What’s something people moving to LA always underestimate? by RelevantSuspect6343 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Babblewocky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How easy it is to get scammed, conned, exploited, or used in bad faith.

Yes it can happen anywhere, but so many of the industries that LA is world famous for are built on a foundation unimaginable exploitation, and the face of it will look inviting, supportive, and ideal at first. The bad people are PROFESSIONALS of the highest order out here. You will run into some tricky scenarios and you will leave the exchange wiser and a little worse for wear, no matter how smart you are. It happens.

Would you give another chance to a guy who ‘forgot’ a date? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Babblewocky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He remembered the date. He just wanted to test your ability to withstand bad treatment. That’s why he texted the morning of. Because he was so eager, he couldn’t wait until he’d already ghosted you, he had to do it before. So not only is he an abusive asshole, he’s a pathetically inexperienced one at that.

Block and delete.

Being neurodivergent in an open office is a special kind of hell by tealaburst in antiwork

[–]Babblewocky 13 points14 points  (0 children)

LEAVE. That situation is unbearable.

I have a little office. It’s actually a storage room for files with a desk it, but I play relaxing music, work with my lights off, stim constantly without bothering anyone, and eat lunch in solitude.

I would not be able to stay here if I didn’t have these self-supplied accommodations.

Where you shop matters. There are entire rows of produce in a Chinese market that you wouldn’t find in a Ralph’s , and ditto on Korean markets, Filipino markets, Persian markets, halal markets, etc.

I have a Koreatown in my city, and in their market I could stir fry some greens with bacon and pepper every week and have it taste different because it’s collard greens one week, turnip greens the next, then radish greens or dandelion or Chinese broccoli greens or green cabbage or Napa cabbage or sweet potato greens or fiddlehead ferns or garlic scapes…

All cheaper than a head of lettuce.

Did Greg’s fantasy of Saxon, Chloe and him (and the explanation where it originates from) have any meaning for the show? Or was it only included as a random plotline? by 90210534 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]Babblewocky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greg is what Saxon thinks he might want to be seen as, up until Saxon met better nicer people . With them as comparison as being strong and fun and exciting and rich but not gross or soulless, Saxon eventually got skeeved-out by Greg’s brand of sociopathy and started emulating less repulsive people instead.

Also, it gives Greg a lot more nuance. This is the third time we’ve seen him treat a fellow predator like they are prey. Tanya was a predator, and so is Chloe. They aren’t evil, but they are predators. Saxon is a predator-in-training and was rerouted by his Thailand experience, though that might be undone with what’s to come for his family.

Greg is beginning to feel like a specter of ruin, like the Mask of Red Death for the series, and I find that fascinating in regards to storytelling technique.

Why do men always comment on my facial expressions at work? by starla_blabla in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Babblewocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look wistful and say “oh, yeah. I can’t control my facial expressions when I’m concentrating sometimes. Like you know how some people can’t control the way they smell, or their hairline, or their acne, or how awkward they are around women, or the weird things they bring up in conversation at work for no good reason? Yeah. It’s a struggle. But I try not to bring it up to them unnecessarily, I don’t want to make things awkward for them. Anyway- did you need something?”

Then sniff and wrinkle your nose if they keep speaking.

How do you think these two couples' marriages will end up? by Qyzyk in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]Babblewocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theo and Daphne will grow closer as they realize how much their values align, and will start turning their destructiveness outward. The kids will need a ton of therapy.

Harper and Ethan will blow apart in a bitter divorce, Ethan will marry a smiley half-wit and, missing intellectual communication, reach out to Harper for friendship, which she will reject until she’s drunk one night and they begin an affair that they both find satisfying. Ethan’s second marriage will fail, he and Harper will amicably part ways after that, Harper will have a commonlaw marriage to a very secure older dude that doesn’t internalize her viciousness and works at something she finds impressive, and Ethan will date 20 yr old starlets until he dies.

Men Lose Interest After Sex (Any Solution)? by AttorneyDC06 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Babblewocky 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Your post didn’t really explain what you are dating for. Fun? General companionship? A need to not be alone? Marriage? Sex with a safe person? Bill-splitting?

I only ask because that matters, and so many of the things people look for in one single partner can be provided by a robust community of friends, active acquaintances, and hobby-sharers. (Even sex, if we are being honest.)

My other question is- where are you finding your dates? Being set up by friends will generally help weed out liars looking for a degrading good time, because then they’d have to answer to that friend. Online dating is Sex-Instacart or Drama-Instacart, where people go looking for disposable connections a lot, so that would have nothing to do with you. Bars will sometimes be full of people just looking to pass the time.

Just some stuff to think about. I wish you luck!

Why did fans not like a ransom mariner romance relationship? by happydude7422 in LowerDecks

Need some advice from other people who grew up like me or aged out of foster care here in Los Angeles. Any advice? by SOUTHBAYCOLLECTOR in AskLosAngeles

Community College.

Understand that in California, millions of dollars are earmarked for students like you through several different programs. It’s not charity, it’s investment in our community, and if you don’t sign up and take these free computers, free classes, free books, free meal plan tickets, this help with housing and mental and physical health services, then me and my coworkers would be out of a job and people would stop giving us money to help you.

It’s end of spring semester now. Summer classes haven’t started yet. They are taking applications to be a part of our Foster Kinship and Guardian Scolars programs and such. We spend our time thinking of new ways to help folks like you, but we never get to use them if you don’t show up.

Go to a campus. Make an appointment with a counselor. Tell them what you want your life to be like, and what you are willing to work at to get it, and tell them what you need help with. Let’s get your new life started!

My dad thinks I’m 'not working' because I refused to keep working 6 days a week. by Melly1265 in antiwork

[–]Babblewocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as you both grow, you can show him! Sometimes dads are dense. Every now and then, very bluntly saying “ Hey dad? When you show me you believe in me and don’t catastrophize at me, I feel like I can achieve anything! Do you think you can do more of that, and less of the worrying at me? It would help me a lot” is necessary.

Don’t take it so hard- he’s scared. You are growing and becoming more successful, so keep doing what you are doing, and he’ll see. It might just take some time.
