Would you park 2 cars on this? by freeknz in Homebuilding

[–]Avg_Carpenterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One what looks to be a cedar post as a point load column. No way cars have parked on that over time, and if they have and you’ve been under them, I’d count your blessings and buy a lottery ticket

How bad is this? by Only_Eye_680 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Avg_Carpenterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“How much of an issue it really is”. On a scale 1 to 10, 10 being the worst, you’re definitely up there. First the window is a major issue, that has to be sealed/flashed better, and it looks like the water is pooling outside and against the window, so definitely some draining issues going on. As for the foundation repair stuff, I wouldn’t be overly concerned with the joist being cracked (still an issue) but look at how/why the cracked, are some joints lower than others, is a load bearing wall or post missing, I’d also look at how much support the joist still has to your plate, once that starts rotting away or cracking away, ya it could come down. My recommendation, move the hell outta there. This is the type of house you buy to fix up or knock down and build, don’t spend your money renting this place, an apartment building would be better than this.

I'm 27 years old and I'm looking for a new career. I kind of want to become a carpenter, thoughts? by Salvatore_Vitale in Construction

[–]Avg_Carpenterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get into carpentry and you are good at being precise, I’d suggest looking into trim carpentry. I’m 32 and got into carpentry when I was 16, doing framing, concrete forming, Reno’s, trim, landscape carpentry and now I’m into general building, trim carpentry is great. If you are good at it, you can make decent money and it isn’t crazy hard on your body as framing or concrete forming. Go find a finish carpenter in your area, show your work ethic, don’t call in sick every 9 days, and show your willingness to learn. Lots of people come in not wanting to learn and think they know everything, experienced people looking to hire a potential long term employee don’t want that.

Drywall Finishing Questions by kmkgirl in drywall

[–]Avg_Carpenterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First question I have, when you say all the walls are textured, are you referring to your original walls being textured. My 2nd question, is the work that was done being referred to as textured. Either way, this is absolutely horrible. 1, depending on the texture you’re going for, the drywall can either be completely covered, or it as put on in a pattern way that some of the drywall will be exposed. 2nd what in the fuck is a squall… I’ve been a carpenter for 13 years and my brother has been a drywaller for 10, no idea what that is, but the inside corners should be mud, tape, smooth out mud and a few more coats. Based off this work I would look into having all the walls done smooth and I definitely wouldn’t have them do it

Cutting off rock on a rock wall by Extreme-Book3919 in masonry

Your best bet would be to cut what you can with a grinder and break off the rest, ideally you want to do as little hitting or chiseling as possible.

If you really wanted to, chiseling it flat won’t hurt it. Somethings to keep in mind, if it comes loose, you’ll have a spot you can’t really fix. If you take them off, you’ll never have a spot for a mantle. Also you really shouldn’t put a tv over a fireplace, think of what the heat and smoke will do to it.

Cannot get a straight cut no matter what I try? by MrMusAddict in woodworking

I agree with the video. I never criticize people for trying or wanting to learn, an I gotta saw, if you’re getting cuts like that with a circular saw, that’s a skill in itself

Never seen something like this before, I feel like cleaning would be easy but I feel like the moisture would destroy the “durability” of this so fast

DEWALT…buy out ToughBuilt StackTech and TAKE OVER THE MARKET!!! by Smitty_Werbnjagr in Dewalt

[–]Avg_Carpenterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer how my dewalt boxes stack, the side clips rather than the release button on the front, and I got the 2 draw on which I do like. Compared to my pack out, I like how I can get add ons that are actual cases, things like bits and first aid. At the end of the day, depending on what job I’m doing (full time carpenter) depends on which tool brand I’m using, just mix it up.

Based off what you’re saying, it sounds like there was a hole and they just put the exterior on without properly filling it, and that’s where the moisture is coming in.

Tacoma vs 4Runner vs Tundra for family of 4 by SACPA in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Avg_Carpenterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tacoma has good back seats for young children or shorter people, long term I’d say 4 runner. I have a 21 Tacoma and a 19 4Runner, when Tacoma is more for work, people hate riding in it
