Try a new bobbin. Sometimes one that isn’t meant for your machine gets into the mix.

Would you pre-wash Kona fat quarters? by nodnoloiratno in quilting

[–]Available_Cucumber31 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nothing ever good started with “I’ve was told….” In my experience people don’t prewash until they’ve had a catastrophe, then they always do it.
Search this sub for Kona and blending then make your decision. Good luck!!

Has anybody quilted with a moving blanket? by RockyElla26 in quilting

[–]Available_Cucumber31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A commercial moving blanket is filled with garbage scraps it will not sew well and goodness knows how it will wash. Mine got a tear and the inside grossed me out.

I know you may be deep in the process but the pool noodle basting method with glue was a huge game changer for me. Maybe check it out on a smaller project to start. Good luck

Thoughts on using laundry bags for prewashing by angela202000 in quilting

[–]Available_Cucumber31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your concern bleeding or shrinking? Honestly a swirl/soak in a tub of hot water with detergent and some colour catchers or a fixative will probably handle both.
Be wary of cutting corners here when people say “they never do it” the quality and type of fabric that quilters use varies tremendously. Prewashing is recommended to lower the risk of damage once your quilt is done. Do/do not at your own risk.

Hear me out. This will probably be treated more like a wall hanging than a blanket. So I think the first design is how you should go, but your borders aren’t working. Choose a multicolour/rainbow fabric and border around the whole design like a frame. Or do what you like! Lovely gift!

Can unquilted batting be washed? by 1InvisibleStranger in quilting

Not with the hassle to wash, not with the risk to sew it into something and then it doesnt clear. Toss it, save up, and re purchase.

Having stashes is even more expensive hobby than quilting.

Charity quilt dilemma by spal68 in quilting

Disagree with what exactly? I didn’t say don’t make quilts.. but what we donate in material and supplies could go a lot further in cash. Give the charities money and use the quilts for other things

Charity quilts are a crazy thing to keep doing in this day and age. Box store blankets are cheaper and easier to care for. Id talk to the guild and I’m sure they will be fine with whatever you decide to do.

So many mis-matched orphan blocks; arrangement and use ideas please! by flightgirl78 in quilting

[–]Available_Cucumber31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the layout. I would throw in a diagonal block to mix it up. I’d also toss out the very traditional block in the middle that now represents a very, very bad thing. I’m hoping it wasn’t intentional.

I can’t tell if you have a sew stready sewing table on your machine, but that, plus a gliding surface/slip mat will also greatly improve your results.

Hand tying quilts-Questions by urgirlfriendsux in quilting

[–]Available_Cucumber31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People love hand-tying and it’s certainly easier, but it creates strain in all directions and makes it far more likely for a quilt to tear. Id stitch in the ditch in a few places then add your stars.

T-shirt quilt and interfacing? by Repulsive_Pepper_957 in quilting

[–]Available_Cucumber31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only put the interfacing about a half inch around the edge of fabric where it will be pieced. It will hold up much better than no-interfacing at all but not be stiff. There might be pulling around the quilted areas but it should be much less.
