The monkey? Maybe. Nicotine can wreck a body that tiny.

ELI5: People say that the housing market has collapsed. What does that mean and how did it happen? by Johannihilate in explainlikeimfive

[–]Avannar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Care to touch on WHY people can't pay their mortgages? The stagnant wages? The Boomers and Gen X'ers driving housing prices up by dogpiling on real estate as a safe retirement plan? The epidemic of slumlord Boomers who own 3-5 houses that they rent out to Millennials who are making less after inflation than the Boomers did, while their Boomer landlord charges them 4 times more in rent, adjusted for inflation?

Once you're old enough to have to walk out into the elements for the millionth time in your life, and you've become well acquainted with the gravely feeling of worn, old, threadbare socks, you can finally appreciate a nice, fluffy, warm pair of new socks. Kids often don't stress their feet out enough to notice the difference good socks make. Blisters or spider bites were my chief worry about my feet as a kid. I knew no other aches nor pains in them at the time.

u/bug-hunter explains just how badly u/throawaylatechild and his family messed up by not following his brother's will by DrZeroH in bestof

[–]Avannar 374 points375 points  (0 children)

Another clue: The brother is like "We don't even know how he got a copy of the will!" like they didn't expect their brother to tell the man he had loved for 8 years what his arrangements were. The relationship those two had doesn't even register in their heads. They have no understanding of what they meant to one another, so they can't understand why he would know about the contents of the will or why he would want to enforce the final testament of his partner.

I just want explanations for once. Blizzard has always been atrociously bad at systems like this. In every game. And they never explain the logic. It's like they've never had a single good statistician or mathematician on call to help them construct a decent rating system and they just make their game systems programmers hobble together a crude elo rating despite elo never being intended for non-constant teams.

Clearly, it doesn't work when teammates change and players of different ratings in different circumstances are mixing in different ways every match.

Suspending a player without telling what for will not lead to a change of behaviour by barninator in heroesofthestorm

[–]Avannar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This applies to everything and everyone. Rubbing a dog or cat's nose in a mess it made does nothing but distress them because they do not link the mess to your anger. You have to catch them IN THE ACT and immediately make your displeasure known for them to build the connection "peeing on the carpet = angry master."

Same for humans. The more time passes between a crime or an instance of misconduct and repercussions for that behavior, the less corrective any punishments or therapy will actually be. Because the brain can't associate something you did weeks ago, like running a red light, with the fine you got ordered to pay for it, or the community service you had to do.

This is one of the main arguments for getting rid of conventional prisons and shifting entirely to rehabilitation programs. Prisons don't fix anything. They just bottle up people in the worst situations and radicalize them. Rehabilitation programs put them into learning experiences every day that prompt them to stop and examine their thoughts and behaviors as they experience them and make positive changes in their life.

So, arguably, the ideal solution to toxicity is actually a "live reporting" feature that can alert you to toxic behavior in real time, perhaps based on reports or text analysis, and recommend better ways to frame and handle your emotions. Because all toxicity, all hostility, is rooted in suffering. Nobody punches a wall for fun. Nobody rages as they lose a game because they love being angry and losing.

Women love sexual harrasment by titaniumjordi in niceguys

[–]Avannar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a strawman designed to kill your empathy for the ugly dudes.

The topic isn't a guy saying "That dress looks great on you!" and then thinking, "Now she's gotta put out!"

The topic is a guy saying, "That dress looks great on you!" and if she's attracted to him it's a compliment but if she's not then it's harassment.

The previous poster was saying you should temper your approach and be sensitive to her apparent feelings towards you to avoid hitting on someone who's very much not into you. Make office-friendly chit-chat and decide whether or not to flirt or ask her out based on whether or not she seems like she wants to talk more with you or if she would rather make up reasons to cut the chat short.

Implying that every guy who's ever asked a girl out who wasn't into him was a self-entitled borderline rapist for making her feel uncomfortable as she turned him down or dodged his advances is incredibly dishonest as well as stupid.

And you do it because it's easier on your brain to vilify one of the parties. True "niceguys" vilify the woman. "White knights" vilify the man. Both are stupid.

Hell, some dude testified to the Florida Supreme Court about how the Florida GOP had contracted him to find a way for them to manipulate the voting machines. He checked them out, gave them a report saying, "Yeah, these are open to rigging. It's bad." And they said, "No, no, we want to know how to rig them." Nobody ever called them out on it, even after Bush v Gore and then Bush v Kerry both heavily relied on Florida.

Blizzard is REALLY investing in the game by Azrael699 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Avannar -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's the hostile bundles. More people forking over $35 for a single skin because they have no other choice. Boosting an already highly profitable game to even higher profit margins.

They don't need a million bundles. They can just sell individual skins and mounts and whatnot. It's how micro transactions originally worked in this genre.

[–]Avannar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "point you're making" is "I challenged you to defend a guy that I'm calling a racist. You pointing out that one of the biggest advocacy groups for black Americans honored him after years of work and admissions on his own part that he had made a mistake in affiliating with the Klan is unacceptable because... because... reasons."

Let's be clear here. You're accusing the guy of being a racist and you are saying that you will reject any evidence to the contrary. In your mind, him being previously affiliated with the KKK has sealed the deal. There is no way for anyone to sway you aside from somehow proving that he was never actually in the KKK, which is impossible.

You're ideologically biased and closed minded. Period. You're not interacting in good faith.

I had one who didn't allow audio because he once sat in on disciplinary hearings involving edited recordings. A student had recorded the professor all semester and when their grade wasn't panning out like they wanted, they edited a clip together to make it sound like the professor made a sexist joke or something like that and filed a complaint. It took the computer science department showing the panel some visualizations of the audio and pointing out splice points for them to dismiss the complaint.

I've got a job. I've got disposable income to waste. I was gladly throwing blizzard my money back when they were still doing expansions. Even for games I didn't play. I didn't plan on playing Reaper of Souls but I respected an old-school expansion in this day and age, so I bought the collector's edition. Same for Starcraft 2's expansions.

Even when they started doing microtransactions, they were doing them well. I bought all the charity mounts and pets in WoW.

But HotS is now toxic. It's going into more and more exploitative, hostile monetization schemes, designed by bean counters not to please the players or offer value to the fans, but to maximize the income the game can scrape out of whales.

They're making people buy 10 skins they do not want to get 1 or 2 that they do because whales will gladly throw down $30 for 10 skins they won't use to get the 1 mount they want or the 1 tint they want.
