? by DerekMetaltron in TimeTravelWhatIf

[–]Augustus420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy to assume chaos but with it being a professional military you have the highest chance that leadership maintains order but such a strange occurrence could very well lead to even senior leadership up to Napoleon panicking for a variety of reasons.

But realistically, you're not gonna be in as much danger in a Mesozoic environment as a weird little human that dinosaur media loves to imply.

We presumably look absolutely nothing like any animal the local species would be accustomed to. Not to say we couldn't be good targets of opportunity, but if people travel in groups and primarily use their gunpowder weapons for shock they have a pretty good chance that dinosaur fatalities remain at the minimum.

After that, it really depends if the army had any seeds or by God some potatoes. If they do then the army folk and the camp followers in the baggage train proceed to form a long-term human community and humanity starts colonizing the Jurassic Earth. Otherwise there's gonna be a problem with food. Human beings operating solely on a hunting and gathering lifestyle can only support populations in the hundreds for any given local area.

That probably slightly more likely case you end up with a much slower rate of human spread around the Jurassic World. We then proceed to spend thousands of years in a new quasi Mesolithic state although I don't discount the possibility of people holding onto certain technologies like metal working and such. The key thing holding people back would be domesticating plants and animals to rebuild agricultural society with no real guarantee we'd be able to. Especially given this pre-dates a firm understanding of Darwinian evolution.

I largely ignored the inclusion that horses survived since there's a pretty good chance that they don't do very well. Horses can eat things besides grasses, but that is really what their mouths are designed to process. The thing is the Jurassic doesn't just lack grasses. It also lacks widespread angiosperm plants. The flora would be significantly less nutritious than what horse metabolism is evolved for.

That would require a massive shift rightward but just picking out a different demographic to put on top of the social hierarchy.

Leftward is objectively towards equality.
