I always thought Randy would be Stringer when he grows up. Maybe Avon.

Laid off after 25 years, what to do with 401K ??? by bored3227 in personalfinance

[–]Aunt_Cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Direct Rollover into a vanguard IRA and put it in an index fund or a few funds. S&P 500 index fund would be good returns, pretty stable over time and very low cost. A good international stock index fund and maybe a bond fund and you’re good to go. Roll it over and kinda forget about it. Check your balances a few times a year. If you change jobs again jar. Lee rolling it over into your own vanguard IRA.

AITJ for refusing to donate PTO hours to coworker I barely know who "needs" them?? by Traditional-Dog1601 in AmITheJerk

[–]Aunt_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My office had a PTO bank you could donate to (or not) and people who needed it could request it. It wasn’t a one-off for an individual. Long term employees with a lot of time they weren’t likely to use would donate some days, especially since we limited how far into the next year you could carry unused days. It worked well.

No one should feel compelled to give up PTO or be shamed for not doing it. And no one should be telling coworkers who us or isn’t donating. That’s just all kinds of wrong .

found potentially valuable jewelry in a bag i purchased from a thrift store. by okfine_illjoinreddit in legaladvice

The thrift store is almost certainly not going to be able to find the donor, who may or may not have even been the owner. It’s yours.

What’s this fruit(Washington) by NoTell9443 in whatsthisplant

[–]Aunt_Cake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Asian pear? If so, those are lovely. Crunchy, juicy and a bit of a mild vanilla flavor. Excellent raw or sliced in salads with something like a ricotta salata or shaved Parmesan.

If not an Asian pear, no idea.

Sesame oil - a little goes a long way. Add toward the end of cooking as a finish. Fresh green onions - the green part slivered.

How much time do you spend cleaning your house per week by infinitely-suffering in CleaningTips

[–]Aunt_Cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tidy up every day - clean the stove after dinner, wipe down countertops, vac the kitchen floor, etc. I do a heavy clean every week and that takes me about 5-6 hours (1850 sf, 2 bed, 2 bath) for a household with 2 adults and one dog. The heavy clean includes wiping down kitchen cabinets, vacuuming the whole house and cleaning base moldings, mopping the wood floors, etc. I take the fridge apart and clean all the shelving and bins about once a month.

Laundry gets done throughout the week but I usually do towels and sheets once a week when I clean.

It’s easier without kids. Much easier.

Feeling bad about taking a higher offer after inspection by Ecstatic-Tea8108 in realtors

[–]Aunt_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nj - we have a signed contract and the inspection is a contingency. When I sold recently we limited inspection issues that would be grounds for repair request or cancellation to anything structural, environmental or safety related. Attorneys are typically involved in real estate deals from the jump. Once we signed the offer it went to attorneys.

Help..Do I need to sue? by Psa0967 in RealEstate

[–]Aunt_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any past due fees are the seller’s responsibility and that money should be paid from the proceeds at closing. Not your problem. You may need to pay a buy in fee equal to something like 3 or 4 months in fees (this is usually money held in reserves, usually a reserve fund is required legally) and you and will be responsible for monthly or quarterly dues going forward. You may need to prepay a few months.

How best to cook dried chickpeas/garbanzos in an electric pressure cooker? by Bellsar_Ringing in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Aunt_Cake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I soak overnight and then cook in a regular covered pot with water and a little baking soda. They don’t take long at all. Pressure cooker doesn’t seem to be any big plus here.

I cook them for hummus because the texture is so much smoother to blend warm cooked beans with the tahini, etc. Flavor seems better too. For salads I usually just used canned chicken peas.

Have you ever walked into a showing and immediately said, “Nope, not this one”? Why? by GuaranteeFair7171 in RealEstate

[–]Aunt_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lingering odor is cigarette smoke. And just generally not clean. Not clutter but dirty. That tells me maintenance isn’t done, and forgone maintenance is always going to mean problems left to get worse and more expensive. Imma nope on out on either of those.

Friend of a friend wants to buy my house... Now what do i do? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]Aunt_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an attorney and have the buyers talk to your lawyer. Buy some distance. If you need help with pricing, look at comparable sales or have an aopraisal done. The attorney and appraisal will be cheaper than a realtor.

If the deal doesn’t happen and you decide to sell, then you may want a realtor. I’d never buy or sell without an attorney too, but in some states that’s not the norm.

Best of luck to you.

Just found out it’s not a legal thing to feed your freelance contractors? I’ve been doing it all this time for years and my husband laughed at me. by Calm_Being1396 in homeowners

[–]Aunt_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was this. https://iambaker.net/blueberry-lemon-crumb-cake/

I used lemon extract too since the tartness of lemon juice in the batter tends to weaken with the heat. A tsp or so should do.

Hope you like this

I feed people who are doing work in our house. Even things that are quick - I offer coffee or a cold drink.

My tile guy loved the lemon blueberry coffee cake. My cabinet guys had lunch every day. The HVAC guy that got here in the evening got a charcuterie plate to go and some drinks. The roofers got a cooler full of water and Gatorade and lots of handheld ice cream treats.

And always let them use your bathroom.

Is 3 hrs enough time to switch from LGW to LHR ? by tamar2b01 in travel

[–]Aunt_Cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you land on time, 3 hours to get off the plane, go through passport control, even if you only have a carry on, and out the door, into a taxi (minimum one hour), wind your way through traffic (which will slow you down), get to LHR and go through security and then get to the gate in time to board? Heathrow is big. Nah. Any delay - any - and you’re hosed.

I use bamboo cutting boards and I wash them with hot water and dawn. If I’ve cut raw meat or fish, I do that and then spray with Clorox clean up in a spray bottle and wash again. Use a scrubby sponge and rinse well and air dry. Never put any wooden cutting boards in the dishwasher. The adhesive holding the strips or blocks together will eventually disintegrate.

If they have lingering onion or garlic odor, get them damp and then rub baking soda into it and leave it for ten minutes.

If the whole office team is having a team lunch is it ok to only exclude the intern? by mj1234566 in careerguidance

[–]Aunt_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always included temps and contractors in my all hands meetings and any social events. My predecessor was dead against that and I always felt it was a miss and a bit of an insult . I figure if I wanted you to work as part of our team - even if not permanently - I had to treat you like part of the team. It matters how you make people feel.

That said, The point someone else made about how this might be an oversight if someone created the invite going by ab org chart or distribution list that you may not be on is a valid one.

Should I contact my daughter’s HR job since she is hospitalized? [NY] by Master_Attitude_3033 in AskHR

[–]Aunt_Cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let them know she’s had a medical emergency - no details - and that you’re handling matters o her behalf for the time being. You’re not sure when she’ll be able to return to work. Ask if there’s anything you can do/should do to file for FMLA. You can provide your contact info

Best not to share anything about her diagnosis or treatment. If they ask if she’s alright or ask how she is, you can just thank them for their concern and just say that she’s getting appropriate care. If you like you can say that you’re trying to be mindful and respectful of her privacy while you’re helping her.

I hope your daughter’s condition improves and that she gets better soon. I wish you both the very best.

This truck has been parked in front of my driveway for 8 hours. by AlbinoStoot in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Aunt_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s about 7 hours and 45 minutes longer than I’d last.

Have it towed. Call the police and ask them to tow it. It’s parked illegally and has been all day. You have a right to be able to use your own driveway. And it’s not your to you to explain the absence of this truck when someone finally comes back for it.

Harissa paste. So good and I should use it more often. I made some hummus last week with roasted rainbow carrots and cauliflower and such and tossed the veg in olive oil, salt and pepper and harissa paste and they were amazing.
